NAAC report of Sri Sarada Niketan College For WomenSection 1: Preamble
Sri Sarada Niketan College of Science for Women, Karur is a self-financing college affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. This college was established in 1987 and got UGC recognition under sections 2(f) and 12B in July 1995. The college is located in a rural area called Saradapuri which is away from Karur. The main purpose of establishing this college was to provide higher education facilities to women of this region, which was not available till then. This being the only womens institution in this region the founders thought of offering mostly job-oriented courses.
Sri Ramakrishna Ashram, who is also managing the college, established this institution. In keeping with the general philosophy of Ramakrishna organization, there is a lot of emphasis laid on spiritualism and spiritual training to the staff and students. Thus the daily schedule of the college starts with a mass prayer in the morning where the entire faculty and the students participate. The college functions mainly with three objectives in view.
To promote the cause of women education specially in Higher education.
To provide Job oriented courses to rural women.
To impart value education.
The college is located in the campus of the Ramakrishna Ashram with 273 acres of land. This campus of the college has 4 blocks. There is a Hostel attached with 30 rooms to cater to 351 students. Besides, there are staff quarters for some teaching and a few non-teaching staff. The greenary on this campus provides the right kind of ambience for pursuing academic activities. The campus is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, thus enables a quite life.
The institution offers multiple courses both in U.G and P.G as well as certain limited number of Diploma and certificate courses. There are 12 departments, eight departments in Science, one dept of Commerce, two departments of Arts and one supporting department of physical education. There are 61 faculty members including the principal, out of whom 2 are Ph.D degree holders, 32 M.Phils and 27 P.G. Degree holders. The supporting staff are 36 in number out of whom 27 are administrative and nine are technical staff.
As far as student enrollment is concerned, 701 are undergraduate students, 136 are postgraduate students and 9 Postgraduate Diploma students. As an affiliated college of the Bharathidasan University, the college is constrained to simply follow the academic programmes as prescribed by the University in all respects. It is note worthy that the results of the college are 89% pass in Undergraduate courses with 64% obtaining I class and 3 students getting university ranks. The college offers 11 undergraduate programmes, 4 Postgraduate programmes, 2 certificate programmes, 2 Diploma programmes and 2 P.G Diploma Programmes.
The student drop out rate is 5%. There are a few extension activities taken up by the college as a compulsory part of student development, like N.S.S, Campus Diversity Intiative which is sponsored by the Ford foundation in which this college is a partner along with other colleges in the region,and PMR. Under NSS a variety of rural services are taken up and every student is expected to participate in one or the other of these activities for atleast two years.
The college has certain student support services like a health center with a full time nurse, a canteen, a store. An Auditorium serves as a prayer hall as well as a cultural programme center. Transport facility is arranged for day-scholars and boarders are provided emergency transport facility, should the need arise. The peer team has spent nearly three days interacting and visiting all the departments, hostels, college offices, the support services provided, had detailed interaction with support staff, parents, aluminae as well as students. The team interacted with the principal as well as the management viz the swamijis at the helm of affairs in the Ashram as well as the college.
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
Range of programme options available to the students is limited to a few science, arts, commerce and business administration courses in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate sections. Under Graduate Courses: B.Sc in Chemistry, Computer Science, Home Science, Mathematics, Microbiology and Physics; BCA; BBA; B.Com; B.A in Tamil. Post Graduate Courses: MCA; M.Sc in Microbiology; M.Com. PG Diploma Courses such as PG Diploma in Textile Processing, PGDCA and Certificate Courses such as Pre-primary Teacher Training, Functional English are offered as enrichment courses. The Diploma and Certificate courses are job oriented. The Diploma and Certificate courses other than Diplomas in Web Development and Computer Awareness are not currently offered to the students on account of lack of enrollments. College mission and goals other than the general transmission and generation of knowledge include providing educational opportunities to women students in and around Karur Town. The programmes offered are compatible with the mission and goals of the college to an extent.
