Honble Sh. Bhagwan Dass Arora, Ex. Minister Govt. of Punjab, driven by selfless desire, dedication and determination to serve the under privileged and to provide quality medical education, conceived an idea of starting a Dental College and Hospital at Sunam, thus providing much needed dental care to the people of his area. On 4th August 1996, Sh. Bhagwan Dass Arora along with Sh. Ashok Bansal (Advocate), Dr. Vikram Sharma, Sh. Kamal Arora and Sh. Aman Arora formed a trust in the name of Bhagwan Dass Arora CharitableTrust for the purpose and decided to set up a Dental Educational Institute by the name of Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute.

About Us
Sh. Bhagwan Dass Arora Ex. Minister Punjab who had strong belief, dedication and determination to serve the sick and to do emorable service to the cause of the medical education, conceived an idea of starting a Dental College and Hospital at Sunam for imparting dental education and providing much needed dental care to the people of this backward area. On 4th August 1996, Sh. Bhagwan Dass Arora along with Sh. Ashok Bansal Advocate and Dr. Vikram Sharma formed a trust in the name of Bhagwan Dass Arora Charitable Trust and decided to set up a Dental College in the name of Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute at Sunam. The Trust got essentiality Certificate from Punjab Government to start the Dental College. College got affiliation from Punjabi University, Patiala and now is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare granted approval to start a Dental College with sixty (60) admissions per year on 4th September, 1997. The college got permanent recognition from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Govt. of India
vide letter no. V. 12018/31/2001-PMS Dated 28.12.2001.

This is a big achievement for the college to get recognized in the shortest possible period which has been achieved by only a few dental colleges in the country. The admission capacity has been increased from 60 to 100 from Academic Session 2004-05 by Govt. of India, New Delhi vide letter no. 12017/21/2004/PMS dated 20.09.2004 and now the college is recognized for 100 seats in BDS Course. All admissions to MDS Courses were made on the basis of merit of PGET conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. Govt. of India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare New Delhi has already recognized MDS courses in seven specialties. There is no other institute in the state having MDS Course in 7 specialties. The Unique feature of this college is starting MDS Courses in Oral Medicine and Radiology and Orthodontics in the state of Punjab. This speaks about the progress and facilities available in the college. This has been possible with the total dedication of the management and staff of the college.

This is the only college in the State of Punjab which has the distinction of starting Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist courses with 20 seats in each course in 2005. The institute has achieved distinction of being one of the best institutes in the country in regard to land, building, infrastructure, equipment and above all the best senior teaching faculty mostly from well established Dental and Medical colleges of Punjab. The college is housed in about 17 acres of land and has a beautiful four storied building having covered area of over 1.50 Lac Sq. Ft. located on Patiala-Bathinda Road, Sunam (Pb.) in lush green& peaceful surroundings. More than 70000Sq. area has been added for the college to increase the scope of departments. Two new blocks in both the hostels has been constructed, to accommodate more number of students and to provide individual rooms with attached bathrooms and small kitchnet to MDS students.

The Campus has been provided with wi-fi system and students are being given compulsory training. The teachers, staff and students have easy access to internet facilities. The college has modern E-Library, E-Journals with seating capacity for over 150 undergraduate students, 50 Post graduate students and teaching faculty members. The library has over 3400 books and is subscribing over 50 National and International Journals. The library also has latest Audio Visual Aids like over head projectors, LCD projectors, slide projectors, Photostat machine and computers with internet Broadband facilities. The institute has Administrative Block, separate OPDs for different dental departments, State of Art operation theatre with modern facilities, Dental indoor wards for
post operative care of Maxillofacial surgery cases, a big auditorium, independent water works, two big generators for 24 hours uninterrupted power supply, a canteen, STD-PCO, full fledged security setup and well manned Maintenance dept. The institute is equipped with all kinds of latest equipments for providing proper care to the patients and training to the students. A mobile dental van is well equipped with Dental Unit, Chair and Generator to provide dental care in villages through free dental camps.

Most of the Dental treatments like tooth extraction, scaling and fillings are done totally free. During mega camps all the treatments including X-ray, minor/major operations, complete dentures, RCTs, and even orthodontic treatments are done free or at subsidized cost. The institute has adopted almost all the schools in 15k.m. radius under FREE SCHOOL DENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME. The college also has one fully air-conditioned satellite clinic at District head quarter Sangrur named Vidya Sagar Bansal Memorial Dental Clinic. The institute is planning to set up another 6 more satellite clinics within 10 to 15 k.m. radius of college. The institution is running evening OPD also where senior faculty is available. For teaching Clinical Medicine and Surgery, college has its own 100 Bedded general hospital named Bhagwan Dass Arora Memorial Hospital in the college campus and fully developed independent departments of Anatomy with dissection hall and museum,
Physiology, bio-Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesia.

The Institute has become a modern and unique place capable of imparting the best dental education and to produce an integrated and excellent dental surgeon. It strives to produce the best doctors with emphasis on their growth into an integrated personality. Students who have passed out from this college are bringing laurels to the institution by their excellent work and conduct. A Large number of students from this College have joined post graduate courses (MDS) after passing various Common Entrance Tests. There are separate Hostel for boys and girls to house 150 boys and 360 girls. Both the hostels have inbuilt mess, water filters and coolers, water heating system, telephone facility, indoor games, T. V. room, common room, residences of Hostel Warden and Hostel Superintendent and well maintained lawns. There is also a well maintained play ground with the facility of large number of outdoor games. The two hostels have guesthouses with ten fully air conditioned rooms for guests and other visitors. There are many staff quarters for housing sufficient numbers of staff members. New staff colony has been constructed, which has 18 flats with three bed rooms each. The present management of Bhagwan Dass Arora Charitable Trust, Sunam running this college consists of Sh. Ashok Bansal (Advocate), Chairman/Trustee, Dr. Vikram Sharma, Managing Director/Trustee, Sh. Kamal Arora, Director/Trustee, Sh. Aman Arora, Director/Trustee, who are all well reputed persons of this area and expert in their respective fields. The institute has come to the present status due to untiring hard work and sincere efforts of the management, Director-Principal, Prof. Dr. R. L. Jain, MDS, teaching staff, nonteaching staff, employees and also the cooperation of students and their parents. It is a matter of great pride that the college have started Post Graduate programme (MDS) in 7 specialties and the first final examination has already bean conducted and recognition of MDS degree is in process. Two batches of Diploma Courses viz. Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist have already passed out. Like previous years,the students of this college are getting admission on merit in MDS Courses all over country.

