Profile of Tamilnadu Dr Ambedkar Law University (TDALU)
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is a law school in Chennai, India. The University offers a variety of specializations, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University was named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a prominent Indian legal specialist of the 20th century. Dr. Surjit Singh Barnala, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, is the Chancellor and Prof. S. Sachidhanandam is the Vice-Chancellor. The institution was established by the 1996 state Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, with the National Law School of India University as its model as the first Indian legal education institution. Apart from the teaching and academic research initiatives, the University has both state-sponsored and private law colleges as affiliates, differing from the other law schools in the country.
The University is unique in terms of the identity given to the undergraduate and postgraduate education. The School of Excellence in Law was established to primarily focus on undergraduate education. At the postgraduate level, the University offers advanced degrees through its Departments of Law. The advanced degree programs offered include Business Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law & Legal Order, and Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Administration. The University has been making progress towards meeting international standards in the academic community, including active collaborative initiatives with leading institutions around the world. The University also conducts examinations in various branches of law, and awards degrees and diplomas recognized by the Government of India and many other countries around the world.
Although applicants from all over the country are encouraged, most students are from Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University aims towards advancement of legal education and promotion of knowledge of law in general. The University will strive to improve the communal harmony and achieve the goal of egalitarian society through legal literacy programmes.
The University was established in1997 with the objective to provide quality legal education in India. It is member of The Association of Indian Universities. It has the power to affiliate colleges and institutions. Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, established in 1997, is a State University located in Chennai. Dr Ambedkar Government Law College in Chennai; Government Law Colleges located at Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli; and Central Law College at Salem are some the affiliated colleges.
It has also established the School of Excellence in Law and its constituent college, namely, the University Law College at Chengalpattu. Seminars and workshops are organized by the university.
University aims at updating all the teaching and training according to the latest methods. It works towards achieving Social progress of the country. The Law University will strive to promote the skills of advocacy among the law students and research scholars so as to serve the society with a sense of responsibility while providing legal services, making legislation and suggesting law reforms. The Law University will organize Moot Court Competition for the students of various Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu; such competition will be conducted at the national level also.
Profile of University
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997. The main objectives behind the establishment of this law university were to impart quality legal education and to promote the knowledge of law among masses. The University is striving towards improving the communal harmony and to achieve the goal of egalitarian society through legal literacy programmes.
The Law University is also promoting the skills of advocacy among the law students and research scholars so as to serve the society with a sense of responsibility while providing legal services, making legislation and suggesting law reforms. The university has few affiliated colleges spread across the state; the colleges are offering degree and diploma programs in Law. The Distance Education Department of the varsity offers courses in Law through distance mode.
Established in the year 1996, Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University was inaugurated by the then President of India Dr KR Narayanan. The University commenced functioning from 3rd October, 1997. It aims to promote acquisition of legal knowledge in a fast developing and changing society and to continually offer opportunities of upgrading knowledge, training and skills in the context of innovation, research and discovery.
Located in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University is one of the esteemed institutions of legal education in this southern metropolitan city. The University has been named after Dr BR Ambedkar, the drafter of Indian Constitution and a prominent legal expert. It was inaugurated by the then President of India K.R. Narayanan on On 20th September 1997. The university was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature.
The Objectives of the University as specified in the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University Act 1996 (No.43 of 1997) are as follows;
* To provide for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge of law and their role in the development of better education;
* To promote legal education and well being of the community generally;
* To develop in the students and research scholar, a sense of responsibility to serve the society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms and the like;
* To organize lectures, seminars, symposia and conferences;
* To promote legal knowledge and to make law as an efficient instrument of social development;
* To provide access to legal education for large segment of the population and in particular to the disadvantage groups such as those living in remote and rural areas;
* To promote acquisition of legal knowledge in a rapidly developing and changing society and to continually offer opportunities of upgrading knowledge, training and skills in the context of innovation, research and discovery in all fields of human endeavors;
* To provide innovative system of University level education, flexible and open, in regard to methods and pace of learning, combination of course, age of entry, conduct of examination and operation of the programmes with view to promote learning and encourage excellence in new fields of legal knowledge;
* To provide education and training in the various fields of law in the State raising their quality and improving their availability to the people;
* To provide suitable pos-graduate courses of study and prompt research in the various fields of law
* To promote national integration and the integrated development of the human personality through its policies and programmes.