The College is an affiliated one. Therefore, all the academic programmes are guided by the University in terms of the syllabi, examinations and evaluation. College does not have any autonomy to modify or restructure the course contents. The College has Science, Arts and Commerce Faculties. It is significant to note that college has made efforts to introduce some job-oriented courses such as Microbiology, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Industrial Electronics and Business Administration. If there are some courses on entrepreneurship management included in the curricular options, a graduate will be in a better position to generate employment for herself and others.
At present the college does not have any mechanism to obtain feed back from academic peers, students and employers on the curriculum followed by the college. There is an urgent need to evolve a mechanism to formulate innovative programmes and modify existing programmes to suit the socio-economic environment of the region. The industry-institutional interaction may be explored to improve the quality of the academic programmes. As a womens college, there is a need to initiate a Centre for Womens Studies, which will enhance the scope for introducing more innovative and relevant courses in the curriculum.
Recognized research guides for initiating and sustaining research programmes are not available in the college. The college is mainly a teaching college with no research activity. Masters courses in Commerce, Information Technology, Computer Applications and Microbiology are offered. Some of these are professional courses that need to be strengthened by involving practicing professionals to interact with the students on a regular basis.
Criterion II: Teaching-learning and Evaluation
Teaching, Learning and Evaluation constitute the crux of the quality of educational services. In an effective system of education, appropriate inputs need to be given to get the desirable output. To do this the institution needs to be in a position to judge the students knowledge and offer the remedial courses to get them prepared for that course. It is desirable, therefore, to identify weaker students right at the beginning of the academic session, immediately after the admission to the first year, and offer remedial courses. The college conducts tests at the beginning of the academic year to identify weaker students and such students are given remedial attention on a daily basis.
The teaching process adopted by few teachers is very conventional lecturing method. While a very few teachers have attempted innovative methods of teaching, many need to switch over to a more efficient methodology of teaching. The college should make available latest educational technology and encourage the staff and students to use such aids more frequently.
The College has a variety of co-curricular activities. Students take part in cultural activities. College encourages sports activities of the students. Some of the students of the college, in the past, were members of the university teams.
The examination is conducted by the University at the end of the semester. Periodic tests are conducted by the teachers during each semester. There is no internal assessment in the undergraduate courses. However, the college should encourage teachers to adopt a creative and innovative evaluation process to identify the extent of knowledge absorption by the students.
Teacher recruitment is done according to the rules and procedures laid down by the government. The selection of teachers is done through written tests, demonstration lectures in a classroom followed by an interview. Many fresh postgraduates are recruited to teach the undergraduate and some times even the post graduate courses. Most of the teachers are underqualifed; and many others lack professional expertise. The process of appointing teachers will have to be reviewed and more rigorous procedure should be adopted. Faculty participation in faculty development programmes is very limited and therefore the college should initiate and sustain continuous efforts in faculty development programmes by arranging short term programmes in different departments by inviting experts and guest faculty from national level teaching and research institutes. Faculty should be encouraged and also be given financial support to attend Faculty development programmes outside the college.
Evaluation of teachers is an area which needs very urgent attention. The evaluation of teachers by the students may be formally initiated at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is also highly essential to monitor the teaching practices by a well-designed procedure and reward good and innovative teachers. There are a few teachers with good academic output in some departments, but this number should increase.
College does not have any national or international level linkages and tie-ups for research or teaching. There is an urgent need for the college to look up for such linkages for its own development.
Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension
Sri Sarada Niketan College has very few teachers involved in active research. Since the college is yet to develop its postgraduate departments fully, the research output and the research culture is not present. None of the Postgraduate Departments have any research projects on hand. They have not applied for any kind of grants from UGC for research projects. The college should pay an immediate attention to this aspect. The research culture within the college is conspicuous by its absence. Only 3 out of 61 have registered for Ph.D programmes.
