Message of Principal Dr. L.K. Kshirsagar
Engineering is the science of applying scientific concepts for improving quality of life. It essentially deals with application of technology and balances the realm of pure knowledge and its use. That is why, here, ideas matter as much as knowledge. At MIT, we take our students through both these realms. While on one hand, we ensure clarity of the basic concepts of science, on the other hand we encourage students to look at practical needs from different angles and find innovative and creative solutions.

This amalgamation of the creative and the real is reflected in our pedagogy too. Without compromising the extent and depth of learning, our faculty employs creative methods to make studying an exciting experience.

Hearing-impaired boy tides over odds

Pune: When 22-year-old Rohan Kulkarni appeared for his viva during his final semester of electronics engineering at the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) College of Engineering, Pune, the external examiners, could not believe that he was congenitally hearing impaired.

The project was not an easy one to explain. Rohan and his two classmates had developed a system by applying the Retinex algorithm to explain how a camera can actually manage to see in the dark like a human being.
Retinex means Retina+cortex that are present in the human eye.

Rohan was chosen to explain the project on behalf of his team and he did it in style. Yet another example of what the hearing impaired can achieve with timely support and guidance.Rohans impairment was detected when he was two years old and was given hearing aids at age three.

Later, Rohan was coached in speech and language therapy by city-based speech therapist Alka Hudlikar.Rohan also went to a normal school right from the beginning. His mother Deepa said, He was academically bright and because he knew how to communicate using language, it became easier for him as compared to other hearing impaired children.

Deepa, however, emphasised the need for a good pair of hearing aids.
It is a wrong assumption, that hearing aids are painful. One needs to get the right aid with the help of a doctor. Besides, the parents need to have patience. We have to give them at least six months after putting the aid before they start uttering syllables, she said.Rohan is keen to pursue an MTech. At his college farewell party, his teachers asked him narrate his whole story.
Recalling the event, Rohan said, They wanted to know how I had studied at a normal school and had normal friends and how I managed my studies. I told them that determination, hard work, patience and proper guidance from parents and teachers made it possible.

Rohans father, Sunil Kulkarni felt that it is important to see that the child does not develop an inferiority complex.

Rohan was properly guided at home to take questions from friends about hearing aids positively. He chose to opt for the science stream after standard X. We were worried but he did well in standard XII and maintained the graph even later, Sunil said.

MIT alumnus rings NASDAQ bell

Pune: In a rare honour, Pradeep Akkunoor, a 2003 alumnus of the Maharashtra Institute of Technologys (MIT) electronics and telecommunication engineering department, was invited for the prestigious NASDAQ stock exchange closing bell ceremony in New York on Friday.

Akkunoor was invited as part of an MBA student group from the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, which won the top honours at the Stu Clark Investment Competition in Winnipeg, Canada. This is an extraordinary moment of joy for me and I am thrilled to no end, Akkunoor told over the telephone. It is inspiring and electrifying to have the good fortune of being here, on ground zero, so to speak, Akkunoor said, adding they had landed in New York on a historic day, when Steve Jobs had resigned from Apple Inc.

Like millions and millions of people around the world, Im his fan too. His 2005 commencement speech is something everyone should read, he said. Just a few months ago, this group won the top prize at the mai Bangkok Business Challenge 2011, a prestigious international competition for MBA students.

As is the custom, on Friday the Nasdaq closing bell ceremony was broadcast on the giant screen of the Nasdaq stock exchange at Times Square, New York and shown live over the internet.

While prominent Indians such as investment tycoon, Motilal Oswal, film star Shah Rukh Khan, businessmen Azim Premji and NR Narayana Murthy are among those to have rung the Nasdaq bell, this honour is also given to students winning prestigious international competitions.A graduate in marketing and strategic management from the Sasin Institute, Akkunoors group, comprising four other members, won the top prize in the contest, the King of Thailands Award and $10,000. Their prize-winning business project revolved round Siam Organic — an export marketing company developing the worlds most nutritious and healthy specialty certified organic rice. Under the project, Siam Organic, supported by a fully integrated supply chain, would access consumers worldwide and develop one of the most premium branded organic rice strains coming out of Thailand.

The Bangkok Business Challenge was created in 2002 to encourage post-graduate students in business administration programmes across Thailand and Asia to become more entrepreneurial. The teams not only compete for the top award in the name of the Thai king, but also to win over $20,000 in prize money.
