Media coverage of Adesh College of Physiotherapy, Muktsar Punjab, Punjab

31 medicos get degrees

Mrs Usha R. Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, today gave away degrees to 31 students of the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences at the convocation of the college.

Dr J.S. Gujral, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, was the chief guest. Dr H.S. Gill, Chairman, and Ms Nirupama Juneja, Principal of the college, also attended the function.

Physiotherapy students block traffic

Students of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) of the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences, Muktsar, today blocked traffic in front of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences for about an hour. The blockade affected traffic on the Faridkot-Kotkapura road.

The protesters lamented that the university was giving them only one chance (in December) to clear the subject in which they had failed. They said the rule led to the wastage of one academic year as if they failed in the only chance given to them they would have to appear in all papers in July and they could appear for the next class paper after one year. They said other universities were following the carry on rule under which students could continue with subject of next year while clearing the papers of previous year. They said the university had implemented the carry on rule for the MBBS and the BAMS courses following strikes by students of these courses.

Highlighting their other grievance, the student representatives said if they failed in theory paper of a subject they had to appear for theory as well as practical examination and vice versa, which was again not the case with other varsities. They demanded that they should be made to appear only for the part (theory or practical) in which they had failed.

Later, a police party rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating students. The blockade was lifted after the varsity officials asked them to hand over a letter detailing their demands. The university officials said the matter would be discussed at a meeting on September 14.

More dental seats in Punjab likely

Panjab University is likely to allow Christian Dental College to increase the seats in first year from 20 to 40.

Also on the anvil is granting provisional affiliation to Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences, Muktsar, for starting a nursing course. The course will have an intake of 60 students.

The university is also considering granting provisional affiliation to Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, Hospital and Research Institute, Ludhiana, for starting a new course in dentistry. The institute will have an intake of 100 students in the first session.

All these proposals will find place in the coming Syndicate meeting of the university.

The Adesh Institute will have 15 members on the management committee, including the principal and two teacher representatives. The society has informed the university that it has acquired approximately 32 acres of land where it proposes to construct the institute within a year. The infrastructure to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh will have to conform to the Indian Nursing Council s norms.

The institute will offer a four-year B.Sc Nursing course. It is now offering a three-year course in general nursing and midwifery.

The Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, Ludhiana, has already been approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the session 1998-99. There will be an intake of 100 students in the first session.

In case of Christian Dental College, the Dental Council of India has already approved the 40 seats. The college also has an eligibility certificate from the Punjab Government. The Vice-Chancellor of PU, Prof M M Puri, in April, 1998, had allowed the increase in the seats.

Sources indicate that the issue of seats in Christian Dental College may come up for a detailed discussion. After the VC allowed the increase in seats a committee was constituted in May. It inspected the college on June 8.

The report should have been tabled before the Syndicate much earlier, certain Fellows feel.
