Profile of Womens Christian College (WCC)Almost from the beginning, the College has had ties with similar institutions both in India and abroad. In the U.S.A. Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts has adopted this College as its sister College and from time to time has sent gifts of both money and books. In fact, as a gesture of gratitude one of the hostels in WCC has been named as the Mount Holyoke hostel and the Inter-class cultural festival is known as the Mount Holyoke culturals. Since many of the graduates went on to take up teaching jobs, a daughter institution for training graduates to teach was started in 1937 with a member of Faculty, Miss Nora Brockway as its first Principal. It was called the Saint Christophers Training College for women and moved from our campus to its own campus in Vepery.

NAAC report of Womens Christian College (WCC)Section 1: Introduction
The Women s Christian College(Autonomous) Chennai established in 1915 is a Grant-in-aid autonomous college affiliated to University of Madras. The college is situated in a spacious campus of 18 acres in the heart of the city. The mission of the college although reviewed from time to time, still reflects the original ideal of liberation of women for uninhibited total development. It is objective is to offer an education that can create generations of intellectually excellent, morally upright, spiritually inspired and professionally sound young women to illuminate their own home and their motherland. The college at present caters to 2366 students. It has 144 teachers and 110 non teaching staff. The college is recognized under 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission Act. It became autonomous in the year 1982.
The college was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1998 and subsequently it applied for reaccreditation in March 2005. A Peer Team was constituted by the NAAC to visit the college and validate the Re-accreditation Report. The team consisted of the following members - Dr. Mariamma A. Varghese, Former Vice-Chancellor of SNDT Women s University, Mumbai as Chairperson; Dr. K. M. Mathew, Former Dean of Social Sciences and Registrar, Goa University, Goa and Dr. M. D. P. Rao, Former Principal, Khalikhote Autonomous College, Berhampur, Orissa as members of the team. The peer team was co-ordinated by Mr. B. S. Ponmudiraj, Assistant Adviser, NAAC. The team visited the college from 21st to 23rd March 2005.
The college offers a wide range of courses, 17 undergraduate and 8 postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate programmes have a choice of 37 options with a maximum of 5 electives and 5 supporting courses in a department. The postgraduate programmes offer choices up to a maximum of 2 in a semester. It offers UGC vocational programmes from 1994. Since the last accreditation, the college has initiated a number of self-financed undergraduate programmes, Corporate Economics, B.Com, B.Com (non-Mathematics) B.B.A, B.Sc. Visual Communication and the postgraduate programmes, M.Sc. Physics with Electronics, M.Sc. Information Technology, M.Sc. Computer Science & Technology, M.Sc. Biotechnology and M.A. Communication.
The peer team carefully analyzed the reaccreditation report along with the e-format submitted by the institution. They have visited all the departments and common facilities. They had interaction with the Principal, the Management, the faculty, the students, the non-teaching staff, parents and alumni. Based on the analysis of the report and the quantitative data provided by the college and the information gathered through interaction with the various stakeholders, the team has validated the reaccredidttion report. It has presented its objective assessment keeping in mind the seven criteria identified by NAAC, the core indicators under each criteria, core values incorporated as contexts for reaccreditation and the action taken by the college for quality sustenance and quality enhancement since the last accreditation.
Section 2: Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
The Women s Christian College, Chennai has a mission statement and well formulated goals to impart holistic education to women to make them self-confident, professionally equipped and spiritually inspired. The goal is made known to its various stake-holders through the college handbook, orientation programmes, periodical circulars and the college website.
The College offers 17 UG programmes and 8 postgraduate programmes. Several combinations are available in UG programmes with 37 options and a maximum of five electives and five supporting courses in a department. The postgraduate programmes have choices upto a maximum of two in a semester.
The undergraduate programmes offered in Psychology, Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics, Computer Science, Mathematics, English Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology and History have been updated. The Postgraduate programmes offered in Psychology, Home Science, Computer Science and Physics have facilitated graduates of these disciplines to have the benefit of vertical mobility within the same campus.
