Protest against honorary degrees by Berhampur University

BERHAMPUR: Several former student leaders, senior advocates and political leaders strongly protested on Monday honorary degrees proposed to be conferred on some persons by Berhampur University in the convocation to be held on Wednesday. They decided to hold a protest dharna in the town on the convocation day.
Several people named did not deserve to get the honorary degrees from the university, the protesters said. Besides, the university has ignored persons from southern Odisha, who had contribution towards the establishment of the university, they added.

The protesters held a meeting to highlight the issue under the banner of the Citizens Forum here, presided over by senior advocate and convener of the forum Sudhansu Pati.
Three members of Parliament, including leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, leading advocate Iqbal Chagla, woman activists V Mohini Giri, member of Planning Commission Syed A S Hameed, MPs from Odisha -- Sidhant Mohapatra (Berhampur) and Pinaki Mishra (Puri), sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik, Sambad editor Soumya Ranjan Patnaik and ardent devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba, Chandrabhanu Satapathy are some of the persons selected by the university for the honorary Doctor in Law (Ll.D) degree. The university also selected cardiologist Kabi Prasad Mishra for an honorary D.Ss degree.

We are very surprised to see the names of the persons to be conferred with the honorary degree by the university. We must be united in protest and hold a parallel convocation on the same day, said former students union president of MKCG Medical College, Subash Sahu.

Some of the names selected by the university for the honorary degrees are not known to many people and they do not deserve the honour, said Santosh Mohapatra, also a former student leader. This is the time to be united and to protest against the decision, stressed Arjuna Sahu, president of Ganjam district retired government employees association.
