Govt stops admissions to two PTU colleges

Following recommendations of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Punjab government today issued a notification to the Punjab Technical University barring it from conducting admissions for two of its affiliated colleges— Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology at Dera Bassi and Shivalik College of Pharmacy at Nangal.

Dr V.K. Arora, Dean, Academics, confirmed this to The Tribune here today.

He said orders had also been passed for the slashing of seats in two pharmacy colleges— Baba Isher Singh Pharmacy College at Kot Ise Khan, Ferozepur, (from 60 to 40) and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Polytechnic and Pharmacy College at Patti (from 60 to 45).

The only college to get bonus seats is the Akal College of Pharmacy and Technical Education at Mastuana Sahib, Sangrur. The seats have been doubled to 60.

Dr Arora said the notification did not mention the grounds on which the orders had been passed, but he added that these were clearly issued to implement the AICTE recommendations.

An AICTE team had earlier visited the colleges concerned and shown its dissatisfaction over the qualification and experience of faculty there, PTU sources said.

Dr M.S. Grewal, Registrar of the university, confirmed that the AICTE’s disapproval had been endorsed by the state government too.

He, however, added that an AICTE committee had revisited the colleges, but their review had not yet reached the university.

One of the two debarred colleges has reportedly started taking in students provisionally to keep the seats safe.

But the Registrar feigned ignorance on the matter. He said the college concerned was not allowed to take any initiative of the sort.

Meanwhile, it was the third day of the counselling session for admissions to engineering, architecture and pharmacy colleges affiliated with the Punjab Technical University, Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjabi University here.

Nearly 450 seats out of the 700 falling in the 50 per cent Sikh minority quota in rural as well as urban areas were filled during the session. Candidates seeking Backward Class seats have been asked to appear tomorrow.

Elaborate arrangements to ensure comfort for the candidates and their parents were at the Government Polytechnic for Women, the venue for the counselling session. Besides providing tents, fans and coolers, the university has also tied up with a hotel to provide subsidised meals to the visitors through a canteen.

Seminar for engg students

The NIIT Technologies, an IT education and software development company, conducted a seminar for final year students of Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering & Technology(SSIET) here today.

Speaking at the seminar, Mr Prakash said the NIIT had introduced 100% placement-oriented programme for final-year engineering students for which only the SSIET had been selected in this region.

The NIIT has a tie-up with IT giants like the Infosys, Satyam, Wipro Technologies, HCL Technologies, Mobera, Flextronics and other non-BPO companies which had spelt out their job requirements to the NIIT.

To enroll for the programme, there would be an aptitude test, group discussion and interview. This would be followed by a four-month comprehensive training as per the companies’ requirements.

Prof Avtar Singh, SSIET chairman, appreciated the efforts of the training and placement cell for organising such a seminar for benefit of students.

Prof N.S. Julka, training and placement officer, explained to the students that although placement avenues were on the rise, yet companies were quality-conscious.

College farewell party turns into nightmare for colony residents

Derabassi (Chandigarh): A farewell party was on Thursday organised by the junior batch of the Sukhmani Engineering College for the passing out students of B Tech, MBA and MCA courses.

The party turned out to be a problem for the residents of the neighbouring Saraswati Vihar Colony.

The problem started when some of the partying students entered the streets of the colony. They climbed on the roof of their cars while some peeped out of the car windows and made noise.

Some of the students also increased the volume of their car stereo and began dancing on the streets of the colony while the college management staff were busy attending the party in the college.

This made the girl students feel unsafe who had to take shelter in the neighbouring houses.

The residents of the colony got so disturbed that they had to call the police. They expressed anger over the management and staff of the college.

According to colony s Resident Welfare Association (RWA) president Rajkumar, the students played indecent songs in loud volume and some of them gathered outside the Sukhmani Girls Hostel, located inside the colony.

He further said that the students drove their vehicles in high speed on the congested streets of the colony.

Another RWA official, Sanjeev Agrawal, said that this went on for much over an hour, but the college administration did not pay any heed to the complaints. He said that some of the girl students got so scared that they even made phone calls to their parents and called them.

When asked about the hooliganism by the students, colony residents Jaipal and Shivcharan said that the organisation of the party in night was wrong.
