Punjab becoming a hub of technical education under Badal govt

Dera Bassi-Chandigarh: Punjab Technical Education Minister Chaudhry Swarna Ram on Saturday claimed that the state had made progress during his tenure and that fewer Punjabis were now travelling to Bangalore, Pune and other cities in south India in search of quality education.

Addressing newspersons at a programme in Sukhmani College here, Ram said even foreigners come to Punjab on a student visa to get quality education and that under the rule of the Badal government improvement in educational infrastructure, good faculty, subsidised fee rates and world-class information technology had been instrumental in attracting students from Delhi, Haryana, Himachal, UP, Jharkhand and Bihar to the state.

According to Ram, in the four years that he has headed the technical education ministry, the number of engineering colleges in the state has gone up from 20 to 93.

Some 92,000 students are currently studying in Punjab s engineering colleges, 93,600 are attending polytechnics while 58,000 go to ITIs, Ram said, adding that the placement rate of pass outs was a record 100 per cent.

He also said that graduates from the Punjab Technical University (PTU) were highly sought after even by foreign employers.

Answering a question about the development of technical education in the state, Ram said, 250 skill development centres (SDCs) will be formed at the block level, with each catering to ten villages.

The SDCs will impart training in 80 vocational courses with fee concessions for meritorious students, Ram said.

He also announced the setting up of 43 new ITIs in the state within the next one year.