Faculty, currently, are not doing any individual or institutional consultancy work although there is a lot of scope for the staff of Computer Science, Microbiology and Business Administration departments to take up consultancy work. Industry-institutional interface will promote research and consultancy operations.
It is encouraging to note that the college has undertaken a number of extension activities like NSS and Campus Diversity Initiative programmes to promote community services. Faculty and students have participated in outreach programmes. Various extension activities of the college are Community Development, Health and Hygiene Awareness, Adult Education and Literacy, Social work, Medical camp, Blood donation camp, Environment awareness. Students are encouraged to participate at least in one of the extension activities provided and certificates are issued to them. An entrepreneurial cell attached to commerce department is functioning in the college.
The College should organize more outreach programmes in the areas of adult education, eradication of child labour and public health in surrounding villages. Self-employment opportunities and entrepreneurship development among rural women is one area where the college could focus on.
Criterion IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The College is located in campus of 273 acres owned by the Ashram Trust. The existing building includes College buildings. Staff quarters, Hostel buldings, Prayer Hall and Farm house. Two buildings are under construction. The infrastructure is maintained by the funds raised by the Ashram trust. Maintenance of the campus is carried out by a team of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons and unskilled labourers Ornamental and flowering plants, Kitchen garden and Orchard add to the beauty of the campus College should plan for optimal use of infrastructure. The College has undertaken computerization of the Library. Number of working days of Library should synchronize with working days of the college. The college should consider to create a central computer facility, giving access to everyone.
College provides primary health service to the students. One nurse is permanently available in the college campus. Sick room is provided with six beds. In case of any emergency, students are taken to hospital in Karur town in the vehicles of the Ashram trust.
The management has provided limited transport facilities for day scholars to come from and to Karur town.
College has sports facilities. Limited incentives are given to outstanding sports persons by the management.
Hostel housing 351 students in 30 room with a mess facility caters to the needs of residential students. 12 UG students are accommodated in a single room. The college should review accommodation facilities and reduce the number of UG students per room and also provide independent cot, chair and writing table to each student.
The various departments should develop learning resources to facilitate learning. The College should acquire adequate number of teaching aids such as OHPs, LCD Projector, Audio-video cassettes, charts, models etc.
There is a central Library functioning in the college on all working days. The Library has book bank facility and a computer. Ratio of students to books is 1:10. The college should consider to enrich the Library stacking by addition of text and reference books. The college campus is situated in a natural pollution free area. Campus has ample water supply. The college has a Prayer Hall-cum-auditorium which can accommodate 1000 students. Spacious playground is anothere feature of the college. A small animal house, generator room and dairy farm are the other facilities in the college campus.
A huge manimandapam containing a Statue of Swami Vivekananda and a Meditation hall are at the entrance of the college campus. An essence of spirituality prevails in the college campus.
Laboratories in Science departments are available. Microbiology laboratory is well equipped with modern instruments. The other departments urgently need to follow the model of the microbiology laboratory. Computer Laboratory has 100 terminals. The computer facilities are presently used only by the students of Computer Science, MCA, BCA and M.Sc (IT). Other departments do not have any computer facilities for use by the faculty and students.
Criterion V: Student Support and Progression
The total strength of students for undergraduate courses is 701, and 136 for P.G.Courses. Around 95% of the students appear for qualifying examinations after completion of the course of study. The examination results are encouraging. On an average 80% of the students appearing for examinations successfully complete their studies. Progression from UG to PG is around 60%. Since 1998 the student strength has been droping rapidly on account of declining fresh student enrollment.
Every year the college procures some of the ranks in the University examinations. However, the college needs to pay attention to the declining number of ranks in the last 3 years..
The college publishes a prospectus every year. The prospectus gives list of UG., PG Courses, PG Diploma Courses and Certificate Courses. Brief information about various departments, courses and eligibility is given in the prospectus. A general store is housed in the college campus to cater to the needs of the students.
