Makeover for Rajasthan Technical UniversityJAIPUR: The academic council of Rajasthan Technical University (RTU) has approved several proposals to initiate a complete makeover of the varsity. From the coming session (2013), the first semester will have five subjects as against six earlier in order to minimise the study load on new students.
It was also decided to shift the engineering mechanics subject from the first semester to the second as a large number of students flunk in this subject, said R P Yadav, vice-chancellor of RTU, who completed two years in the post on Tuesday.
The council also introduced a new subject Petroleum and Space Engineering and a course on communication skills.
Introduction of communication skills as a subject in the first year will increase placement opportunities for students not comfortable with English as a medium of speech, said Yadav, adding that often students were unable to convert job opportunities due to lack of soft skills despite their intelligence and good scores.
On facing criticism over decreasing the passing marks from 33% to 30%, he said the council immediately reverted to the earlier pass percentage.
A fully online admission process to facilitate a completely paperless procedure is also on the cards, Yadav said.
On the faculty crunch, Yadav said the recruitment process will begin very soon on the sanctioned posts. He also announced provision of benefits of Career Advancement Scheme to the faculty members.
From coming session, the university will also have a complete wi-fi campus to provide students accessibility to internet from all quarters, including the RTU campus in Kota.
Weightage of mid-term marks to be reduced: Rajasthan Technical UniversityJAIPUR: In a bid to stop malpractice in distribution of internals marks to engineering students, the Rajasthan Technical University has decided to reduce the weightage of mid- term marks awarded to students.
The TOI, in its article, RTU to monitor internal marks published on May8, 2012 had reported on engineering colleges doling out marks to students.
RP Yadav, vice-chancellor of RTU said the move will bring greater transparency in the system. I will move this proposal in the academic council, he said.
Every student appears in either one or two mid-term exams of 25 marks each for all subjects in every semester. Unlike MCA internal exams, where in, the RTU appoints examiners, in case of engineering exams, the college is given the responsibility of awarding marks.
Every student has to score a minimum of 33% to clear both the exams. In every semester, over 60% students fail in at least one of the subjects.
Principal secretary, technical education Vipin Chandra Sharma however, opposed the move of reducing weightage of mid-term marks.
It will increase the stress on students, he said in the wake of rising number of suicides by engineering students.
RTU amends BTech 1st semester syllabusJaipur: There is good news for the students taking admission in Rajasthan technical university (RTU) Kota. The RTU is going to make a little change in the syllabus of BTech first semester from the next academic session 2012-13.
Engineering mechanics, which is being taught currently in the first semester, will be taught in second semester and environmental engineering will take its place in first semester. An additional subject to polish English language will be introduced by the name of communication technique (CT).
It has been observed in the last few years that several first semester students found engineering mechanics difficult to understand and failed in it.
Now, the students will have physics, chemistry, mathematics, environmental engineering and communication technique in the first semester. The change has been done in RTU for the first time. The admission process in RTU completes by October and semester exams are usually held in February. It was a pending demand of students since long as they would not get enough time to prepare for the semester examinations.
Giving information, dean of faculty of engineering H D Charan said, Students found engineering mechanics difficult, so we have introduced it in the second semester.
Also, it was noted that spoken English and communication skills of the students needed improvement. Therefore, CT has been introduced in the first semester.
The RTU over the past few months has been changing its procedures to make it more student-friendly.
Recently, after the inspection, the RTU had found seven colleges to be deficient for the renewal of their affiliation and kept their affiliation pending.

University flouts court order, dismisses plea to see answer sheetsJaipur: Three months after he filed an application under the RTI Act to see his evaluated answer sheets, Abhishek Jain is yet to see a breakthrough as the Rajasthan Technical University (RTU) has repeatedly turned down his plea.
The RTU has stubbornly refused Jains request citing National Information Commissions order in this regard and ordinance 157-a-16 of the University of Rajasthan.Yet, RTU has turned down Jains request thrice even after clear rulings in favour of students by state and national information commissions as well as the Supreme Court in other similar cases.Jain, who completed his B Tech with 78 per cent this year, had appeared for a paper (Maths -2) in June 2010, the result of which was announced in March this year. Shocked by the poor marks, Abhishek filed an RTI application on June 27 this year seeking certified photocopy of evaluated answer sheet.
