About Us
We are proud to state that as per the directions given by Mahatma Gandhi during the Indian National Congress session held at Nagpur in 1920, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, as an education a memorial of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, 'the father of Indian unrest' and an advocate of National Education. The establishment of the Vidyapeeth was aimed towards imparting National Education conceived by Lokmanya Tilak in his four-fold formula (other three were Swaraj, Swadeshi and Boycott).

Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth is known at the national level for its unique identity for the realization of the ideals of imparting national education and igniting patriotic sentiments amongst the youths during the pre-independence era. The Vidyapeeth had the required structure right from its inception with all its constituents, namely, the Board of Management, the Academic Council, Planning and Monitoring Board, Faculties, Finance Committee etc. along with the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar as executive heads.

Prominent persons having national recognition such as Shri. Yashvantrao Chavan and Shri. Shankarrao Chavan, (both former Union Home Ministers), and Shri. Shivraj Patil-Chakurkar (the present Union Home Minister) have been the Chancellor of the University in the past. Presently, Shri. Sushilkumar Shinde, Union Power Minister holds the position.

Several eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Zakir Husain, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and others during their visit to the University campus have appreciated its uniqueness, culture and research work.

The teaching and research work carried out by the Departments of Sanskrit, Ayurveda and Social Sciences are well acclaimed. The concept of non - formal education was first discussed at the national level in the year 1985. Eminent scholars associated with the University gave a serious thought to the promotion of non-formal education and thus in 1985 itself the Department of Distance Education (initially known as Mukta Vidya Kendra) came into being.

The prime necessity of a Vidyapeeth is a good library with a balanced collection, which caters to the needs of the students, Vidyapeeth faculties and can promote study and research.

The Vidyapeeth library possesses a sizeable collection of 91000 books and non-book reading material in subjects including Social Sciences, Sanskrit Literature, Philosophy, Religion, Indology, Ayurveda, Management, Biotechnology, Education, Library Science, and Engineering and provides services to all the courses of this Vidyapeeth.

The Collection development is also quite consistent with the objective of this Vidyapeeth. Book acquisition is done as per the recommendations of the teachers and as per the department wise allocations of the Library Committee. The library is in receipt of grants worth Rs.9 lacs in 7th plan, Rs.10 lacs in 8th plan, Rs. 25 lacs in 9th and Rs.32 lacs in10 th plan. Books are also added by way of donations, gifts and grants.

Rare Books and Manuscripts' Collection :
R are books and manuscripts' collection may be said to be a special feature of this library. Well known Sanskritists and learned professors have donated their personal collections to the library, with the faith that the books and manuscripts would certainly help in enhancing the knowledge of learners and researchers. Some of the important and noteworthy collections are mentioned below-

Setu Madhavrao Pagdi Collection.

Pandit Babrekar Shastri Manuscripts' Collection.

V.V.Gokhale Collection of Tibetan Manuscripts.

Prof. C.G.Kashikar Collection.

Prof. A.R.Kulkarni Collection.

Kesari Collection.

C.V.Mone Collection.

P.R.Kelkar Collection.

Manuscripts' Preservation
reservation of Manuscripts is as important as the acquisition work. National Archives provides financial assistance to Universities and Institutions after submitting a scheme for financial assistance for the preservation work.

In 1988-89 financial assistance of Rs. 60000/- was received from the National Archives for the microfilming of forty thousand leaves.

In 1992, the Librarian Smt. R. P. Deshmukh submitted a scheme of preservation to the National Archives. The Archives granted Rs. 75,000/- for buying the storage cabinets, preservation material and publication of the manuscripts' catalogue.

The manuscripts' catalogue namely 'Descriptive Catalogue of Manuscripts in the collection of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth Library, Volume 1- Sanskrit Manuscripts' was published in the year 1998.

Attempts at Automation
The libraries are meeting the challenges of ever-increasing volume of information and decreasing abilities of libraries for comprehensive acquisition of documents. The demands of the users are also becoming multifaceted and very complex day by day.

Library is an age-old system and the staff is surrounded by various organizational and administrative problems. In this present context, there is a need to study the existing staff potential and prepare them for handling Automation and Networking.

Demise of self sufficiency, rising cost of reading materials, increased research and teaching demands, growth of scholarly journals all these factors necessitate sharing of resources among libraries. Networking is one way of achieving the goal of resource sharing. Technology is revolutionising library automation and networking of libraries.

INFLIBNET is one of the major programmes of UGC initiated towards automation and networking of libraries in the country.

Library Science Courses :
The Vidyapeeth is known for promoting regional language as a medium of instruction. The Library Science courses run by the statutory universities of Maharashtra are in English medium. Nowhere was there any provision of teaching through Marathi medium; and hence the Vidyapeeth decided to introduce a graduate course in Library and Information Science in 1984.

This decision of the Vidyapeeth was quite consistent with the declared policy of the State Government i.e. 'promotion of the regional language'. Since then the Library Science School is getting growing response from the urban and the rural Maharashtra.

The past students of this faculty are now working as library professionals in various academic, special and public libraries of India.