Married candidates are not admitted for any course. This matter requires a review and management should do away with such discrimination.
Moral instruction is imparted at the time of daily morning prayer, which helps in the personality development of the students.
UGC has identified the college for COHSSIP and COSSIP and sanctioned Rs.1 and 3 lacs respectively. The COSSIP grants can be utilized for the development of young scientists.
The College is providing career guidance to the needy students. However, the college must immediately work towards setting up an independent Placement cell. Also department-wise Counselling is given to the students. However, it is suggested that the services of the a Professional Counsellor may be obtained for the benefit of the students.
College has an Alumnae Association. But the association is not very active. The alumnae includes school and college teachers, Chartered Accountants, Bank and Govt. officers and software professionals. Some have established small businesses like Beauty Parlours, Computer centers, and Bakery etc. The alumnae have a very important role to play in the growth of the college. Therefore, the alumnae association should meet more regularly and take a proactive role.
Different clubs and other activities are organised under the supervision of the teachers. Prominent are Nature club, Debate club, Magazine, Cultural programmes, Bhajan, Light music and Quiz club.
Criterion VI: Organization and Management
The college at Karur was established by Shri Ramakrishna Ashram with the objective of providing higher education, with a utility based curriculum, to the women in 1987. The college is self-financing institute, committed to make this institute a lighthouse, sending beams of light to guide women properly. College attempts to imbibe the values preached by the holy trinity of Sri.Ramkrishna Parmanhansa, Sri.Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekanand in young womens mind and create an awareness and concern for the society. The management is well entrenched in the field of education with spiritual bent of mind. The college needs to develop an efficient co-ordinating and monitoring mechanism in the form of various committees. The committees should be assigned with the work of planning, guiding and supervising different academic programmes, and functioning in each department of the college.
The college generates its own funds. Management also meets all emergency needs. Yet a line of demarcation between the financial affairs of the Ashram and those of the college has to be drawn so that resource mobilization becomes easier for the college. Further, college will be able to utilize its own resources for the academic growth and development. It is suggested that the management should consider a review of the organisation and management of the college so as to make it more relevant and meet the aspirations of stakeholders, parents and the society. The college should undertake training programme for non-teaching staff and adopt new managerial skills. The college needs to adopt a system of budgeting and internal auditing. There is a need to develop effective mechanism for resource mobilization and utilization so that budget deficits are met.
College has few staff welfare activities such as interest free loans and Festival advances. College can try for Group Insurance Schemes.
Rent free quarters are provided to some teachers, non-teaching staff and artisans residing in the campus. Free mess to a few non-teaching staff and artisans and mess with subsidy to teachers is provided. The burden of subsidised or free meals should not be passed on to the students. College has yet to develop quality consciousness.
It is necessary to review organisation structure and prescribe specific functions to strengthen the managerial processes. Faculty enrichment programmes need to be arranged so as to provide exposure to new managerial skills, computer awareness and quality management. Regular budget provisions have to be made to every department and need based purchases are carried out independently by the purchase committee only.
Criterion VII: Healthy Practices
The courses are offered under semester pattern, which is an accepted healthy practice. However not all courses have the component of internal assessment where in the teacher concerned evaluates the students independently.
The college has a strong dose of value education to strengthen the moral and ethical fibre of the students. This exposure also automatically influences the teacher in the daily collective prayer session as well as lectures by various monks and other spiritual leaders.
This is a self-financing institution in as much as it is also a self reliant college without dependency on State Government. However it is attracting funds from UGC under various provision of UGC Act however limited it is.
Remedial coaching/teaching is being practiced for the benefit of weak students.
Students are kept regular in their study habits through regular monthly and other periodical academic exercises in the class.
Career guidance and counselling also are being attempted which could be streamlined to give benefit to the target group.