Besides vertical mobility, horizontal mobility is provided to some extent by introducing add-on courses. Journalism, Video Production, Advertising and Public Relations, Certificate Course in Food Preservation, value added courses in Financial Accounting and Cost management Accounting, Vocational Training Course in Biotechnology, Certificate course in Airlines and Travel Management were introduced during the last five years. Besides, B.Com., B.B.A. B.C.A., B.Sc. Visual Communication, B.A. in Corporate Economics and postgraduate programmes in Communication, Biotechnology, Physics and Information Technology are introduced on self-financing basis.
M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes are offered by the departments of Home Science and Psychology. Inter-disciplinary papers like Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Microbiology are offered by the department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology. Workshop practice and Fibres, Fabrics, Printing and Dyeing of textiles are offered as elective courses to all students which provide practical skills and entrepreneurship. In addition to the wide range of core, elective and supportive options made available to the students, value education in the curriculum has been a unique feature of the college curriculum.
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced in all the grant - in - aid UG and PG programmes under the autonomous system. All the self-financing UG and PG programme follow the semester system under the university curriculum. Games, Value Education and Extension work help learners to earn credits to the total programme.
Feed back on curriculum content and curriculum transactions is obtained from the students. Student views are communicated to the Boards of studies and Academic council through the student representatives. Industry provides feed back after the completion of internship by students in the relevant vocational courses. The feed back from academic peers, industry, students and alumnae are used by the college to update the curriculum.
Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
On an average, the demand ratio for admission to the College is 1:8. It has shown an upward trend over the years. Students are selected based on the academic records and also following the government policy of reservations. The college also reserves seats for physically challenged, children of ex-servicemen, and other deserving students, There is provision for sports quota while admitting students.
The college has 181 teaching days. In the beginning of every semester, a teaching plan is prepared according to the academic calendar and is strictly adhered to. Participatory methods like group discussions, seminars and guest lectures constitute 50% of the teaching methodology. Overhead projectors, slide projectors and computers/ compact discs are used as teaching aids. Laboratory training, field of studies, visit to industries and institutions, and on the job training facilitate the students in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Student projects and dissertations are innovative approaches in teaching, learning and evaluation. Internet facility is available for staff and students in their respective departments free of cost, while the same facility in the library is offered for a nominal charge.
A screening test is conducted at the beginning of the first semester for Part I Tamil and French and for Part II English, and students are divided into different groups according to their capability. Different programmes are designed and offered to these groups. The Department of Mathematics organizes a formal remedial course with well-defined syllabus. A remedial course in Spoken English is offered to all the students of different departments. Advanced learners are allotted a group of about ten slow learners for remedial help. The CBCS facilitates the advanced learners to acquire 10 credits by taking additional courses. They are also involved in doing advanced assignments, presenting seminars and contributing articles to the college magazine and in opting for challenging elective options.
Seventy eight teaching posts are sanctioned out of which 65 are filled up by grant-in-aid permanent staff. Besides the above, there are 79 teachers appointed by the management for both aided courses and self-financing courses. The teacher-student ratio is 1:16 for aided courses and 1:17 for self-financing courses. 50% of the permanent teachers possess Ph.D. degree. Teachers are appointed on the basis of UGC and State government norms..
Teachers are encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences, faculty development programmes, refresher courses and workshops. A Few faculty members publish their research in national and international Journals.
Teachers performance is assessed by students informally at the end of each semester. The feed back is conveyed to the individual teachers. A formal system of self-appraisal is followed at the end of the academic year which is reviewed by the Heads of Departments.
Evaluation schedule of the students is put up on the notice board for the whole semester. Students performance is continuously assessed by course teachers by holding three tests in each subject. The pattern of assessment gives equal weightage to continuous internal assessment and end-semester examinations. Answer scripts are evaluated centrally with the help of external examiner/paper setter and internal examiner. Transparent norms are set for retotalling and revaluation.
