About Us
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (VNIT), named after the great engineer, statesman & visionary of modern India and Bharat Ratna Awardee M. Visvesvaraya, was established in June 1960 by the Indian government in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra, with an aim of imparting excellent technical education at undergraduate level in the state. One of first six Regional Engineering Colleges set up by the central government originally in association with various state governments across the country; the institute has traversed a long path. Today the college besides offering engineering courses at undergraduate level offers technical education at post graduate level also. One can also take up research in various disciplines at the institute. Moreover, the institute has been conferred with a status of deemed university by Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) in 2002.The institute has autonomous Board of Governors who is representatives of the Central Government, State Government, Educational bodies like AICTE and UGC. Teaching Faculty, Industrialists, and Technologists also manage the institute.

The institute offers 8 under-graduate programs in Engineering, under-graduate program in Architecture in addition to 9 post-graduate programs in Engineering, and research programs in various engineering departments. Many of the departments are recognized as Quality Improvement Program Centres by the Government of India. All the programs are accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and as many as 9 of these have received the highest accolade of grade 'A'. The present student strength of the institute is around 1500 for under graduate courses, 200 for PG courses and around 50 for research programs.

Introduction
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, also referred to as NIT, Nagpur, (formerly known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), Nagpur) is one of the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established under the scheme sponsored by Government of India and the Maharashtra State Government & is also one of the Institutes of National Importance for India. The College was established in June 1960 and named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) was established in June, 1960 as a joint venture between the Central and Maharashtra Government. Formerly it was known as the Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It is one of the first six Regional Engineering colleges. It has now become a national institute of technology and has been granted the status of a 'Deemed University'. VNIT was named after the great engineer and visionary, Bharat Ratna Sir. M Visvesvaraya. Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology of Institute was started as a joint scheme of Indian Government and Government of Maharashtra as Visvesvaraya Regional Engineering College i.e. VRCE in June 1960. The institute was transformed into Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology and rewarded Deemed to be University status under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, on 26th June 2002. The Institute was founded in June 1960 and named after the eminent engineer, planner of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The institute is also known as NIT Nagpur. The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the first six regional engineering colleges founded on the project granted by Government of India and the Maharashtra state government. The college has been provided independence in economical and administrative subjects to get rapid development. An independent board of governors comprising personnel of the central government, state government, AICTE, UGC, teaching faculty, industrialists and technologists manages the institute. Currently, VNIT is an independent co-ed engineering college, with 11 graduate and 8 undergraduate programs. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech degrees, though the graduate students and postgraduate students get M.Tech and Ph.D.degrees. VNIT has an architecture school rewarding the B.Arch. and M.Arch degrees. The Govt. of India converted this Institute into National Institute of Technology and conferred the Deemed to be University status (under University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with effect from 26th June 2002. Before conversion, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering that was established in the year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Government of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The College was started in June 1960 by amalgamating the State Govt. Engineering College functioning at Nagpur since July 1956. In the meeting held in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College resolved to name it after an eminent engineer, planner, statesman of the Country Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The prime objective of establishing Regional Engineering Colleges was to impart quality technical education throughout the country and foster national integration.The College started functioning in 1960 from camp office in the premises of Govt. Polytechnic, Sadar,Nagpur and subsequently an area of about 214 acres was acquired to house an independent Regional Engineering College at present location.

The Institute was initially established as a joint venture of Indian Government and Government of Maharashtra as Visvesvaraya Regional Engineering College (VRCE) in June 1960. VRCE was converted into Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology and awarded Deemed to be University status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 by Department of Secondary & Higher Education on 26 June 2002. However as on 15 August 2007 VNIT and other NITs no longer hold this status as NITs have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Government of India under the NIT Act. VNIT has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to help achieve rapid development. An autonomous Board of Governors having representatives of the Central Government, State Government, AICTE, UGC, teaching faculty, industrialists and technologists manages the institute. The current Chairman of Board of Governors of VNIT is Shri S. S. Sohoni (former Secretary to the President of India).

Campus
The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology,is located in the western edge of the city. The railway station is approximately 8 km and the airport is approximately 15 km from the college gates. The three main entrances to the campus are the Main Gate(South Ambazari road), the Bajaj Nagar gate and the Yashwantnagar Gate.( The Main Gate is the only open till 18:00 hrs. while the Yashwantnagar gate is open till 2300 hrs. Due to its proximity to the Ambazari lake, the campus is extremely green and thus untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city. The nag nadi(river) canal(almost extinct) flows right next to the Yashwantnagar gate.

Infrastructure
The Institute has a campus of about 214 acres (866,000 m�) near Ambazari Lake. The distance of the campus from Nagpur Railway Station is 8 km. and 7 km. from Nagpur Airport. The campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in flora and fauna. All departments and laboratories are housed on the campus.