The Tamil Nadu Law University provides education in a variety of courses, both at the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels. Besides pursuing strong teaching and academic research initiatives at its campus, the University affiliates state sponsored and private law colleges.
The University has established the School of Excellence in Law primarily to focus on Undergraduate legal education. For ensuring dedicated teaching and research facility at the postgraduate level, the University offers advanced degrees through the postgraduate departments of Law.
It offers advanced degree programs including Business Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law & Legal Order, Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Administration. It also offers part-time research programme for the faculty members working in the affiliated law colleges, enabling them to get PhD degree in law. The university has established student - industry interface Centre (SIIC) that helps for opening more avenues in the legal sphere for the pass-outs.
Tamil Nadu Law University has developed active collaborations with leading institutions around the world. This enables it to conduct examination in various branches of Law, and award degrees and diplomas recognized by the Government of India, and many other countries around the world.
The university library has a vast collection of books in various sub-disciplines of Law as well as national and international journals. Apart from this, it also houses a number of books on various subjects like information Technology, English, Political Science, Sociology, History, Biographies.
The library also provides internet and photocopy facilities to the students. Publication department of the University publishes quarterly News Letters, Law Journals and Law Books in Tamil. Scholarships are also awarded to meritorious and needy students on the basis of performance of the students in the qualifying examination.
School of Excellence offer BA BL(Hons), 3 Yr BL, 5 Yr BL, ML, PGD in Insurance Law by Distance education,By evenin session PGDBL, PGDIT, PGDIPL, PGDEL. Admission to the first year of the 5 year BA BL (Hons) course is based on an entrance test. Students who have passed their 10+2 examination or its equivalent with no less than 60% are eligible for admission. The test is of 2 hours duration carrying 100 marks and consist of objective type questions 80 marks and essay writing 20 marks. One fourth mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Total no. of available seats is 44 which includes 4 seats in NRI Quota. The age limit for admission is 20 years for general and 22 years for SC/ST category.
Each academic year is divided into 2 semesters of 90 working days. In total there are 10 semesters. Seminars, Symposiums and Workshops are part of the curricula. The chosen topics will help in developing the lawyering skills of the students and inculcate a spirit of research in the study of law. Assignments have to be regularly submitted by the students for which marks will be awarded. Exposure to court room practice is possible by participation in Moot Courts organised by the University. 80% attendance in each semester is necessary to take the exam.
Library - an excellent collection of law books and more than 24 international and national journals and magazines. The library has a collection of CD-ROMS and an Audio-visual section with educational video cassettes, which the students can access. Computer training is part of co-curricular activities. To obtain information on various subject, collect material and update their knowledge students are trained to use the internet.
IT Infrastructure - Computer lab with internet access for the students to browse legal database like Manupatra.com,SCConline.com etc.

V Vijayakumar new VC of UniversityNew Vice-Chancellor for Dr. Ambedkar Law University
CHENNAI: V Vijayakumar, professor of law, UNHCR Chair on Refugee Law at the Bangalore's prestigious National Law School of India University was on Wednesday appointed vice-chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University for a period of three years. He will succeed professor S Sachidhanandam, whose tenure has ended.
His posting was cleared by the Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Surjit Singh Barnala on Thursday.
Prof. Vijayakumar will serve as vice-chancellor for a period of three years from the date of his joining office.
Vijayakumar, who will assume office on Thursday, has rich experience in academic and administrative assignments at well known academic institutions in Chennai and Bangalore.
A native of Cuddalore district in north Tamil Nadu, he had his early education at a free school in Chennai. Later he pursued BA, MA and MPhil in Political science from the University of Madras.
Subsequently, he had pursued a ML degree and PhD in International Law and Constitutional Law from the University of Madras. He had served as an assistant professor of law at the well known Presidency College in Chennai in the eighties before joining as a faculty at the renowned NLSIU.
Vijayakumar, who has also served a registrar of the NLSIU, has been a visiting scholar in several foreign educational institutions and had published over 30 articles in law journals of national and international repute. His areas of specialisation include constitutional law, administrative law, human rights law, law of elections, refugee and humanitarian law.