When he did not receive any reply in the 30 days time period, he filed an appeal to the higher authorities. This time, he got a reply from the examination controller (also the Public Information Officer) only to learn that the university has rejected his request. The division bench of Justice RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik said, This judgment applies to all examinations, including the public service commissions, universities, CBSE and other boards, professional bodies like ICAI—in fact, every examination conducted by any agency in India.
When Jain made an addendum to the first appeal attaching Supreme Courts judgment, he got a reply from the V-C RP Yadav said, We will implement the provision to show answer sheets by the end of this month. The guidelines for this would be finalised in the upcoming board meeting on October 15.
Sun set to shine on state power generationJaipur: Rajasthan is all set to become a major hub of solar power generation by 2013. Minister for energy and higher education Dr Jitendra Singh claimed that the state will play a major part in the Central government's ambitious solar mission. As experts from the power and energy industry gathered on the RTU's campus in Kota to discuss prospects of energy sources at the national conference on power and energy systems, Dr Singh claimed that the Government of India's Jawahar solar mission aims to produce 1,000 MW of solar power by 2013.
"Our state would become major hub of solar energy in India as it would alone produce 800 MW of solar energy."
While addressing the gathering of industry experts, the minister said, "Around 100 km of land in Jaisalmer can produce 1 lakh MW of power in 320 sunny days. With the latest technology concept, the solar energy unit can wirelessly transmit power to grid via satellite."He said that the operation cost of solar energy is very less compared to the thermal power.
"At present, the operation post of 500 MW solar energy requires Rs 15-16 crore, which is quite less as compared to thermal power production cost," said the minister.
Meanwhile, foreseeing opportunities emerging in the power and energy sector, the Rajasthan Technical University will be moving ahead by launching specialised courses in power and energy systems.
Presently, the technical university offers MTech program in renewable and non-conventional sources and is designing similar programme at the undergraduate level."The state of state will become major hub of solar power as the government is encouraging non-conventional energy sources by investing huge funds. It will raise employability for which the trained and skill manpower will be required in future," said RP Yadav, vice-chancellor, RTU (Kota).
Govt warns 6 pvt institutes for collecting 'irregular fee'Jaipur : Technical institutions in Rajasthan are fleecing students by charging them more money than the fee prescribed by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the state government admitted in the Assembly on Monday. In its report, the government also admitted that most engineering institutes, MBA and MCA – 202 out of 306 – did not fulfil the parameters laid down by AICTE.
The government's reply came on a question asked by MLA Ranveer Singh. "We have warned six private technical institutes through the affiliating body, Rajasthan Technical University, for violating fee regulations," the technical education department said in its report. The institutes were found to be recovering "irregular fee" from the students under various heads other than the tuition fee.Contrary to the department's reply in the Assembly, principal secretary, technical education, Vipin Chandra Sharma said there was no institute in his knowledge where norms were not fulfiled. On being informed about the answer tabled by the department in the Assembly, he said, "show me what you have got from the Assembly."
RP Yadav, vice-chancellor, Rajasthan Technical University, admitted that there were complaints of irregular payment of fee or refund of excess amount charged by these institutes. "The Siddhi Vinayak College has been warned to refund fee charged from students."
RTU to offer job-oriented courses on industrys demandJaipur: Based on industry requirements, the Rajasthan Technical University has added new courses for the upcoming session which starts from July. The students of Bachelor of Technology will have an added choice of Petroleum, Energy and Space Engineering courses, apart from other courses.

He said the courses have been framed considering the industry demand. Similarly, the RTU also plans to start new courses on transportation technology.Apart from adding fresh courses to the curriculum, the RTU is using advocating a system for timely declaration of results and other examination duties. Once the students register their profile on RTUs portal, they will be able to process various functions through the website. It includes online enrolment, evaluation and result declaration, added Yadav.
He said that engineering colleges will be able to upload internal and external marks of the students saving much time and energy. To improve the technical education, the RTU is also making efforts to overcome the shortage of staff. Since its inception in 2005, RTU had been suffering from shortage of staff that affected administrative duties that ultimately disgruntle the students.
Soon, the RTU will kick off the drive to recruit teaching and non-teaching employees. Yadav said that the notification will be declared soon to recruit 54 teaching staff (professors, associate professors) and 66 non-teaching staff for administrative duties.