Some of the faculty members have received awards and distinctions. A faculty member from Management Studies has received Madras Management Academy award. Another faculty member from Visual Communication has received UN and UNESCO best-photographer award. For contribution to Tamil Language literature and society at large, a faculty member of the Department of Tamil has been honoured. A teacher of the Physics Department has been invited as guest scientist at CCCM, Hyderabad under Young Scientist Fellowship programme of Tamil Nadu State Council of Science and Technology.
Initiatives taken by the college towards learner-centred approach in teaching-learning are appreciated by the Peer Team.
Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension
The college has made some efforts to promote research. Research Committee of the college helps in submitting proposals for funding. Study leave is granted for availing of the Faculty Improvement Programme of the UGC. The college sanctions upto Rs.5000/- a year for registration and travel to faculty members for presenting papers in conferences and seminars. Further, the Management provides seed money to faculty for undertaking relevant research.
Two departments of the college are recognized research departments. Out of the 65 permanent teachers in the college, 33 possess Ph.D. degree and 25 have registered. During the last five years 10 have acquired Ph.D. Twenty five research papers were published in international journals and 22 in national journals. Research papers were presented in 120 national seminars,39 international seminars and 73 State level seminars. The College has organized 6 national seminars, 4 State level Seminars and 9 workshops. Faculty members have participated in 50 refresher courses, 18 orientation programmes.and 95 workshops..
During the last five years 3 research projects(major and minor) with a total outlay of Rs.5.33 lakhs funded by UGC, KELLOGGS India have been completed. There are 4 ongoing research projects(major and minor) with an outlay of Rs.12.44 lakhs funded by UGC and Almond Board of California. Though the research performance is good in some departments, it is not in proportion to the large number of qualified faculty in the college.
The college offers honorary consultancy services to a number of institutions through the departments of Psychology and Home Science. Similar services need to be initiated by other departments after strengthening and formalizing the system.
The college has four kinds of extension activities, three of which are in outreach work and one in campus activities. These activities are voluntary for the second and third year students. First year students earn credits for the extension activities. The extension activities are taken up through Rotaract Club, NSS, Red Ribbon Club, Enviro Club, Child Development Centre and Vikaas . The various extension activities include promotion of awareness campaigns against AIDS, blood donation and pulse polio service, preparation of teaching aids to school children. The Enviro Club functions in the campus and looks after the maintenance of the campus. The Child Development Centre established in the department of Psychology offers extension services such as Psychological assessment of children and Psycho educational services to those in the age group between 6 and 20 who are mentally retarded. Vikaas, a student counselling centre provides personal and academic counseling.
There is improvement in research activities, participation in refresher courses, orientation courses, seminars, publications and extension activities since the last accreditation.
Criterion IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The College campus is spread over 18 acres of prime land. There are 28 buildings in the campus. There are 69 class rooms, 40 study rooms, 31 laboratories and 12 stores. The infrastructure has been improved over the years with the addition of a four storeyed new building which is situated at the entrance of the campus. This building will provide accommodation to many science laboratories. There is optimum utilization of infrastructure, by organizing evening shifts for self-financing programmes. The infrastructure is adequate for the existing academic and administrative functions. During the year 2003 - 2004, Rs.84.43 lakhs was allotted for infrastructure development.
The management takes care of the maintenance of the infrastructures . There is a full time supervisor and other supporting staff to take care of the daily maintenance. The Building committee of the college attends to the overall upkeep of the premises and support systems. The department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology has separate instrumentation room to maintain costly equipment. The department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology has its own instrumentation centre. During the year 2003 - 2004, Rs.27.55 lakhs were allotted for maintenance of infrastructure.
