NAAC report of St Ann College For WomenSECTION-I : INTRODUCTION
The Congregation of the Sisters of St.Ann, Guntur, established in Hyderabad, which is the capital of the State, a Junior College of St. Anns in 1981. The Degree College came into existence in the year 1983 with two under graduate courses in B.Sc., (BZC) and B.Com. and with 106 students. The College is affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad and is recognized under section 2(f) and 12B in 1987. The College was granted permanent affiliation by the Osmania University within four years of its inception. The Junior College was separated and shifted to its own premises during the year 1991. The Degree College became a P. G. College with the introduction of P.G. courses in the year 1991 - 92. The Government of Andhra Pradesh under the Article 30 of the Constitution has recognized St.Anns College for Women, Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad, as a Minority Institution.
The College is situated in an area of 4 acres and 36 guntas and is located in an urban area. The College offers three programmes at undergraduate level, - B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com and four programmes in Post Graduates - M.Com., M.Sc., MCA & MBA. In all, the College offers 22 U.G. programmes and 5 P.G. programmes. It has 12 departments under Science, 11 departments under Arts and 1 under Commerce. Among these, 5 departments offer P.G. programme. The College was autonomous during the years 1991 - 1996 and same was discontinued thereafter due to administrative reasons. The Principal has, however, informed the Peer Team the desire of the Management to apply for Autonomous Status again.
The College has a Vision, Mission and a Logo. The Vision of the College clearly depicts the goal of the institution to develop women students as empowered citizens of the country through well defined mission statements. The Logo of the College highlights the quotation of Rabindranath Tagore, 'Let all that is dark within me burst into flame and the veil of error be torn away'. The objectives and mission of the College are in accordance with the changing social scenario and the technological revolution.
There are 3337 students studying in the College in U.G. and P.G. programmes. There are 112 teachers of whom 16 have Ph.D. and 15 have M.Phil. 75 non- teaching staff are currently in position, out of whom 59 are technical staff. The unit cost of education for U.G. is Rs. 11,201.00 including salary component and Rs. 5,332/- excluding salary component. For P.G. courses, the unit cost of education for science courses like M.Sc., (Maths) and M.Sc., (Chemistry) is Rs.17,766/- including salary component and Rs. 13,512/- excluding salary component, whereas the same for M.B.A and M.C.A is Rs. 25,135/- including salary component and Rs. 17,563/- excluding salary component. The College follows annual pattern in U.G. and semester pattern in P.G. with non credit system of instruction and examination. The number of working days and teaching days were 231 and 180 respectively for the academic year 2004-05. There are 43,802 books in the library and the College subscribes for 60 journals, of which 12 are international journals, 77 periodicals and 12 dailies. The College has extensive networking with leading industries for campus placements and has established linkages with national and international institutions for collaborative academic programmes.
Volunteering to be assessed and accreditated by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), the College has submitted its Self Study Report in April, 2006 where upon the Council constituted a Peer Team with Prof. V.B. Coutinho, Former Vice-Chancellor, Gulbarga University, Karnataka as Chairman; Dr.N.Sukumaran, Dean (Research), Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Dr.S.Kumuda, Principal, Bharathidasan Government College for Women, (Autonomous) Pondicherry as members. The Peer Team was ably Co-ordinated by Dr. Sujata P. Shanbhag, Assistant Advisor, NAAC, Bangalore.
The team visited the College on 17th, 18th, and 19th August, 2006. The team interacted with the Principal, the management, the members of the faculty, non- teaching staff, representative groups of students, alumni, parents, the university and the state government. The team visited the various infrastructure facilities viz. class rooms, library, laboratories, sports, canteen, health centre, botanical garden, office, seminar hall, NSS room, staff room, ladies waiting room, parking sheds etc. Taking into consideration the seven criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer team makes the following observations:
SECTION - II : CRITERION- WISE ANALYSIS
CRITERION 1 : CURRICULAR ASPECTS
The vision and mission of the College state clearly the goals of the College as promotion of excellence in the sphere of higher education and catering to the aspirations of the less privileged sections of society. Stating the vision and mission of the College in the Self Study Report it has mentioned that the education imparted is expected to equip women to face life upholding the cherished values and help the women to develop a spirit of enquiry and improve the quality of life of people.
Since this is an affiliated College, it follows the syllabi prescribed by the University. The College offers 12 B.Sc., courses, 6 B.A., courses, 4 B.Com courses and 5 P.G. courses viz. M.B.A., M.C.A., M.Com., M.Sc., (Maths) and M.Sc., (Chemistry). The College offers many elective options. In addition to the core curriculum, institutional level certificate and foundation courses are also being offered by the College.
