Medical Council of India (MCI) has permitted Chintpurni Medical College, at Pathankot in Gurdaspur district with total intake of 150 seats for MBBS. As the Chintpurni medical college was the new venture and the approval of Gurudwara election commission mandatory for the government.Punjab Government has initially delayed the clearance and in the meantime model code of conduct for SGPC elections was enforced. The government has sent file to Gurudwara election commission only last week for latters clearance. When contacted the secretary medical education Anjali Bhawra did not reveal the details about the new college and said that holding the 2nd counseling was the domain of BFUHS. When asked about the government’s clearance and later nod from Gurudwara election commission she refused to comment on the issue. On other hand the vice chancellor of BFUHS SS Gill, when contacted, said that We have been waiting for Punjab Governments nod regarding the approval of new college whenever we would receive it we would hold the 2nd counseling. He further added that we would have to complete the process by September 30 as per the norms of MCI. Meanwhile the students and their parents have demanded the intervention of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to ask the authorities concern to speed up the matter and relieve their concern. Punjab has 9 medical colleges for including three governments with the total intake of 995 seats in MBBS. By adding new college the seats will be raised upto 1145. Another new medical college which has got the nod from government is Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar for 150 seats. There are 15 dental colleges including two governments with total intake of 1230 seats. On new dental college Rayat and Bahra of Mohali with the 100 seats also started this year. Delay in counselling for MBBS admission irks parentsChintpurni Medical College is the only private college in the state which could not hold the first counselling because it is waiting for a nod for the second counselling from Dr SS Gill, the Vice-Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. Delay in counselling for admission of students in MBBS courses for the current session beginning from September 30, in the Chintpurni Medical College here has put parents and guardians in a dilemma. The first counselling for the admission to various medical courses and streams in nearly all the medical colleges, irrespective of the fact whether they are private or state-run medical colleges, have already been completed. But the only private college in the state which could not hold the first counselling is the Chintpurni Medical College here because it is waiting for a nod for the second counselling from Dr SS Gill, the Vice-Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. Dr Jagjiv Sharma, the Principal Director of the college, told The Tribune today that the authorities received the orders for conducting the first counselling only two days before, following which it was virtually impossible for the authorities to go ahead with the procedure. The authorities are waiting for orders from the Baba Farid University for holding the second counselling. He said that the orders in this regard were expected any moment and as soon the orders are received, the college will start counselling and start admission to the MBBS course for which the Medical Council of India had allotted 150 seats to the college. Dr Sharma said that the college, along with the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Jalandhar, received permission from MCI for 150 seats each for the MBBS course for the current academic session beginning from September 30. He said that the college was fully geared up to start the courses on the due date. Hospital run by philanthropists proves to be boon for poor villagersCharity, they say, begins at home. This, in essence, seems to be the motto of the Chintpurni Medical College and Hospital which has been established by a group of philanthropists just to cater to the needs of the poor and needy. The 300-bed hospital has been established in one of the remotest and most deprived tehsils of the state - Dhar Kalan - at Bungal village and is treating needy patients just on the recommendations of either the village sarpanch or any other village elder. It is pertinent to mention here that there are nearly 80 villages which fall under the jurisdiction of Dhar Kalan and a majority of them are being inhabited by poor and the underprivileged. A high-level team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) has already inspected the facilities and other infrastructure at the hospital and a green signal to start admissions to college may come anytime. Vikram Joshi, the executive director of the hospital, spread over an area of 150 acres, claims that preference is being given to the villagers who do not have money to pay for medical treatment. “We have even performed cardiac surgeries on the poorest of poor of Dhar Kalan. We have nearly 200 doctors on our rolls and possess state-of-the-art infrastructure which can be compared to the one possessed by super speciality hospitals in metropolitan cities. We have set up the hospital at Dhar Kalan because we thought that the tehsil being one of the most backward areas of Punjab, medicare facilities were virtually non-existence. People had to travel all the way to Pathankot or Amritsar for treatment.” “The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams but in active service and charity. We are funded by some philanthropic people in Delhi and Pathankot. Funds are not a problem for us. Our main aim is to treat the poor and needy although any rich person needing treatment will not be turned back,” added Joshi. Dr JK Sharma, Principal of the Medical College, disclosed, “Where there is charity and wisdom there is neither fear nor ignorance. Since we are not strapped for funds, we will continue treating poor villagers who till yet could not benefit from technological advances being maid in the medical field.” Principal Dean Medical Superintendent required at 300 bedded HospitalChintpurni School Educational Society invites applications from exceptionally brilliant academicians and support staff for its new Institutions, coming up from the session 2010-11, 300 bedded Hospital and courses of MBBS and Nursing in Pathankot-Dalhousie Road, Pathankot, Punjab.Chintpurni Medical College & Hospital Chintpurni College of Nursing (Bsc, ANM, GNM) Principal/ Dean/ Medical Superintendent Professors/ Readers/ Lecturers/ Sr. Residents/ Jr. Residents for the following departments (as per MCI/ INC Norms):- Pre-Clinical: Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-Chemistry Para-Clinical: Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Community Medicine Clinical: General Medicine & Allied:- General Medicine, Pediatrics, Chest & TB, Psychiatry, Skin & STD General Surgery & Allied:- General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT.