The college library is housed in a separate two storeyed building. The spacious reading halls, reference hall, periodical section and vast stack area offers a conducive atmosphere for reading and reference. At a time around 300 students can utilize the library. The library has a total collection of about 60,500 books and it subscribes to about 125 periodicals and journals. The library follows an open access system and is fully automated. The internet facility in the library ensures access to the worldwide online database. The regularly updated database is available on the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The Local Area Network (LAN) enables easy access to information at various sections of the library. Photocopying facility is available in the library. Book bank facility is offered to the needy students. The library is kept open from 08.00 AM to 06.15 PM. During the last five years, 5778 books have been added to the library. There are 9 PC terminals in the library.
There are 184 computers and accessories in the college. The number of computers have been increased to accommodate the increased strength of the students over the last five years. Every department of the college is equipped with computers to facilitate data processing, preparation of reports etc. Last year, about Rs.7 lakhs were earmarked for computers. On an average, about Rs.8000/- are spent for the maintenance of computers through annual contract system with Infonet India pvt ltd. The computer science department offers a free computer awareness programme to train students as per request. The department trained the office staff in computer skills. It has introduced an innovative programme called Apticlub which sharpens the abilities of reasoning. The students have access to broadband internet connectivity and this facilitates the students to refer to the latest information relating to any topic.
The Physical Education department provides facilities for sports and games. Sports activities have been made compulsory. Every First year student has to choose one of the fifteen games / activities that are offered by the college. The department has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. A mini Gymnasium is maintained in the department and this is open to all students from 06.45 AM to 04.00 PM. This year the department has introduced Yoga and Aerobic classes for the First year students on a voluntary basis.
There are five hostels in the campus. One is exclusively for the PG students. The hostels have 146 rooms accommodating 357 students. The facilities in the hostel include a big dining hall, Common Room, facilities for indoor games, laundry and solar heaters for hot water. There is a Sick Room and a lady doctor is available for consultation from Monday to Friday. Student senators on each floor of the hostel ensure overall discipline among the residents. The residents find community living in the hostels meaningful and enriching. The hostels have helped to build friendship and memories that the Almunae always cherish as a valuable part of their campus experience.
The college has a spacious, well-equipped canteen and a non-resident centre, a workshop, an extension counter of a nationalized bank and a student store. All these facilities are enjoyed and appreciated by the students.
Criterion V: Student Support and Progression
The support system provided in the college has enabled good progression of students in academics, sports, cultural activities and community services. The campus ethos has provided a good ambience for progression.
The student strength of the college has been increasing over the years. The college has at present 2366 students on the roll. The student profile is diverse and cosmopolitan and it also caters to the students of economically and socially weaker sections. The admission policy is based on merit. The state reservation policy is strictly followed in admission. However, as a minority institution, reservations are made for Christian applicants within the permissible framework. Over 90% are from the state of Tamil Nadu, 8 % from other states and a nominal number from the overseas.
Remedial Teaching is provided to learners whenever required in the departments of English, French, Mathematics, Chemistry and other Sciences. The advanced learners undertake activities to help slow learners, present seminars, write in the college magazine and do project work. Visually challenged students are assisted by teachers and students in reading texts or writing for them.
The results of examinations have been consistently good during the past 5 years. 81% of those admitted complete the course work. The dropout rate is 5%. During 2003-2004, about 80.8% of the UG students passed the final examination, while the percentage of pass is 82.4% in PG classes.
The career guidance cell of the college plays a significant role by offering placements, counseling, training and services. It arranges campus interviews and organizes certificate and diploma courses which enhance employability. During 2003-2004 over 130 students were selected for placement at campus interviews. Allround progress has been made possible because of large number of vocational courses offered especially in humanities and languages. Tourism in History, Journalism in English and Functional Hindi have helped the students to find gainful employment.
There is a network of student support systems in the campus. An updated handbook is the main source of information about the goals of the institution, courses offered, faculty, admission policy, eligibility, rules and regulations of the college, list of prizes, calendar of events and list of holidays etc. Detailed information about the college is also displayed on the college website. The college provides orientation to the freshers and their parents. Freshers are introduced to all the facilities available to the students.
