Youth theme promises exciting fare at Purushottam Karandak

Pune: The stage is set for the two-day final round of the annual inter-collegiate one-act play competition, Purushottam Karandak, in which nine city colleges would vie for the top honours. The competition, beginning September 17, is known for giving a platform to amateur actors, some of whom have become outstanding thespians, directors and playwrights. The event is organised by the Maharashtriya Kalopasak. The contest will be held at Bharat Natya Mandir from 9 pm to midnight.

Fifty-one colleges took part in the preliminary round. The results of the final will be declared on Sunday night. College campuses are abuzz with excitement, as their teams are busy rehearsing their plays. This year, most of the plays revolve around youth-related subjects and issues like social networking sites, reality shows, love and relationships. Marathwada Mitra Mandals College of Commerce team is staging Logging Out, which deals with social networking sites. The director of the play, Abhijeet Mokate, said it deals with how youth have got entangled with the virtual world created by social networking sites.

The team from MIT College of Engineering would be staging Serial Killers. According to the team, the play has nothing to do with television serials, but explores a serious and sensitive issue. However, it is not willing to share details of the play at this juncture. Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology (VIIT) Engineering Colleges play, Emotional Locha, highlights the emotional dilemmas of youngsters through a reality show. A member of the performing team, Mahesh Darda, said the theme is based on youth.

Vadgaon Budruk-based Sinhgad College of Engineerings Hey There Delayla Hu talks about live-in relationships. Pranav Bhagwat, student representative said the title of the play is inspired by an English song and the play explores immature relationships and tiffs between lovers.

College of Engineering, Pune, is staging Checkmate. The director of the play, Eeshan Bhalerao, said the actors have put in great efforts for a stupendous show.

Pune girl devises watering system

Pune: If you like nurturing plants, but your urban lifestyle doesnt give you enough time to water them regularly, then Deepika Chordia might have a solution for you.

Deepika, a British Council Climate Champion-2010, has devised an intelligent way to water plants. The young girl, who doesnt believe in the present education system, gave up the idea of pursuing a formal degree course after completing standard XII.

I feel that the urban lifestyle gives us very less time to pursue gardening. Even if we have plants, no one has the time to look after them. So we came up with the concept of water smart pots (WSP), which work on the principle of capillary action, said Deepika.

She thoroughly studied the drawbacks in the current system where plants are watered daily, which causes loss of air spaces due to over-watering and reduces the number of earthworms and soil-friendly bacteria. The deterioration of soil in turn led to ill health of the plant. Her brother Gaurav, who is pursuing product designing at MIT College, helped her design the pot.Explaining the concept, Deepika said, Basically there are two compartments in the pot. The lower one is filled with water and upper one with mud. One can fill water in the lower compartment with a pipe.

A small plastic flask filled with mud is placed between the two compartments. The flask, which has slits, absorbs water from the lower compartment and passes it on to the upper compartment, where the roots of the plants are, adds Gaurav.Elaborating the advantages of the WSP, Deepika said, We have seen the marvellous growth of saplings and vegetables in these pots. We have recorded water savings up to almost 75%. Time required for watering and maintaining the plant is also reduced by 80%.

Deepika said that her parents, Dr Pravin and Jayashri Chordia, have supported them in their endeavour. We started with this concept a month ago and the response has been good as we have sold 250 pots so far, said Deepika.

With a sharp rise in our carbon footprint we are heading towards global warming and other ecological problems. Growing ones own vegetable will help society to reduce its carbon footprint. More productive gardening leads to more and more people getting interested in it, she said.

For more information on the WSPs, contact Deepika Chordia on watersmart1@yahoo.in.