Prevention of Ragging
Ragging of the first year students particularly when they are admitted afresh to this institute is illegal and completely forbidden. It is punishable with fine, or even expulsion from college and also prosecution. Ragging is defined amongst others as, Display of disorderly conduct, an act of causing physical and psychological harm or causing apprehension or fear or shame or embarrasment. The definition also includes, Teasing, abusing, threatning, playing practical jokes or asking students to perform something the student in ordinary course would not do. It further includes causing injury, degrading, humilating a fellow student and causing distress of mind or spirit.

Punjab Science Congress begins

The 9th Punjab Science Congress today began with fanfare at Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute here. Dr Ramamurthi Rallapalli, president of the Indian Science Congress Association, inaugurated the Congress lamp. Delegates from various parts of the state are taking part in this congress.

In the inaugural session on behalf of the Punjab Academy of Sciences, Dr Rallapalli awarded fellowships to Dr D.S. Brar, Senior Scientist, Philippines; Mr S.S. Boparai, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala; Dr Anil Kohli, president of the Dental Council of India; Dr H.S. Sohi, internationally renowned mycologist, Solan; and Dr S.S. Gosal, senior biotechnologist, PAU, Ludhiana. Besides, Dr Rallapalli also honoured Dr (Col) C.S. Pant, former president of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, with Bhagwan Dass Arora Memorial Oration Award. All of them were honoured with medals, citations and mementos.

Dr Vikram Sharma, a Director and trustee of the research institute, announced that post-graduate courses would be started in the college soon. He also thanked the Punjab Academy of Sciences to extend great honour to the college to organise the 9th Punjab Science Congress here.


Dental college gets permission to admit students

The Central Government has approved the renewal of permission to four year BDS course for admitting the fourth batch of students during academic session 2001-2002 with 60 admissions at Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute, Sunam.

Giving this information here yesterday, Mr Ashok Bansal, Chairman of the Bhagwan Dass Arora Charitable Trust, which runs the college, said this had been conveyed in a communique to the Principal of the college by Mr S.K. Rao, Director, Union ministry of Health and Family Welfare.



Punjab Science Congress concludes

The ninth Punjab Science Congress, organised by the Punjab Academy of Sciences, concluded at Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute at Sunam today. Dr Vikram Sharma, director and trustee of the Dental College, Sunam presided over the valedictory function.

Over 200 delegates from different parts of the state participated in the Congress. More than 150 research papers, pertaining to different systems of science, were presented. A poster presentation contest was also held.

Tamanana Kanchan Banga, D.H. Singh, H.S. Khurana, B. Pandey and Ruchika Garg were honoured with Young Scientists Awards.

Dr D.S. Brar, a senior scientist from the Philippines, Mr S.S. Boparai, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr Anil Kohli, president, Dental Council of India, Dr H.S. Sohi, internationally renowned mycologist, Solan and Dr S.S. Gosal, senior biotechnologist, PAU, Ludhiana, were awarded with fellowships on behalf of the Punjab Academy of Sciences. Dr C.S. Pant, former president of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, was honoured with Bhagwan Dass Arora Memorial Oration Award.




Recounselling for dental colleges on

Following the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for recounselling of candidates for admission in the BDS courses in various government and private dental colleges in the state, The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFHUS), Faridkot selected 290 aspirants of the general category at the two-day interviews which ended here today.

More than 600 candidates appeared in the interviews for seats in Government Dental College Amritsar, Government Dental College, Patiala, Guru Ram Dass College, Amritsar, Guru Nanak Dev Dental College, Sunam, Dashmesh Institute of Research and Dental Sciences, Faridkot, BJS Dental College, Ludhiana, Laxmi Bai Dental College, Patiala, Desh Bhagat Dental College, Muktsar, and National Dental College, Dera Bassi. Dr A.S. Gill, Chairman of the selection committee, clarified that the students who were earlier selected in the four-day counselling from September 10 last year and had again come on the selection map would not have to pay any admission charges and their study period would be considered from the last date of the admission. If any of them was allocated a seat to some other college, his or her related documents will be transferred to the respective institution.

Dr Gill stated that the 90 candidates who were on merit but could not be selected in September on some technical ground had also been adjusted. The study period of these students will strictly be considered from the admission date.

Interviews of the reserve category of 130 aspirants will be held tomorrow on the university campus.



Punjab Science Congress from Feb 7

The 9th Punjab Science Congress (PSC) will be organised by the Punjab Academy of Sciences from February 7 to February 9 at Guru Nanak Dev Dental College and Research Institute at Sunam, about 13 km from here.

Giving this information today, Dr Vinod Kapoor, organising secretary of the PSC, said Dr Ramamurthi Rallapalli, General President of the Indian Science Congress Association, would inaugurate the PSC while Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Deputy Chief Minister, Punjab, would preside over the inaugural function.