Two specially trained NSS volunteers assist the counselor. The Department of Psychology runs the Counselling Centre(VIKAAS). It aims at total personality development, self-confidence,tackling problems of weak memory and poor time management etc. The College has a modified tutorial system called the Advisor-Advisee system. Ten to twenty students are attached to a teacher for this purpose. The teachers monitor the wards by maintaining records of each of the students. Such close monitoring fosters rapport between them.
The college has excelled in dramatics and involves many students in theatre workshops. The achievements of the students in inter-collegiate tournaments are good. A student won a gold medal at the 20th National Junior Rowing Championship held in U.P. Students have also won laurels in other national meets. Students have distinguished themselves in various cultural programmes, quizzes, debates and performing arts.
Financial support is given to the students in the form of merit and need-based scholarships by government and the college. During the last 5 years, 106 students received Central Government Hindi scholarships; 1732 received state government scholarships for reserved category. 72 got merit scholarships and 325 received Merit-cum means scholarships. During the last five years, Rs. 15 lakhs were distributed as scholarship to the students.. The college also assists students to obtain sponsorship from industry and other agencies.
The Alumnae Association keeps contact with its alma mater. It offers assistance to the projects of the college and forges a link between the past and the present. The Association has on its roll 2300 life members. Some of them occupy eminent positions in Government and other Organizations. The Association looks after the maintenance of the college clock tower and also a nursery school for the benefit of slum children. It also designed and sponsored the landscaping of the two quadrangles in the science block. The Association also raised Good Samaritan Fund which is mainly used for medical facilities for needy students.
There are 2 NSS units for 380 students with 2 programme officers. The NSS organizes 10 days annual camps and undertakes activities like community education, health care, vocational training, tree planting etc. It also organizes a seminar and a blood donation camp every year. The Enviro club spreads awareness on environment.
The college library has study materials for competitive examinations like CAT, GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, NET/SLET, etc. Coaching classes for IAS, CA etc. have been organized on the campus by the faculty and external experts.
Criterion VI: Organization and Management
The various statutory bodies of the college meet at regular intervals and take decisions. The statutory bodies like the Governing Body, Academic Council and Boards of Studies help to make appropriate decisions through democratic process. The governance of the college seeks to translate its mission into practice in the various programmes it offers. Decision making is participatory and transparent. The Governing Body of the college has staff representatives. The students have a democratic body called Student Senate governed by elected representatives of Student Council. The Bursar and the Registrar cum Controller of Examinations perform the functions assigned to them in consultation with the Principal. The overall regulatory control rests with the Principal.
The organizational structure is well balanced and decentralization is made effective through various participatory systems. Departments have autonomy to design their curricula and update, modify and introduce new courses of study, recommend candidates for admission/appointment and mobilize resources. Curricular changes are made at Boards of Studies meetings, which are approved by the Academic Council. Each department prepares its own budget as per its needs.
The college has a perspective plan for development. There are short term and long term plans for development - to improve infrastructure, buy more computers and to raise the level of student progression to take up higher assignments and placements. The long term plan envisages to raise the status of the college, to build an indoor stadium on an international specification and to set up a national centre for Womens Studies with a comprehensive database.
The staff are selected as per norms of the Government. The college encourages development of both teaching and non teaching staff. Teachers are given study leave to take benefits of FIP. Departments are encouraged to organize national and international seminars. During 2003-2004 training on personality development and leadership, computer operation etc. were given to the non teaching staff.
During 2003-2004 the Management spent Rs.6.85 lakhs towards assistance to 103 poor students who did not get assistance from the state or central government.
Teacher performance is assessed annually besides the self appraisal by the staff.
The grievance reedressal cell consists of the Principal, the Vice-Principal, the Bursar, staff representatives on the Senate or the Executive Board and the Head of the respective department. The Advisor-Advisee system also plays a vital role in the redressal of grievances. Students go to their advisor in matters of academic and personal matters.