In all, 22 combinations are offered now under Undergraduate programme.

The revision of the syllabus is done as and when the University reviews the syllabus. 17 members of the faculty of the College are the members of various Boards of Studies of Osmania University and play a vital role in framing the syllabi. The College imparts foundation and certificate courses for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, the syllabi of which are designed, reviewed and updated by the faculty once in 3 years in accordance with the changing world in terms of science and technology. Seven staff members are members of Board of Studies in other Autonomous Colleges.
Every department arranges guest lectures regularly. In most of the courses, Computer education is an integrated component. All the departments obtain feedback from academic peers, who visit the College for delivering extension lectures / seminars / workshop / practical examination, through a well designed questionnaire, 'SAFIRe'. The Head of the institution reviews the feedback once in a year and concrete suggestions are put into practice from the succeeding academic year.
The College has networking with the neighbourhood industries and institutions through collaborations, MoUs, linkages for enhancing the quality of education.
CRITERION- 2 : TEACHING - LEARNING AND EVALUATION
Admission of the students to various courses in the College is regulated by procedures, schedules and reservations stipulated by the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Osmania University. As the College is a Catholic Minority Institution, Christian students are given due consideration for admission into various courses. For B.Com (Honors) course, the selection is based on the rank obtained in the common entrance examination conducted by Osmania University and 50% of the marks secured in the qualifying examination. The admission into P.G. courses is carried out as per the AICTE, Osmania University and State Government norms. As the College is the minority institution, the seat allotment for admission to P.G. courses are as follows.
80% through minority candidates as prescribed by the Government.
20% management quota.
After admission, the faculty collects the bio-data of each student and during interactions in the classes, the weaker students are identified and remedial classes are conducted to coach those students to do well in their examinations. With UGCs financial assistance, the College has been organizing remedial programmes for SC/ST students. The bright students are encouraged to undertake in-house projects, dissertation and paper presentation in seminars. They are also encouraged to take part in quiz, debate and elocution competition. Bridge courses are offered to the first year students for a smooth transition from the present state of competence to a higher level of study.
The teaching plan formulated for the academic year is followed by the teachers and the Head of the department monitors the coverage of the syllabus. The Principal holds regular meetings with staff and students to check the progress of teaching. Various methods like seminars, symposium, workshops, field trips are used to enrich teaching. Business games, project reports, industrial tours, case studies that are used for effective learning. Audio visual aids are used to help teaching. The ratio of teaching staff to non- teaching is 4:3 and the ratio teachers to students is 1:30 which is within permissible U.G.C. limits.
Teaching and non - teaching staff are recruited as per the rules prescribed by the Government and adopted by the University. While selecting teaching staff, the applicants are ranked and asked to take a teaching test. The University approves the appointment. Teaching positions are created as per work load in the case of self - finance courses and the management appoint teachers as and when necessary. Self-appraisal of teaching staff is done every year. The students evaluate the teachers on various attributes on a four point grading scale. Suggestions are given to the staff for improvement. Feedback on campus experience is got from the students which helps the management to improve the facilities.
The College has organized 14 seminars / workshops during the year 2002 - 2006. Eleven of the faculty have attended UGC refresher course and six undergone orientation programme, while eighteen of the teaching staff have undergone other training programme. Dr.(Sr.) K. Anthonamma received seven awards, including Best Teacher Award from the Association of Minority Institutions, while six other faculty also received awards. In all, eighty six linkages are developed with national and international agencies for teaching and / or research.
CRITERION 3 : RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION.
One of the avowed objectives of this College is 'to promote excellence in the sphere of higher education'. Out of a total of 112 teachers only 16 are with Ph.D. degree in the College. Fifteen staff members are M.Phil. holders and other eleven are persuing their M.Phil. and 17 for their Ph.D. Some of the teachers are provided with seed money to persue research.
Project work / Dissertation is a part of the course requirement for postgraduate students and this involves original work under the guidance of faculty.
Some of the teachers are involved in active research. A few of the members of staff from the Dept. of Genetics, Nutrition, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Zoology and Political Science Botany operate minor research projects funded by the UGC, World Bank and industries. The faculty have published nine articles in national journals and seven articles have been accepted for publication. Besides, 27 papers are presented in conferences. Two teachers have published 5 books. The Dept. of Genetics has organized two national level seminars availing UGC financial assistance.
