Message of Dheeraj Sanghi, Director, LNM Institute of Information Technology
Welcome to LNM Institute of Information Technology, a unique experiment in technical education. We are, arguably, the first technical institute to be setup in the public-private partnership model. We have the blessings of Rajasthan Government on one hand, and a very active support of Shri Lakshmi Mittal on the other hand - best of both worlds, as they say. We have been extremely fortunate to have several people on our governing council, who are great visionaries. Besides Shri Mittal, who is himself the Chairman, we have people who have built companies and institutions, world renowned professors, persons with large administrative experience, including Chief Secretary of Rajasthan. LNMIIT is a University under UGC Act, and this gives us complete freedom in academic processes. We can decide our own degrees, our own curriculum, etc. We conduct our own exam. We are free to have our own admission process - though we admit through central counseling of AIEEE.

We started in 2003 with only 27 students in a rented space in the city of Jaipur. Our campus was inaugurated in May 2005 by Honorable Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Today we have about 500 students living on a campus which is so beautiful that one could confuse us with a resort. When the state government gave us this 100-acre plot, there was only one tree on it. Today, there is green cover in most part of the campus, with exquisitely maintained lawns, and trees of all types. Considering the number of different types of birds that we see on our campus, we have a strong suspicion that the migratory birds have confused us with Bharatpur bird sanctuary. The architecture is modern, and yet rooted in the local heritage. When you go past the campus, the buildings of the campus will remind you that you are close to the Pink City. We are only 12KM away from the first planned city of the country, but in an area where we only see green hills all around us.

We started with an undergraduate program in a non-traditional discipline, which we called 'Computer and Communication Engineering.' The idea was that Computing and Communication are two of the fastest growing fields, and even better are merging with each other. So, someone who is an expert in both will be able to face the technology development challenges of the future much more effectively than the one, who knows about one field and not the other. However, India does need people who are deeper experts in only Computer Science, or in Electronics and Communication. So, when we wanted to expand our offerings, we chose to do the obvious, and have started offering a BTech program in both CS and EC. We also have MTech, MS, and PhD programs in the Institute. So far, we have pretty much behaved like any other IIIT in the country, but the plans are afoot to have a more broad-based institute. We plan to start several programs in science in the next couple of years, and then we will expand into other areas as well.

The strength of our institute lies in our faculty. We have 16 PhDs in our faculty for about 500 students, a ratio of 1:31 for PhD faculty to students. While this ratio does not inspire us, it must be noted that we have the highest PhD faculty to student ratio outside the original IITs. We have taken a conscious decision to not consider non-PhDs as faculty (with some rare exceptions). We call them LNM Scholars. Any other college would call them faculty. If we include them in the faculty, then our faculty to student ratio is about 1:16, again one of the best ratios amongst the technical education institutions. Going beyond the numbers, most faculty members in the Institute have taught at one of the IITs, or have a degree from one of the IITs. This type of faculty profile is unheard of in the Indian technical education scenario. And as a result the academic standards in the Institute are very high.

The students are the most important stake holders of LNMIIT. In fact, philosophically, most educational institutions put faculty at the center of their planning, and every decision is taken from that perspective. Not in LNMIIT. While faculty is an extremely important part of the system, and we provide all types of support to our faculty to enable them to carry out their teaching and research effectively, we realize that students (and alumni) have a greater stake in the system. The simple fact of the matter is that once someone gets a degree from LNMIIT, they can't escape from mentioning it in their resume. Work experience can be de-emphasized, but not the education background. If LNMIIT name gets better recognition, faculty feels proud to have contributed towards it, but the real beneficiaries are alumni (and students, who will be alumni).

Since students and alumni have the highest stake, we involve students in every decision making in the Institute. They are even represented on the Academic Council, the highest decision making body of the Institute for all academic decisions. All administrative decisions are taken from the perspective that they should help the students in the long term. We invite alumni routinely for suggestions on all aspects of the Institute. The quality of students in the Institute is extremely good. Merit is the only criterion to get admission in LNMIIT. There is no management quota, NRI quota, or any other quota. The placement has been good for the two batches that have graduated. All the students were placed, as should be expected from any good engineering college in the country.

I certainly do not wish to give the impression that everything is perfect in LNMIIT. One of the major weaknesses has been that we have not paid sufficient attention on letting people know what magic we are doing in the foothills of Aravali. But things are fast changing. We are on the move, and we are determined to achieve our rightful place in the galaxy of great institutions. We have a very aggressive faculty recruitment going on. We provide a compensation package to our faculty which is the best in the Indian academia, better than IITs. We are planning for a second phase of infrastructure development for increased student intake, and Mr. Mittal has categorically stated that the next phase has to have an even better infrastructure than the first phase. We are expanding our library, increasing the bandwidth, developing more recreational facilities.

I am a great believer in networking and communication. We have created groups for LNMIIT stake holders on yahoogroups, googlegroups, linkedin, facebook, and so on. I myself write regularly to all stake holders to share the excitement of LNMIIT. If you want to hear from me, please let me know, and I will add you to the list. I know it is much longer than a traditional message that you will find on websites of various institutions, and I thank you for your patience in going through it completely.
