Profile of Rizvi College of Architecture

Introduction
Rizvi College of Architecture was established in August 1992 by Dr. Akhtar Hasan Rizvi, the well known builder and developer, in keeping with his cherished dream of setting up a network of academic institution that would develop into a modern university.

Rizvi College of Architecture has been affiliated with the University of Mumbai and has been granted approval by the AICTE for its five year Degree Course in Architecture with an annual intake of 40 students. Rizvi College of Architecture aims to evolve into a school of architectural thought focussing on the human, socio-cultural, environmental, scientific and technological, aesthetic and philosophical values. The academic programme of the College follows the syllabus of the University of Mumbai. The courses are structured to orient the studies in a range of contexts, which includes rural, urban, metropolitan, regional, national and international. Architecture as a synthesis in space and time calls for focussing on the heritage and conservation issues on one side and the innovative and developmental aspects on the other.

Rizvi College of Architecture has a faculty with rich national and international professional experience and a high standard of academic background. The faculty consists of full-time core faculty and part-time visiting faculty ensuring a higher faculty student ratio than 1:10 as required by the AICTE. Professor Akhtar Chauhan FIIA, architect planner, is the founder principal of the college.

The academic programme of Rizvi College of Architecture is supported by a related studies programme and extra-curricular activities to give an all round education and training to the students. The objective is to develop their creative skills and holistic knowledge. The annual calendar includes monthly exhibition of student and faculty works, guest lectures, seminars, workshops, study tours and events like Rizvi Arch Fest, Rizvi Arch Expo and International Conference on Humane Habitat, where architects, students and faculty of other colleges of the city participate actively.

The noble profession of architecture calls for creative and dedicated persons who are charged with a constructive urge to shape a humane environment to live in. Architecture, as an art and science of built-environment, has a crucial role to play in the process of development.

India, with its 5000 years old architectural heritage, has been in the forefront of development in various periods of its evolution. Since independence, with rapid economic development, industrial growth and urbanization, there is an ever-increasing demand for talented architects and related professionals to plan, design and manage the built-environment.

Rizvi Education Society is committed to the goals and objectives of national development. As part of this mission of human development, education and training of young citizens has been taken up in various fields of knowledge such as arts, science, commerce, architecture engineering and management.

Rizvi College of Architecture was established in August 1992 and it is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The College offers a five years Bachelors Degree in Architecture and is recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and the Council of Architecture (COA). The College has taken up the challenging task of evolving into a prime school of thought in the field of Architecture. Rizvi Education Society provides the necessary financial, technical and human resource infrastructure to develop the College as one of the most progressive centre of architecture learning. MISSION STATEMENT
MISSION STATEMENTRizvi College of Architecture is an integral part of national mission for human development through education. The prime goal of the educational programme is to prepare students for a professional role as architects in the service of humanity.

An architect has to play multiple roles in the field of built environment. However, his primary responsibility is to co-ordinate design endeavour. This requires development of leadership quality as design and planning involves teamwork. The team includes architects, planners, interior designers and landscape architects, structural and services engineers, construction and project management consultants, legal, finance and other consultants.

The College has long-term plans to offer post-graduate and doctoral programmes in various specializations in the related fields such as housing, urban design, urban and regional planning, architectural heritage conservation, interior architecture and landscape architecture.

The most essential part of the mission strategy is to develop an all round awareness of the complex issues involved in shaping of built-environment, and to equip the students with knowledge and insight to meet the challenges of development and conservation, of continuity of relevant traditions and effecting through appropriate innovation in a variety of human, social, economic, technical and environmental contexts. The mission aims at development of sincere professionals with a high standard of morals and ethics, intellectual honesty, clarity of thought and with a spirit of innovative and creativity.

Campus
Rizvi College of Architecture is situated in the new Rizvi Educational Complex located within the prestigious Rizvi Complex in Sherly Village, Off Carter Road, Bandra West, Bombay 400 050.
The campus is located near the sea-front in a picturesque and peaceful locality of Rizvi Complex. The campus is approached by bus from Bandra and Khar railway stations located about 3 kms and within 10 minutes travel-time.

Rizvi College of Architecture facilities include 5 studios, 2 lecture rooms, 2 seminar halls, a conference hall for 300 persons, an exhibitions hall, computer centre, workshop, climatological laboratory, resource centre, library, faculty rooms, meeting rooms, principals chamber and administration.

Library
The RCA has its own library whose collection is growing at a high rate. The present collection covers the subjects of arts, graphics, architectural data, construction, design, architectural theory, history, interiors, landscape, urban design, town planning, housing and technology. The RCA subscribes to numerous Indian and foreign magazines and journals. The library is open from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Rizvi Education Societys library network includes 5 institutional libraries with books covering a whole range of subjects including arts, architecture, science, engineering, economics, sociology, business management, commerce, philosophy and languages. All the institutional libraries are within walking distance of each other.

Slides collection/Audio Visual Centre
The RCA has initiated a slides collection covering various subjects related to the academic programme. This includes architectural heritage of India, historical buildings and monuments, contemporary architecture of India and the world, and human settlements.
The RCA has a set of slides projectors, overhead projectors, screens, a sound system and a video system.