There is one NSS unit with 100 volunteers. The unit is under a programme officer. The NSS unit organizes community work, blood donation camps and awareness camps. Apart from NSS unit, the College Management has a registered body namely, SASSS - St.Anns Social Service Society; SAHHARA another unit, which involves the students in programmes like women empowerment, awareness programmes and women and child education has done a commendable job. The College has received UGC assistance to the tune of Rs.1,38,120/- in the 10th plan period for promoting extension activities like nutrition awareness, AIDS awareness, Blood donation camp for Thallasemic children, Mushroom cultivation for Entrepreneurship Development Programme etc.
The Department of Botany has conducted training programme on mushroom cultivation to slum dwellers in the neighboring community. The Department of Zoology has done demonstration on the use of vermi-compost in improving soil fertility and quality of the crop, to the farmers of Upparpally, Abdullapur and Bandlaguda of Rangareddy Dist. The visit of student volunteers to orphanage and old age homes is a regular feature of the College.
The College has a Eco-Club namely, Anne Eco-club with 10 staff and 100 students as members. This club is working under the umbrella of NGC (National Green Crops). The College has one company NCC Army wing with 200 cadets. Six cadets have participated in Youth Exchange programme to Canada, Bangaladesh, UK and Singapore. Every year one or two cadets participate in Tal Sainik Republic Day Parade. One of the students has commanded AP contingent in the Prime Ministers rally and another won the silver medal for medical subjects in the All Tal Sainik Competitions at Delhi.
The College organizes extension programmes in collaboration with various Non - Government and Government organizations.
CRITERION 4: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES.
St. Anns College for Women owns 4 acres and 36 guntas of land in which the St. Anns College & the Junior College for Girls are housed. The College is adequately provided with class rooms, laboratories, staff rooms, office room, drinking water taps, toilets etc. The College has well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Nutrition, Commerce Lab, Language Lab, M.C.A. and M.B.A. Labs.
The library has a stack room, a reference room and a reading room. The library is kept open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on all working days. There are 31,521 books in the U.G. Section, 12281 in the PG section, 48 Indian journals and 12 international journals, 77 magazines and 350 back volumes. Among the total books, 18596 are reference books. Besides, there are INFOTRAC database of 3000 journals and online journals. The library is computerized and connected with UGC - INFONET and INFLIBNET funded journals. Last year 2496 volumes worth Rs.7,20,869/- were added. Some of the departments have departmental libraries for reference and issue. The College has a library advisory / purchase committee.
The College has 301 computers, of which 241 are in laboratories; 20 are in internet centre; 20 are in various departments; 14 are in administrative office and 6 are in the library. The College has a Computer Center which has an access from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on all working days.
All the office procedures are computerized. The infrastructure of the College is used optimally. Various outside agencies use the premises for their courses, conducting examinations etc.
The College has a Volley Ball Court, Basket Ball Court, Hand Ball Court, Tennikoit Court and a Kho - Kho Court and facilities for indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess Boards and Carrom Boards. It also has a 20 station multi gymnasium and a carpeted hall with one tape recorder for Aerobics. Besides, the College has a carpeted Yoga hall, Karate hall and Judo hall. To encourage sports activities, the College provides TA & DA and special diets as incentives to those who participate in University and National level competitions. Fee concessions are also made available for sports students. During the last five years, 30 students participated in regional level; 102 in university level; 30 in state level; 15 in National level and one in International level. The College team won in Soft ball, Hand ball, Basket ball, Kho - Kho and Carrom at the University level and a hat-trick of overall Osmania University Championship Trophy.
The College has an Auditorium with a seating capacity of 1200 to 1300 students and three seminar halls, one of which is equipped with Audiovisual aids such as Over Head Projector, television, video cassette player, LCD, DVD and Audio system. The College also has an air - conditioned conference hall with a seating capacity of 30. The cultural programme put up by the students was in the Auditorium.
St.Anns College has a Canteen with well equipped kitchen. There is a branch of the Corporation Bank functioning in the college for the benefit of students and staff. It also has a stationary shop and PCO. The College has other facilities like Generators, Fire Extinguishers, Renewable Energy Source, Vermicompost pit, Rain Harvest pit etc.
Covered parking sheds are made available at various points in the campus for two wheelers and four wheelers of both staff and students. The College has two well furnished guest rooms for outstation guests and also four workers quarters in the campus. The campus is kept clean and tidy.
CRITERION 5 : STUDENTS SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION.