The Institute has 14 departments. All the departments are recognized as Quality Improvement Program Centers by the Government of India. The laboratories in various departments have extensive research and testing facilities. The VLSI Design Lab was set up in 1997 under SMDP (Special Manpower Development Program) in the field of VLSI.

There are seven Boys Hostels and two Girls Hostels. Each hostel is having well equipped entertainment, housekeeping, sports, mess and excellent internet facilities. Provision for residential accommodation for teaching and non teaching staff of the Institute is also available on the campus.

The library of the institute is 4 decades old and houses about a hundred thousand books. In addition to the existing library, a new digital library is being constructed which will have access to online journals and technology related websites. The complete campus is networked using fiber optic cables.

The campus has an Auditorium, Computer Center, Sporting Facilities, Hospital, Post & Telegraph Center, State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Canteen, coffee-shop, and a co-op store.

A decommissioned MiG-23 fighter aircraft has been installed recently inside the VNIT campus.

Chairman Profile
CHAIRMAN,VNIT,Nagpur:Shri S. S. Sohoni
Shri S. S. Sohoni was born on 9 Aug. 1946 at Kolhapur. He was educated at The Doon School, Dehra Dun, at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and later at the University of Economic Science, Bruno Leuschuer, Berlin.

After a brief teaching stint at St. Stephen's College where he taught History, Shri Sohoni entered the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1970 and was allotted to the Maharashtra cadre. Shri Sohoni worked in various capacities as Asst. Collector, Sub-Div. Magistrate, Dy. Managing Director of SICOM and concurrently served on the Boards of several Industrial units. It was during his tenure in Ahmednagar District that he was awarded the Govt. of Maharashtra 'Prashasti Patra' for his work during the great drought of 1972-74.

Shri Sohoni has dealt with various matters relating to security, national defence and heavy industries when he was with the Govt. of India from 1976-80. He was Collector and District Magistrate of Bhandara from 1980-82 and Administrator of the then newly constituted Municipal Corporation of Thane from 1982-84.

As Secretary to the Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Sohoni was thus, also, ex-officio Secretary to the Chancellor of all Universities in Maharashtra. He was Secretary to the Vice President of India from 1987-92 and thus, also, ex-officio Secretary to the Chancellor of many Central Universities. In the period 1992-95, Shri Sohoni worked as Addl. Secretary to the President of India and dealt with matters concerning the Constitutional functions of the President and his functions as Visitor of 22 Central Universities and the IITs. As Secretary to the President of India from 1995-97, Shri Sohoni was also ex-officio head of the Visitor's Secretariat. After working as Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha for a year, he was Advisor, National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution' (2000-02).

Shri Sohoni has traveled widely to all parts of the country and to various countries in Asia, Africa and America. He has written three books viz. 'Charkha and the Rose' (which is a study of aspects of the Gandhi - Nehru relationship), 'Badshah Khan - Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan' and 'Hymns to the Earth' that has a foreword by Mother Teresa. Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Govt. of India conferred on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status (under University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with effect from 26th June 2002. Subsequently, the Central Govt. by Act of Parliament (National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007)) declared VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National Importance along with all other NITs. The Act was brought into force from 15th August 2007.

Earlier, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was established in the year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The college was started in June 1960 by amalgamating the State Govt. Engineering College functioning at Nagpur since July 1956. CHAIRMAN Prof. S.K. Joshi
Prof. S.K. Joshi received his Ph.D. in Physics from Allahabad University in 1962. Joshis broad areas of interest are condensed matter and collision processes. His early research was in the study of phonons in metals and insulators. Later, he studied electronic states in disordered systems and electron correlation in narrow band solids. He has also worked on surface states and surface segregation. He conducted studies on excitation and ionization processes in atoms, ions, and molecules. His current research interests lie in strongly correlated electron systems, such as high temperature superconductors, and also in nanotechnology, especially electron transport in quantum dots and nanotubes.
He has supervised the Ph.D. thesis of twenty scholars and has published more than 190 research papers. He was Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee from 1967 to 1986. He was the Director of the National Physical Laboratory from 1986 to 1991. In 1991, he was appointed the Director General of the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. After retiring in 1995, he was awarded the Sarabhai Research Professorship in Physics. He currently works on condensed matter theory at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi.
He was awarded a D.Sc. honoris causa from Kumaun University in 1994, from Kanpur University in 1995, Banaras Hindu University in 1996, and the University of Burdwan in 2005.
He was elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in 1974. He was the Secretary of the Academy from 1983 to 1986 and its Foreign Secretary from 1989 to 1992. He was elected President of the INSA in 1993. He has been a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences since 1974, and was Vice President from 1989 to 1991. Joshi was president of the Indian Physics Association from 1989 to 1990. He is president of the Materials Research Society of India. Joshi is a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Director Profile
Dr.S.S.Gokhale
Born in Pune in 1949, Dr. Sadanand Gokhale did his schooling in Pune and Sholapur. He obtained B.Tech and M.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai in 1973. He proceeded to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he completed M.S. and Ph.D. After a brief stint as PDF he returned to India and joined Department of Aerospace Engineering in I.I.T.- Madras towards the end of 1980. His broad area of specialization is in Rockets and Missile Propulsion, CFD, Simulation and Optimization. His interest in computers and academics saw him trying his hand in use of Multi-media in School and Engineering education.
Dr. Gokhale held various administrative positions during his stint at I.I.T.- Madras. The major highlight of it was as Management Representative, I.I.T.- Madras, was the first research University achieving ISO 9001 certification. The Industry participation in the non-academic activities of the Institute was another welcome change during 90s. Innovative initiatives for the students was attempted and were successful, ranging from vehicle free/ plastic free/ cigarette free student hostel sector, battery operated electric vans for the green campus, sports complexes, personal accident and mediclaim medical insurance etc. He is trained moderator in German Methodology Goal Oriented Project Planning and has facilitated well over dozen projects for National and International Government Bodies in scientific and social projects.