The main income of the college is from fees from self-funded courses. Budget allocations are evenly balanced under different levels of expenditure. Departments have a fair distribution of available resources. Financial transactions are transparent. There is sufficient resources mobilized from various sources. The unit cost of education in the college is Rs.27,680 with salaries and Rs.12,663 without salary components. All grants have been utilized optimally and utilization certificates are sent to the funding agencies. No government fund has lapsed. Apart from internal auditing, audits by the Joint Director of Collegiate Education and the Accountant General take place regularly. .
Criterion VII: Healthy Practices
The peer team has identified the following healthy practices.
TQM is initiated by the college in academic programmes, management processes, administrative efficiency, community services and in all-round development of students.
Academic programmes have improved in quality, besides the diversification of programmes.
ICT enabled pedagogy has been adopted in many programmes.

Adviser-Advisee system for effective guidance and development of the students.
Weekly Assembly programme which deal with current Socio-Cultural and Economic issues is one of the best practices.
Streaming of students according to their academic abilities and offering programmes
like language proficiency at three levels depending on their level of achievement.
Promotion of excellence, which is nurtured by the college to showcase a wealth of student s talents.
Compulsory games for all students and streaming them into various teams for competitive sports and games.
Annual Contemplation days to consolidate their gains in preparation for life ahead.
Service for the poor through various projects.
Student Senate is the most innovative management strategy the college has adopted. Elected members of the College Union are the members of the Student Senate who monitor the functioning of several units of the colleges, which are connected with residence student activities, cultural programs, extension work etc.
Value education is provided to all students.
Social responsibilities are inculcated through various extension activities.
The overall development of the learner is achieved through multi dimensional holistic curriculum, Co-curricular, Cultural, Aesthetic and community work strategies.
Spirit of Oneness that permeates all activities of the college.

Section 3: Overall Analysis

During the post accreditation period, the college has made some significant developments. Through its curricular, co-curricular and extension activities, it has carved out a name in the academic field.
Choice based credit-system offered to the students is commendable.
Value education is enabled by holistic value education, regular assembly programmes and update of current concerns and issues.
Student senate is a reflection of the democratic procedures followed by the college for the benefit of the learners.
All Boards of Studies have student representatives who take active interest in giving the appropriate feed back for restructuring courses.
Workshop Practicals in Physics give students the option to acquire life skills required.
The college has improved its infrastructural facilities and has modernized science laboratories with updated equipments over the last five years.
The college has introduced a number of self-financed courses. Curricula is restructured in almost all courses.
A career guidance center is established which is functioning as per the needs of the students.
Faculty development programmes have been enhanced.
Teaching pedagogy has been improved with the use of new technology, systematic evaluation of student outcomes, linking with other institutions and industries.
Personal counseling and academic counseling through Adviser-Advisee system have been improved.
Extension activities with community orientation is given added impetus.

Involvement of alumni in the welfare of the college is commendable.
The college has the academic ambience and adequate infrastructure facilities required for the all round development of the students.
The college has made a number of initiatives in improving quality of higher education since the last accreditation. However, the college may consider the following aspects for further quality enhancement:
Research Initiatives need to be enhanced from all departments by applying to various funding agencies.
Although consultancy has been done on an honorary basis by a few departments, the same needs to be formalized by each department not only to enhance the image of academic contribution by professionals but also to generate more resources.
An addition of NCC Wing would be desirable for further the development of the women students and to enhance outreach by students.
Specific plans need to be developed to have more post graduate programmes under autonomy to generate relevant and sustainable programmes.
Evaluation reforms such as question bank would make the system efficient and effective.
There is need for bringing the emerging areas under the autonomous college for future growth and development.
More linkages need to be initiated with industry and other organizations to exploit employment opportunities and achieve better research performance output.
Computer literacy can be provided to all students by some specialized arrangements since ICT enabled academic work and administration are imperative in today s technological environment, thereby meeting the global requirements.
IQAC needs to function more effectively to cover all quality parameters.