The dropout rate is between 8.22 and 11.25% in UG and 6.87 and 8.1% in PG courses. Every year about 55% of the students join PG courses after completing their UG programme. The success rate of students for the batch 2003 - 06 is 92% and for the batch 2002 - 05 97% in UG courses. For PG courses, the success rate for the batch 2003 - 05 is 99% and 2004 - 06 97%.
Sixty percent of the students, who have registered with the placement cell are selected for various software companies through campus interview. During the last five years, three students have cleared UGC - CSIR NET examination and four have cleared UGC - SLET examination. Twenty students have passed GATE and two cleared the Indian Civil Service Examination. Seventy five students have cleared GRE and TOEFL and 35 students have passed GMAT examination.
The updated prospectus of the College is published annually. It has information about statement of 'Vision and Mission' of the College, objectives and profiles, details of various courses, infrastructure of the College, details of student services, Student support services, details of results, awards and institutional gold medals and scholarships and admission procedure and rules and regulations of the College.
For the year 2005 - 06 a total 80 students received scholarships under the State and Central Government schemes in SC/ST, OBC etc. categories totally amounting to Rs. 2,54,750/-.
The management of the College provides fee concession of 20 - 50% of the total fees for economically weaker students and 80% fees concession for sports students. For meritorious students 30 - 40% fees concession is given by the management. The College has created a fund for giving financial help to meritorious students. The employment cell offers a wide range of services to all students to assist them in their professional development. The College has a Student Grievance Cell to air the grievances of the students and redressed the same to create a cordial atmosphere in the campus.
CRITERION 6 : ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT
The institutional governance comprises of a Governing body, Board of management, Principal, Deans, Heads of Departments and staff members. A number of committees assist the Principal in the administration of the College. This ensures a sense of participation of the faculty in the running of the College. The Principal goes through the accounts as well as the work done by the non-teaching staff. Periodic meetings are held to check the work efficiency of the teaching staff. The academic calendar is prepared by the University, which is followed by the College. A committee comprising the Deans, Convenors of Examinations and Attendance committees and two staff members under the chairmanship of the Principal strictly monitor the adherence of the calendar by the staff.
The amount spent by the College is Rs. 3,10,37,186/- and the balance is
Rs. 66,25,235/- totaling to Rs. 3,76,62,421/- for the financial year 2005-06.
CRITERION 7 : HEALTHY PRACTICES
Keeping in view the expectations of the stakeholders, the College has made the bridge courses, the remedial courses and the tutorial system concentrate on the progress and performance of students. Teachers performance is evaluated by students, so that they fine tune their functioning to achieve the goal of shaping citizens of the future. Giving computer training as a minimum awareness to all students in the College is a good practice.
The Principal maintains a direct rapport with the students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff. They have easy access to her in case of any need or for finding a solution for any problem. Further, Complaint / Grievance box is kept near the Principals office and the Principal herself checks the complaints.
The administrative department is completely computerized together with examinations and library facility to uphold the transparency in the College. The students are encouraged to make presentation through power point and use LCD for their project work presentation.
Twelve departments have MOUs with industries for project and student training programmes. Every department of the College arranges guest lectures inviting eminent persons from national institutions and universities, to familiarize the students and teachers regarding the latest developments in the concerned subject. The College also conducts many extracurricular activities to help in the over all development of the students.
Many certificate courses on skill development like Embroidery, Oil painting and normal painting, Bakery and Cookery, Interior decoration, Handicrafts etc are offered to enable the students to discover and tap their potential and providing an avenue for self employment.
Some departments have conducted some skill based training programme to teach the people in the neighborhood. For example, the Department of Botany has given training in 'Mushroom Cultivation to housewives and unemployed youths under the slogan 'Earn from Home'.
SECTION - III : OVER ALL ANALYSIS
The goal of St.Anns College for Women has avowedly been to empower the women students so that they could face the world on equal terms along with the rest. To this extent, the college management has provided sufficient class rooms, spacious, and well ventilated laboratories and other requirements like a large auditorium, with the smaller conference halls. They have also provided opportunities for the students to excel in extra curricular activities, in sports and games and in national programmes like NCC and NSS.
When the Peer Team interacted with the students about the overall facilities provided to them and the need for further improvements in the existing set up, they came out with suggestions that there is a very urgent need for starting of a womens hostel as quite a number of students admitted in the college come from North Eastern States and the other parts of the country. In this connection the Peer Team also concludes that not many SC, ST and OBC students from rural areas have been admitted in the college due to lack of hostel facility and also at the meeting of parents and old students there was an unanimous opinion in favour of college starting a womens hostel at the earliest. The Peer Team is in full agreement with these opinions expressed as providing hostel facilities will greatly help the girls from backward and most under privileged to get admission to the college.
