Brain gain: Foreign teachers show interest in Central varsity

Jaipur.Kishangarh: The Central University of Rajasthan, operating from Kishangarh, is attracting faculties not only from other states but those established in countries abroad. As the interviews for various faculty positions (one-year contractual) started at Central University of Rajasthan on Monday, the selection committee was enthusiastic to interview the applicants from other countries.

The university authorities had even made special arrangements for the foreign applicants as they didnt have to drop in to the campus but were interviewed through video conferencing on internet that proved to be cost-efficient and time-saving exercise.

However, the vice-chancellor of the Central University terms the process to be Brain Gain in contrast to the Brain Drain.

Our country has lost many talented and skilled people as they preferred to settle abroad after completing studies here. It was a brain drain process and now we can see that we are gaining them back as the service conditions have improved with the effect of globalisation, said Prof MM Salunkhe, vice-chancellor, Central University of Rajasthan. He even claims that the special arrangements of video conferencing through Skype were unique in the country in any educational institution, especially the government-funded institutions. Till date we havent yet come across interviews for teaching positions through video conferencing in any university or college of the country, he added.

On Monday, the selection committee interviewed almost 9 candidates through Skype who were based in USA, South Korea, France and Canada among a total of 25 applicants for various positions in Biotechnology department.
Officials in the Central University of Rajasthan informed to have received more than 5,000 applications for 56 teaching positions including professor, associate professor and assistant professors.

However, the faculty positions are being limited to applicants of Indian origin only. Experts claimed that sixth pay commission salaries in India is now attracting the talented pool wishing to come back and serve the country.

Similarly, the Central University of Rajasthan claims to provide web interviews for candidates based in foreign countries only while the candidates residing in other parts of the state had been asked to appear physically to face the interviews.

Central varsity staff suspended for calling applicants

Jaipur: As a major setback to recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff in Central University of Rajasthan, it was found out that the process was at risk. One of its employees, working in the mess on contractual basis, was making prank calls to the applicants regarding the process and its authorities has suspended the employee.

However, the detail of the calls and the caller's intention would only be ascertained after an investigation.
The matter came to light when few of the applicants complained to the vice-chancellor's office about the prank calls received from an employee of the university. Subsequently, the university administration has suspended the class IV employee and lodged an FIR at a nearby police station in Kishangarh for violation of secrecy.

"We have suspended one of the class IV employees, Thakur Singh alias Chhotu Gehlot, who worked in the mess of the university. He accepted making certain calls to candidates without being authorised by the university administration. It's a risk towards confidentiality of the application process and we had taken the step to ensure this," said Prof MM Salunkhe, V-C, Central University of Rajasthan. He said that details of candidates being leaked is a sensitive issue as the selection process is nationalised.

Sources claim that the accused has accepted making certain calls but didn't reveal as to who had authorised or asked him to do so. The vice-chancellor also rules out authorising any of his calls on behalf of the university. "We have handed over the matter to the police to nail the exact person who leaked details of the candidates," added Salunkhe, claiming that the guilty would be dealt according to rules of central government.

The university has received more than 5,000 applications from across the country for various teaching and non-teaching posts.

Commerce grads are now eligible for TET

Jaipur: The latest circular of National Council for Teacher Education has come as a major relief for lakhs of Commerce graduates for setting them eligible to appear in Teachers Eligibility Test from now onwards.
Chief minister Ashok Gehlot made this announcement during foundation stone laying ceremony of Central University of Rajasthan on Tuesday.

We had requested the Union Ministry to allow Commerce graduates with BEd degrees to appear for Teachers Eligibility Test. The Union ministry had accepted the request on grounds that the recruitment process for 50,000 teachers in the state had been pending as only TET-qualified candidates would have been eligible for the same, said Gehlot.

It is learnt that a few Commerce graduates had challenged the state government and Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education in the high court, following which the Jodhpur bench of high court had issued stay orders, leading to a halt in recrutiment process.

Meanwhile, sources in the board claim that the latest notification from Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) will be communicated to judiciary in order to restart the process for TET.

In a bid to ensure quality standards under the Right to Education Act, the NCTE recently made it mandatory for all BEd degree-holders desirous of becoming teachers at elementary level (classes 1-8) to qualify Teachers Eligibility Test. However, the notification was not clear about including BCom graduates having BEd degrees in the list of eligibles.
