Admission scam in MNIT

Fri Oct 15 2010
19 students took admission in MNIT on forged Nepalese identity 'proofs'

The name of another engineering institute of national repute has cropped up during investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the scam involving fraudulent admissions of students under a scheme meant for foreign students at the Punjab Engineering College (PEC). The mastermind in the scam, Nishikant, in a similar modus operandi, managed to secure admissions for a large number of students in the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, the CBI said.

The probe has revealed that as many as 19 students from remote districts in Punjab and Haryana secured admission in MNIT, Jaipur, by submitting forged Nepalese identity cards. They availed of the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme and never appeared for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) mandatory for admission of foreign students under the scheme, the CBI said.

The facts were revealed during the sustained questioning of Mahinder Bajaj, arrested accomplice of Nishikant. Bajaj was sent to judicial custody today by the court. Sources in the CBI said they have transmitted all the relevant details to their counterparts in Jaipur.

Besides, the CBI also said that Mahinder Bajaj is a dental technician based in Hisar and came in contact with Nishikant. They formed an association and Bajaj brought some of his clients to Nishikant who were eager to gain admission in engineering institutes by hook or crook. The students paid huge amounts for the fraudulent admissions and the money was shared by Nishikant, Mahinder Bajaj and Kishore Yadav (absconding accused).

'PEC was never the sole institute where students took admissions by fraudulent means under the DASA scheme. A total of 31 institutes across the country have been under our scanner and we had written to NIT Surathkal, Karnataka, which is the authority for DASA, to verify the antecedents of students admitted under this scheme. The name of the institute in Jaipur has cropped up,' said DIG Mahesh Aggarwal of the CBI.

On September 8, the CBI had registered a case of forgery against 11 students of PEC who took admission on the basis of forged Nepalese identity cards under a scheme meant for enrolling foreign students and NRIs.

Incidentally, it has been learnt that Bajaj's daughter also took admission in an engineering institute on the basis of forged Nepalese identity documents. His family, however, said Bajaj was unaware of the conspiracy and was taken in by the false promises of Nishikant.

MNIT faces CBI probe for fake admissions

Jaipur: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Thursday inquired about admissions made in the Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur on fake documents made in Nepal. CBI sleuths started investigating admissions in the engineering college after it busted a nationwide racket that provided admission to students in premier institutes on the basis of forged documents.According to sources, seats meant for foreign students in the engineering colleges were filled up on the basis fake documents submitted by the students.

According to CBI officials admissions were secured showing the students as residents of Nepal making them eligible for the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme, under which foreign nationals and NRIs can pursue education.
