Introduction
IIIT is the generic name for several Institutes of Information Technology in India, each a mini university in itself. Many of these institutions have been subsequently renamed to identify their affiliations and goals. The IIITs were conceived to be forerunners in the information technology education sector, at a time when India was going through a phase of unprecedented boom in the software industry (Years 1998 - 2000). The course curriculum at these institutes is at par with similar offerings at the Computer Science departments of Indian Institutes of Technology.

* IIITD&M Kancheepuram is the fully funded Government of India academic, research cum residential Institute.

The Institute offers interdisciplinary academic and research program that integrates engineering design, manufacturing and management with information technology.

IIITD&M, at present, is operating at IIT Madras Campus and will move to its permanent campus which will be created at the Kelambakkam-Vandalur road near Chennai (~ 30 km from Chennai Airport).

Information
The Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad that is also called IIIT Allahabad was established in 1999, as a center of excellence in Information Technology and Computer Science by Government of India. This institution was established in order to churn out enough graduates to meet the demand of software engineers that was increasing rapidly due to IT boom in US and Europe. A year later, in the year 2000, IIIT Allahabad was conferred with the "Deemed University". The Institute thus became empowered to have a perpetual seal and award degrees subsequent to the conduct of its own examinations.

The campus of IIIT Allahabad is situated at Jhalwa in the outskirts of Allahabad. The campus is spread in a sprawling 100 acres land near Dev Ghat. The architecture of this institution is unique in itself. In a serious deviation from the established pattern, the design is contemporary in nature and makes a statement about the similarities between atoms and bits. Instead of the traditional geometric lines, the campus and other buildings have been styled on patterns developed by internationally acclaimed scholar and mathematician, Roger Penrose.

Presently IIIT Allahabad offers in only two subjects Information Technology and Cyber Law. These are offered at both Graduate and Post-Graduate levels both. A new course named Master of Science (MS) in Cyber Law & Information Security has been introduced that is one of its kinds in India.

History
Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT-A) was established in 1999 and is situated at Jhalwa on the outskirts of Allahabad.

This is a Deemed University, promoting education in information technology and related areas. In addition to the BTech program, the institute offers M Tech and doctorate degrees in bioinformatics, wireless communication and intelligent systems.

The Prime Minister of India constituted a National Task Force on IT and Software Development in 1998. The purpose of this committee was to make specific recommendations for the establishment of IT institutions that would produce a skilled IT workforce. The vision was to bring India to the frontier of the field of information technology.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development through its order of 1st July 1998 constituted the Rame Gowda Committee. This expert committee was to submit a project report regarding the feasibility and logistics of setting up a National Institute of Excellence in Information Technology with Allied Sciences. This Institute would carry out pioneering research and development with an emphasis on industry linkages and networking at national and international levels.

This Expert Committee met a number of times and discussed the vision and scope of the institute against the backdrop of technological innovations, particularly in the field of Information Technology. Accordingly, the decision was taken that it was an opportune moment for India to exploit and harness IT at all levels, from grass-root applications to top-notch software development.

The national task force on IT had suggested a wide spectrum of recommendations spanning from wired-village concepts to $50-billion software development programs within 6-8 years. To achieve this target, there was an urgent need for massive manpower generation. Towards this end, the Task Force had called for a number of front-ranking IT centers of excellence, of which the first was to be established in Allahabad.

The Expert Committee then proposed the profile of an institute with all the relevant details with regard to location, funding and governance. It also came up with a budget of Rs. 41.70 crores for the establishment of an institute at Allahabad. It was the hope of the members of the Committee that the setting up of this institute would usher in an era of establishment of such centers across the country. Furthermore, this institute was expected to emerge as a national center of excellence in IT along with like sciences and technologies.

For financial and administrative approval, these recommendations were placed before the Expenditure and Finance Committee at its meeting on the 30th of December, 1999.

IIITA

Campus
The institute is established in a sparkling new campus at Jhalwa, on the outskirts of Allahabad. Some portion of the Nehru Science Center, within the Allahabad University campus, is also on lease.

The Jhalwa campus includes two Computer Centers with six labs each, 16 lecture halls, electronic library, and a residential campus. An open air theater, stadium and various recreational facilities are under development.

The NSC complex includes five laboratories, eight computer laboratories, five lecture halls, a conference room, auditorium, library, cafeteria, office space and other facilities. The total covered area is about 25,000 sq. ft. Besides this, there is an open space of 50,000 sq. ft. that is used for parking, lawns and sporting activities.

The new campus has been developed on 100 acres of land at Devghat, Jhalwa, on the outskirts of Allahabad. The architecture aims to transcend established design conventions and make a statement about the similarities between atoms and bits. Instead of the traditional geometric lines, the campus and other buildings have been styled on patterns developed by internationally acclaimed scholar and mathematician, Roger Penrose.

Penrose Geometry
This grid was chosen because the process of constructing a 'Penrose Universe' has a remarkable congruence with the fundamentals of information theory. The basic units of information are aggregated in simple or complex sequences to provide a variety of 'information structures' that span the entire range of human activity.

Elements of the new campus
Within the Penrose layout for the campus, a central zone has been marked out for the academic core consisting of an administrative building, lecture theater complex, electronic library, computer laboratories and research facilities.

The sun pattern has been chosen for laying out the library and the lecture hall complex. The computer laboratories and the administrative buildings are derived from selected tessellated blocks in the star pattern.

The lecture theater complex has pentagonal lecture halls seating 100 students. Multimedia labs, tutorial rooms, faculty rooms, language labs and meeting rooms are also included. The basement of the building contains the air-conditioning plant and other service machinery.

Also present is an electronic library that provides students with connectivity to the latest technological material through networked workstations. There will be a total of 140 systems distributed over two floors. Reading space will also be provided at convenient locations.

The central portion has computer labs, while the arms of the building house faculty rooms and classrooms. The building has three levels, with an area of approximately 3820 sq.m. The total covered area in the academic campus is approximately 15,600 sqm. Dholpur stone and rough cast plaster are the two main finishes chosen for the building exteriors.

Residential Campus
The residential campus consists of a mens' hostel with capacity for 240 students, womens' hostel for 60 students, 40-room air-conditioned guest house and staff residences for senior professors and other staff. Faculty hostels with two-room and one-room units meant for visiting professors are also be provided.

Sports facilities will be located within the main campus, with a 500-seat sports complex.

This infrastructure is proposed to accommodate the needs of the institute for more than a decade.

Hostels
There are separate hostels for men and women, with single rooms (for the senior most batches) and twin sharing rooms. The spacious accommodations are provided with computers, along with 24-hour backup power supply. The hostel mess caters to the students' meals. Facilities for recreation and sports like cricket, football, badminton and table tennis are available with more on the way.

The freshmen batches are housed in another hostel situated in Naini, which can accommodate over 200 students.

The students have access to a regular bus service from the Jhalwa campus to central Allahabad (the Nehru Science Centre campus). The bus service also covers the Naini and Civil Lines areas.

Directors Message