Apart from arranging short term workshops for industry professionals as a routine academic activity, Dr. Gokhale has carried out research and consultancy work for predominantly defense and space organizations amounting to more than Rs.50 lakh. He continues to assist these agencies in flow and combustion simulations areas including hypersonic flows. He has guided number of undergraduate and post graduate projects. He had a brief stint as the Director of NIT Calicut during 7/2003 and 4/2005, where lot of initiatives were started to upgrade educational quality. He has served on various committees of national bodies including AICTE and MHRD. Music and reading books (as and when time permits) are his favorite past times. Once upon a time he used to whack a ball on tennis court as well - right now watching tennis and cricket on TV is the best he can do, due to the tight time constraints.

Training and Placement
1. General
Necessary guidance is provided by the Department to the students for career planning and personality development. The campus interview with prospective employers are regularly arranged for the placement of students from all branches. These include Public and Private Sector Organisations, Multi National Companies and Govt. Organisations. During the academic year 2009-2010 the Institute has been able to place 91% under graduate students in various industries before they actually pass out from the institute.

* Organising meeting with 3rd year students to appraise the procedure for Campus Recruitment.
* Preparation of a merit list of eligible students from all branches.
* Carry out correspondence with various Industries and organizations for inviting them to the Campus for placements of students.
* Follow up for finalisation of suitable dates of Campus Interviews in consultation with the industries / organizations.
* Arrange for and provide necessary assistance in the conduct of written tests , group discussion, and personal interview by the HR personnel from visiting industries and organizations.
* Arrange for display and dissemination of information related to the training and placements of students. The Campus Interviews for pre-final year students are arranged after completion of the end semester examination in May and continued through July onwards till March. To enable the students undergo summer practical training, the recruitment activity is temporarily suspended in the month of June.If the situation warrants, interviews are also arranged , in the interest of students, at the Corporate Office of the concerned industry/organization.

Dream Job Placements
The Institute has adapted Dream Job Policy since last few years. The policy provides for eligible students to opt for the industry/organization offering a minimum salary ( CTC) of 4 lac per annum.

Overseas Placements
The students are also offered job overseas through campus. M/s Hasan Juma Backer Co. LLC, Sultanate of Oman, Muscat has been regularly visiting the Institute since last seven years and has offered job to several students.

Outside Examinations
In recognition to the reputation of the Institute and the availability of infrastructure, VNIT, Nagpur is usually chosen as Centre by different govt. / public sector organizations to conduct Competitive and Entrance Examinations at national level such as Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), NITIE, Bombay, ( For M.S.E.B. ), M/s Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Mumbai etc.Large no. of students from various engineering colleges in and around Nagpur prefer the VNIT as the Centre. The number of such students is increasing continuously over the years, it is observed.

Training
Optional Training
The students undergo Industrial training during summer vacation generally for a period of 4 weeks. This training is meant for the engineering disciplines viz. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics., Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials and Mining. Although the training is optional, majority students take advantage of the same.

Hostels
V.N.I.T. has excellent residential facilities to cater the need of more than a thousand students. There are seven Boys Hostels and two Girls Hostels. Each hostel is having a telephone, T.V., Sports Items, water coolers, water heaters and well equipped mess facilities. It is mandatory for hostel inmates to join the mess in his / her hostel, managed by committee of students representatives. All hostels are having independent mess where vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are available. All residents have to bear the wages of the mess cooks, servants, helpers and cleaners. Ministerial staff is provided by the Institute. The Chief Warden looks after the management of the hostels along with a team of seven wardens and Hostel Manager.