The Peer Team also observed the lack of research initiatives in most of the departments. Very few teachers have taken up research projects on subjects they have been teaching and on subjects on which they have done Ph.D. Again few have succeeded in publishing papers in recognized journals. In any post graduate department, which has an effective teaching programme without research and without publications it would hardly gain any recognition from the academic world. If the college really desires to achieve the highest level of academic excellence the teachers must come out with their original contribution and make an everlasting mark in their respective subjects.
The Peer Team appreciates the presence of discipline and a work culture in so far as teaching is concerned as the college has produced nearly cent percent results over the years and has shown outstanding performance in this field.
The students, the parents and the alumni however have felt acutely the absence of a viable transport system in a fast growing city like Hyderabad to bring students to the college campus before 8.30 in the morning. Hence the Peer Team makes this over all observation that the college authorities should approach the state transport authorities to provide sufficient busses to meet this urgent demand.
The Peer Team also feels that the views expressed by the students, alumni and parents for the starting of more specialized courses at UG & PG level like Journalism, Mass Communication, Literature, Applied Mathematics, Fine Arts etc., must be given a serious thought so that the students desiring to continue their higher education could do so without having to knock at the doors elsewhere. With the infrastructure the college has it is felt that it will not be difficult for the management to provide these courses.
The Peer Team witnessed a well planned and thought out cultural programme wherein the students in all colourful attire projected the history of Hyderabad city supported with dance and music. The performance was of a very high standard with light and sound effects. There was a large gathering of parents and alumni who had gathered in the large auditorium. This certainly was a great opportunity to students to give their very best to show their deep commitment and love for the culture and the past glory of our country.
The students hailing from Nagaland and Meghalaya performed the bamboo dance for the benefit of the Peer Team members to a great deal of perfection. This programme was promoted by the Heritage Club. Its a matter of appreciation that this club has encouraged the students coming from all over the country to project their culture through song, music and dance.
SAHHARA meaning St.Anns Helping Hands and Reaching Arms organisation which works with Rotaract and other NGO groups has done a splendid job in promoting the understanding of science by reaching out to the under privileged students in various schools of Hyderabad through the modus operandi of a van equipped with Science models and having equipments for experimentation. Students in groups take the vehicle once or twice in a month to be with the not so fortunate children studying in VIII to X classes so as to bring home to them the wonders of science. These college students reported that, there has been a tremendous impact on the young minds accompanied with joy coming from all those who have participated in these programmes. In addition they have educated people in slum areas on AIDS awareness, health and hygiene.
From the above the Peer Team draws the following conclusions and make appropriate recommendations :
As has already been submitted earlier, the Management of the College may make provision for appropriate hostel facilities for girls coming from other states and abroad for studying in the college. Providing hostel facilities will also help the SC, ST and OBC students to join the college. As it stands the number of such students admitted in this college is quite low.
Ideally, the college now requires a very large library providing facilities at UG and PG level with a sitting accommodation for reading and reference for atleast 200 students at one time. The college authorities may examine this proposal very seriously so that the existing material in the Library in the form of books, journals, CDs etc. can be extensively used.
The college Library is in urgent need of an upto date modern reading/reference room, so that students can sit freely and read without any disturbance. Providing cubicles with focus lamps may be an ideal solution to meet the requirements of research. Further, the internet connectivity to the Library may be considerably increased so that 20 - 30 students/teachers can do their research undisturbed at one time.
Each department requires internet connectivity through existing LAN with a PC so that teachers and students can have access to latest knowledge.
Keeping in view the large number of students who are eager to be conversant with different languages a full fledged well equipped language lab may be created to meet this demand.
The committee notes with appreciation the painstaking efforts of the college to promote sports and games among the students. The sports section headed by the Lady Physical Directress has ten male coaches working around the clock which has resulted in the college students securing all the top prizes in the University and even at State and National levels. The college should further seek the support of Sports Authorities of India to help the students to attain better results at international level.
The Peer Team strongly recommends that the teachers of the college be given all encouragements to do research at doctoral and post doctoral level. Publishing articles in leading journals will bring these teachers and colleges into recognition at different academic levels. To achieve this, senior teachers must be left free to guide younger teachers in research and the work promotion of extra curricular activities may be transferred to younger generation of teachers in the college.
Recognising that the work of educating women is a very challenging task and appreciating the way the college has gone about to achieve commendable results the Peer Team wishes the management, the teaching/non teaching staff and the students much greater success in the years to come.