A master's degree course in Library and Information Science has also been launched in the regional language from the academic year of 2002, as there was a pressing demand from the Library Science graduates of this Vidyapeeth.
Activities:

Various activities of these courses give an opportunity to the students to interact with other academic community. Study visits and study tours are arranged to various academic , special, public libraries of the country. Orientation is provided to the students during these study visits.

One month's compulsory library training may be said to be a special feature of this course. It is expected from a student to acquire technical skills useful for managing a library. It also gives an opportunity for the librarian and the library science teachers to have an interaction with the student community.

The application of computer and communication technologies in the management of library and information system, would certainly modernize the present library scenario. For that purpose a systematic orientation to library science students is essential. Knowing this fact, the Vidyapeeth has already introduced the subject viz. 'Information Technology Applications' at B.Lib.I Sc. & M.Lib.I Sc. degree levels with special emphasis on practical. From acquisition to indexing and from storage to retrieval, information technology is stretching its hold. The Library school of the Vidyapeeth is trying its best to reflect the emergence of technology in its courses.

Manuscripts' collection and oriental literature is an additional special feature of this Library. 'Cataloguing of Manuscripts' is a specialized branch of 'Library Cataloguing' and requires special training. It is proposed to organize an intensive course in 'Preservation and Cataloguing of Manuscripts'. The Vidyapeeth is sure that such intensive courses will help the students in learning new skills and techniques.

We are proud to state that as per the directions given by Mahatma Gandhi during the Indian National Congress session held at Nagpur in 1920, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, as an educational memorial of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, 'the Father of Indian Unrest' and an advocate of National Education. The establishment of the Vidyapeeth was aimed towards imparting National Education conceived by Lokmanya Tilak in his four-fold formula (other three were Swaraj, Swadeshi and Boycott).

Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth is known at the national level for its unique identity for the realization of the ideal of imparting national education and igniting patriotic sentiments amongst the youths during the pre-independence era.The Vidyapeeth had the required structure right from its inception with all its constituents, namely, the Board of Management, the Academic Council, Planning and Monitoring Board, Faculties, Finance Committee etc. along with the Chancellor,Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar as executive heads.

Prominent persons having national recognition such as Shri. Yashvantrao Chavan, Shri. Shankarrao Chavan, and Shri. Shivraj Patil-Chakurkar (all three former Union Home Ministers), have been the Chancellor of the Vidyapeeth in the past. Presently, Shri. Sushilkumar Shinde, Union Power Minister holds the position.

Several eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Zakir Husain, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and others during their visit to the Vidyapeeth campus have appreciated its uniqueness, culture and research work.

The teaching and research work carried out by the Departments of Sanskrit, Ayurveda and Social Sciences are well acclaimed. The concept of non - formal education was first discussed at the national level in the year 1985. Eminent scholars associated with the Vidyapeeth gave a serious thought to the promotion of non-formal education and thus in 1985 itself the Department of Distance Education (initially known as Mukta Vidya Kendra) came into being.

Status of a Deemed University -
The tremendous work done in the fields of Sanskrit , Ayurveda, Social Sciences and Distance Education was taken into account by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and on its recommendation the Central Government awarded the status of a "Deemed to be University" to Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth in the year 1987. The award of the Deemed University status accorded the Vidyapeeth recognition at the national level.

Recent Developments -
Till the academic year 2003-04,Vidyapeeth had a few programs on offer. However, the Vidyapeeth is fortunate to have Lokmanya Tilak's great grandson Dr. Deepak J. Tilak as the Vidyapeeth Vice-Chancellor since June 2004. Since then, the Vidyapeeth as a whole has transformed itself to face the challenges put forth by the fast changing world.

The department of Distance Education has taken a great leap ahead with the launch of several programmes. This also marked the beginning of the growth of the Vidyapeeth within the State by means of establishing study center network. The initiative taken in this regard by Dr. Deepak J. Tilak encouraged other departments as well to look forward and re-oriented themselves with new perspectives.

The re-orientation has resulted for the Vidyapeeth to enter into the field of Modern Sciences and Professional Skills. In addition to the programs that cherish our Indian heritage the Vidyapeeth has also launched several courses in the fields of Management, Engineering, Bio-technology , Computer Sciences, Animation, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Journalism, Mass- Media, Education and so on. All the degrees awarded by the Vidyapeeth are as per the norms and guidelines of UGC, DEC and NCTE.

With the well-equipped infra-structure, facilities of Information -Communication Technology and with a team of dedicated staff the Vidyapeeth is all geared up to take the challenges of globalization. Almost all the programs offered under the Distance Mode are also available on Regular/Full time basis under the Faculty of Modern Sciences and Professional Skills.

The Vidyapeeth also offers value-added programs like Six-Sigma, Soft-Skills, CAD-CAM-CAE to all in - campus students in order to improve their personality and skills. Also available are facilities like Language Lab, ITC etc. Finally, to ensure appropriate placement for the students, the Vidyapeeth has also established a Placement Cell.

The Vidyapeeth is committed to maximize the knowledge and skills of students, thus making them competent to meet global challenges. The ethics of value-based education system are strictly followed in the Vidyapeeth to promote good character building among the young generation .

On behalf of the Vidyapeeth I welcome all the students and look forward to them to serve the nation for fulfilling Lokmanya's dream of building a strong and modern India.
