Padmashree Dr D Y Patil University was established on 20th July 2002 through a vide notification issued by University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The University was formed by amalgamating the group of Dr. D.Y. Patil institutes. Since its inception Padmashree Dr D Y Patil Group of Institutions has been imparting world class education and continues to be a reputed University having a knowledge centre that generates and supports exceptional levels of opportunity and initiative.
Padmashree Dr D Y Patil University, headquartered in Navi Mumbai, was established to add quality to all spheres of higher learning in general and health services in particular. The University's objective is to impart and disseminate knowledge and to provide facilities for research and development in the emerging areas of Health Sciences, Science and Technology, Business Management, Hospitality Management, Law, Liberal Education, Teacher's Education, Sports etc. Its medical college (Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College) has been awarded an ISO 9001:2000 certification from the Joint Accreditation System of Australia (JAS-ANZ).

There is a Medical College (Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College) that provides facilities for M.B.B.S. and post-graduate studies in medical stream. The Institute of Ayurved and Researchoffers BAMS (Ayurvedacharya - Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) degree (51/2 years duration). The Institute of Physiotherapy offers physiotherapy courses that involve problem-based learning, and analyze various dysfunctions incorporating institutional management as well as community-based rehabilitation. Institute for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics offers B Tech and M Tech courses. Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Studies offers B.Sc. Hospitality and Tourism Studies degree program.