Teachers are young and enthusiastic. This can be an advantage to the institution provided they are encourged to acquire research qualifications, write research papers and have them published in standard journals, become members of professional bodies and attend and contribute papers in seminars, conferences and interact with experienced seniors in their respective disciplines.
In order to motivate them towards quality improvement they need to be retained in the college by paying them attractive salariers. Once they are into research, quality of teaching also improves which is very much needed.
Section 3: Overall analysis
The college was started with very laudable objectives of providing higher Education facility to rural women of this area, to impart value based education and impart skills to women by offering job oriented courses, so that economic empowerment is the ultimate outcome of womens education. While the college has turned out graduates with various skills, there is no documented evidence as to how did these graduates get benefited by acquiring these degrees. There are no two opinions that value and spiritualism have a pivotal role to play in ones life. The fact remains to be remembered that the young women of today are the change agents of their generations to bring about social transformation and establish a rational society with scientific temper. While spiritual training, which is the core principle of education in this college, enables the strengthening of moral value, â€˜life trainingâ€™ is equally important. Awareness of various laws relating to women which would empower them in general in all respects is to be imparted by establishing a women studies cell. This college is working towards Autonomy. The staff need to be oriented in matters like planning for their departments and making decisions. In other words, staff needs to develop self reliance and not look to Trustees for all their needs. They need to be encouraged to prepare the budgets of their respective departments and be involved in all the processes that go into managing a college and be familiar with the resources of their college. They can also look to the respected elders for guidance and blessings.
One very disappointing practice in this college that needs to be corrected immediately and that is the rule of not admitting married women in any course should be dispensed with; for it is not only an anti women empowerment provision, but also unconstitutional. Needless to say that the education is a fundamental right and all citizen are entitled . Marriage and motherhood should not be obstacles to womans higher education. In addition, at all places, where women are either studying or working, a child care center also needs to be established. This college can very easily arrange for this facility. The college is established primarily and essentially as an educational institution to impart good education and diverse employable skills and therefore a proper balance has to be struck between education and spiritual exposure.
Entrepreunership Development programme can be introduced so that the students are able to establish themselves as independent business women in this textile industry belt.
Every faculty member may participate in research and attract funds for project works for academic excellence. Educational Technology may necessarily be encouraged in all the departments.
Student services activities may be initiated by establishing a competitive examination coaching center and by providing all study material.
Library can be strengthened both technologically as well as by increasing the library budget many folds. Books need to be issued to undergraduate students also. College with 5 postgraduate departments has to make investments in procurring research journals and reference books.
Hostel has a lot of scope for improvement so that the place could be a real home away from home. Certain number of students can be under the care of a teacher so that they can feel comforted and feel free to interact on varieties of teenage emotional problems. Services of a professional counsellor will be highly useful.
Faculty improvement programmes need to be taken up on a war footing. Computer literacy programmes need to be made a necessary component of the
employee training both in the office as well as departments.
The peer team has spent a lot of memorable time in this college, interacting with staff and students .We would like to highlight the following
Medical, Sports, Hostel facilities, food served in the mess need critical scrutiny by a regular peer.
The College needs to ensure static of faculty. The mobility rate of faculty is much higher. This has already incurred serious academic disruptions. Better perquisites will attract and help in minimizing the mobility and develop academic satisfaction.
The functioning of the trust and the college are over lapping. A clear line of demarcation of the functioning of the trust and the college needs to be drawn so that the college will be able to march ahead and achieve the noble objectives of higher education in general and the missions thrust in particular.
Non- Computer science students need to be allowed to have open acess to computer laboratory. Internet facility should be made available after college hours to day and hostel scholars.
Bright students academic requirments need to be fulfilled by the college. It is suggested that a mechanism of intense interaction between the teacher and the learner is evolved to overcome academic starvation of the students.
Women need to be honoured and utmost care has to be taken about the welfare and psychological development of the young girls. The college needs to note this point.
Payment to the supporting and teaching faculty needs to be made through banks, so that the financial worries are minimized.
