Gondwana University to start functioning from next session: VC

CHANDRAPUR: The newly-formed Gondwana University is all set to start its academic functioning from the year 2012-13. While the university has restructured all the syllabi, it has also adopted semester pattern for all the diploma, degree and post graduate degree courses having tenure of more than one year.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has given its approval to Gondwana University. The fresh students admitted into first year for any course in its 177 affiliated colleges will belong to Gondwana University. However, Nagpur University will conduct exams for existing students progressively for next two or three years until they complete their degree or diploma courses, said vice-chancellor Vijay Ainchwar.

Interacting with reporters on Saturday, he claimed that the university has included the latest topics in syllabus of various studies and has also opted for Credit Grade System (CGS) for evaluation. The new University is even going to publish language textbooks prescribed in the syllabus. While semester system will help raise students attendance and their interaction with lecturers, the CGS will certainly strengthen students position when they go out for higher studies or employment. Gondwana university will be the only university after Mumbai in Maharashtra to adopt semester pattern right from first year for all its courses, he said.

He said that the university is going to offer postgraduate degree course of English, Social Science, History, MCom and MSc (Maths) for this academic year. However, the university has applied for 12 new postgraduate courses including MSc in Computer Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry, MCA, MA Geology, Economics and Political Science, MCM and MEd with the government, he added. University has focused on making its syllabus employment oriented. Attempts are underway to make tie-ups with the industrial houses, so that companies could directly accommodate our student from campus, he said.

Ainchwar said that in all 177 colleges, including five engineering colleges, three MBA, two pharmacy and a law college, are affiliated to Gondwana University. Apart from this 107 application have been submitted for approval of new colleges, classes or subjects. Out of this, university has approved 80 applications, including 59 applications of new colleges and forwarded them the government. New colleges will certainly help in strengthening roots of education in rural area, he said.

He claimed that presently university is functioning from erstwhile sub-center of RTM Nagpur university, which has been transferred to Gondwana university by government. However, we have identified 350 acres of plot in Gadchiroli for university, which presently have Zudpi jungle over it. A master plan worth Rs 446 crore, along with necessary NOCs from forest and revenue departments and local municipal council, has been forwarded to government for approval. Apart from this a committee has been formed to prepare a prospective plan of the university for the next five years, Anichwar said.

Senior educationist and former minister of state for finance Shantaram Potdukhe has suggested vice-chancellor Ainchwar to seek a medical college the university and prepare a prospective plan to bring industries to backward Gadchiroli district on the occasion. Ainchwar assured to seek medical college and take efforts for brining cottage industries based on forest produce to Gadchiroli.
