IntroductionDoctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya was established on 18th July 1946 by the eminent scholar, educationist, and famous lawer Sir Dr. Harisingh Gour. He donated most his life-time savings worth Rs. Two Crores for the establishment of this temple of higher learning in the educationally and economically very backward region of Bundelkhand at Sagar. At that time, this was the 18th University of India and now it is oldest and the biggest University of Madhya Pradesh. The University may be regarded as the unique example of contribution made by a single person.
Dr. Gour had a dream to set up a centre of higher learning at the rural background of Sagar with the aim of developing it to attain academic excellence at par with pioneering universities of India as well as Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He had a vision to develop this University as a premier educational centre in the field of teaching and research. He had a very rich experience of the University system as he had already served as the founder Vice-Chancellor of University of Delhi and University of Nagpur. Apart from being a great educationist, Dr. Gour was a great patriot and philanthropist, eminent jurist, noble literary man who made significant and memorable creative contribution, well recognised by the legal and literary world.
The University of Saugar was rechristened as Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February 1983 by the State Legislature. The University has now attained the position of a fully developed institution imparting higher education and has earned its name and fame for its contribution in the field of teaching and research in the country. The University is situated 5 km. east of Sagar City and its campus is spread on 830.3 hectares on the finest picturesque hill top. It has presently 42 university teaching departments working under 10 faculties.
Every year, about 4000 students are seeking admissions in various undergraduate and post-graduate courses, being run by these university teaching departments at Sagar. In addition to this, there are about 110 affiliated colleges, covering six revenue districts of M.P. The University has many huge and attractive buildings with excellent basic amenities, accommodating the teaching departments. There are four hostels for boys and one hostel for girls in the University campus. Well equipped University Medical Centre, University Press, State Bank of India branch, Post Office, Employment and Guidance Bureau, Canteens and other auxiliary services are also available in the University Campus.
The University Central Library is the biggest library in the State, having more than three lacs of books and more than 100 research journals and periodicals being subscribed. About 26 teaching departments are also maintaining their own departmental library. Among the University teaching departments, many of them have made significant contributions and have achieved excellence. They have been well recognised nationally and internationally particularly, the Department of Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology and Forensic Science, Botany, Anthropology, Geography, Micro Biology and Bio-technology, Ancient Indian History & Archaeology, Business Management and Computer Science and Application have innovative teaching programmes and are attracting a large number of students form all parts of the country. The Institute of Distance Education of the University is conducting a good number of modern, conventional and job oriented courses on correspondence basis. Every year more than 600 students are seeking admissions in these courses from all over the country.
Besides these teaching departments, the University has a centre of IGNOU, AVRC, Central Instrumentation Laboratory, Shrimant B.S. Jain Centre for Research and Education, Population Research Centre (set up by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India), Muktibodh Peeth (created by M.P. Government) NCC and NSS wings, Botanical Garden, Archaeological Museum, etc. It is worth mentioning that the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Banglore has awarded Four Star Status to this University after taking into consideration its academic achievements and performance.

Apart from being a great jurist and legal luminary par excellence, he was a great Patriot, Philanthropist, Educationist and Social Reformer. He was the first Vice-Chancellor of Nagpur University (1936-38). He also held the vice-chancellorship of the University of Delhi (1925). Dr. Gour was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the University of Saugar. The Govt. of India honoured his memory by issuing a commemorative postage stamp in 1976. The Jawaharlal Nehru Library of the University has more than 3,10,000 books. As many as 26 departments have their own departmental libraries. Apart from conventional degree, post graduate and research courses, Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology & Forensic Science, Anthropology, Performing Arts, Journalism & Mass Communication, Adult Education, Electronics, Business Management, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Computer Applications are some of the special subjects, which attract a large number of students from the four corners of the country. The Institute of Distance Education of the University runs various self-finance, Correspondence Courses such as in M.Lib.Sc., B.Lib., MC(J), BJ (C), PG Diploma in Environmental Marketing and Personnel Management, PG Diploma in Criminology and Police Administration .
The University has a centre of Indira Gandhi Open University, Audiovisual Research Centre, Central Instrumentation Laboratory, Shrimant B.S. Jain Centre for Research and Education in Psychology and Population Research Centre created by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India . Muktibodh Peetha in the Department of Hindi has been created by the Govt. of M.P. The Botanical Survey of India has considered the Botanical Gardens of the University as the richest amongst those of Indian Universities. Madhya Bharati, the research journal of the University and the Bulletin of the Botanical Society of the University are internationally abstracted. The research journals from the Dept. of Sanskrit Sagarika and Natyam have pride of place amongst the indological journals of the country. "Isuri" the journal from the Bundeli Peeth of Hindi Dept. is a perennial source of Bundelkhandi art and culture. The discovery of an impression Edicaranfossil Spriggina by the Applied Geology Department has created much interest internationally. The NAAC appointed by UGC has awarded 'A' Grade re-accreditation to this University.

HistoryDoctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, originally known as University of Saugar, was established on 18th July 1946 by Dr. Harisingh Gour by the savings of his lifetime. Sir Hari Singh Gour, who was born on Nov 26, 1870 and died on Dec 25, 1949, was a great patriot, philanthropist, educationist and social reformer. To honour him, the State Legislature renamed the University of Saugar as Doctor Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February 1983.
Vice ChancellorsVice Chancellors like Shri Hari Singh Gour, Prof. R.P. Tripathi, Pandit D.P. Mishra, Justice G.P. Bhatt, Prof. M.P. Sharma, Prof. W.D. West, Prof. Bhagirath Mishra, Prof. T.S. More than 70,000 regular and private students appeared in its annual examination in 2002. The University achievements by way of contribution to research are noteworthy. It has awarded more than 3,000 Ph.D, 4 D.Sc, and 37 D.Litt. Degrees so far.
Several alumni of the University have brought great glory to it by distinguishing themselves in their chosen fields both within and outside the country. 26 of its students and teachers have been Vice Chancellors of different Indian Universities. A matter of even greater satisfaction is that the University has brought the light of knowledge into millions of homes in the villages and areas around Sagar, thus partly fulfilling the objectives of its establishment. The University is developing in a congenial peaceful disciplined and enthusiastic atmosphere. The students and teachers of the University are ever conscious of the burden of responsibility placed on them by the dreams of a great visionary who had kindled "the light that never fails."

Dr Harisingh Gour University also has the Institute of Distance Education that runs various self-financed Correspondence Courses such as M Lib Sc, B Lib, MC(J), BJ (C), PG Diploma in Environmental Marketing and Personnel Management, PG Diploma in Criminology and Police Administration .
Along with basic amenities like STD booth, Employment and Guidance Bureau, University Hospital, University Press, canteens and a shopping complex, the University has approximately five Hostels in the Campus. Students pursuing regular courses from the University, teaching departments and Research scholars are given admission in the Hostel. A Kitchen and dining room is also provided in every hostel. A Branch of the State Bank of India and Post-office functions within the periphery ot the University Campus. To facilitate the girl students the University has a Bus Service from and to the Sagar city. Railway Concession is available for the students who want to commute through the railways.