WORKSHOP
The college has a wood and a metal workshop with necessary machines and tools. The students are introduced to workshop practice. They learn architectural model making and are encouraged to use the workshop facility for their design models. The college also has access to workshops of Rizvi College of Engineering including a material testing laboratory and Environmental laboratory.

COMPUTER CENTRE
Rizvi College of Architecture has a PC based computer centre, which is available for use by RCA students and faculty. The softwares available include Autocad, Word, Lotus, Photo Shop, etc.

AUDITORIUM
Rizvi Educational Complex has a multipurpose auditorium with a 500 seat capacity at the ground floor with a stage and green rooms. The students use the facility for the cultural events. Important formal functions are held in auditorium. Rizvi Arch Fest and ICHH conferences are held here annually.

CAFETERIA
Rizvi College of Architecture has a cafeteria with a capacity of 200 seats on the 1st floor. It also has a fast food and snacks counter. It serves Indian and Chinese cuisine, snacks, hot beverages and soft drinks. Rizvi College of Hotel Management and Catering Technology has a restaurant and cafeteria on the ground floor in the Rizvi Educational Complex.

Academic Programme and Curriculum
Architecture, as a synthesis of arts and science, requires integration of creative ideas and constructive practices. Rizvi College of Architecture provides an inspiring academic programme in an appropriate framework for learning. It incorporates formal courses as prescribed by the Council of Architecture and the University of Mumbai as well as informal activities and interactions. Thus, learning of Architecture becomes an on-going quest for excellence.

The five-year Bachelors Degree new programme in architecture of the University of Mumbai has been organized into 5 years and 10 terms. It incorporates Design and Planning, Arts and Humanities, Science and Technologies, Practice and Management components. The dynamic academic programme ensures that while students progress from the basic to complex and from general to particular, they acquire synthesis of awareness, skills and applications. Thus each year enables students to enhance their knowledge holistically.

The College follows the guide-lines of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the Council of Architecture (COA) and the University of Mumbai (UM) for its academic programme. It maintains a high faculty/student ratio of 1:10 as prescribed by the AICTE and COA. The Core faculty consists of senior professors and asst. professors with vision, academic and professional experience as well as young lectures with high motivation and dedication. Activities
Rizvi Arch Festival
During the first term of the academic year, Rizvi College of Architecture organizes an annual festival of architecture called Rizvi Arch Fest from August 22- 26. It is a time for festivity and informal interaction among the students, faculty and the professionals. Apart from the competitive sports and cultural events, it consists of annual exhibition of students work and an important seminar devoted to a theme. Foundation Day is celebrated on August 26 with a grand cultural programme.

Rizvi Forum Lectures
Rizvi Forum offers a Series of Lectures for the student and the public on vital issues of architecture, development and environment. Architects, interested citizens, students and faculty members of local architectural colleges are invited to these lectures. Late Prof. Yashwant Shetty Memorial Lecture is held during the Rizvi Arch Fest and Late Prof. Vivienne Japha Memorial Lecture is held during International Conference on Humane Habitat..

Seminars
The college organizes seminars on important subjects every semester. Fresh graduates of other colleges, faculty members and professionals participate in these seminars. A delegation of Rizvi College of Architecture participated in an International Inter-University symposium in Graz, Austria at the invitation of Haus der Architektur, Graz and Technische Universitat Graz in December 1995.


Workshops
Rizvi College of Architecture sponsors workshops on the issues of relevance such as Housing, Urban Architecture, Planning, Conservation, Landscapes and Environment. Some of these workshops are co-sponsored by other professional and voluntary organizations like the Indian Institute of Architects, Women Architects Forum, Urban Design Research Institute etc. The College conducts joint International workshops in association with colleges and universities abroad. International Workshop on Earthquake Resistant Rural Housing for Latur and Osmanabad districts was organised in collaboration with the Technische Universitat Graz, Austria. International Workshop on Metropolis is Transition was organised with German collaboration.

International Conferences
Rizvi College of Architecture hosts annually the International Conference on Humane Habitat in collaboration with the International Association for Humane Habitat during January / February. About 24 speakers from all over the world present their thoughts and works at the ICHH and more than 300 delegates and students participate in these conferences. The theme of ICHH 1999 was Affordable Housing for All. ICHH 2000 was devoted to the subject of Sustainable Architecture and Development, while ICHH 2001 focussed on the issues of Appropriate Architecture, Technology and Development.

Study Tours
The College organizes annual study tours to key architectural sights and centres in India to provide glimpses of architectural heritage and excellence in contemporary architecture. It is proposed to extend the scope of study tours to neighbouring countries in Asia and other continents. A study tour to Austria was organized in December 1995. A group of students and faculty visited Nepal in 1996.

Exhibitions
Every month the college puts up an exhibition of students current works and studies. These exhibitions are open to public and students of other colleges. It encourages students to excel and invokes a sense of pride in their work. It also gives opportunities to interact with other students and professionals. An annual exhibition of works, projects and studies by the faculty members is organized in the months of December / January. This provides an interesting setting for exchange of views and experience among the faculty members and fosters interaction with the students.

Rizvi Arch Expo
At the end of the calendar year an architectural exposition is hosted by the College. The first ever Rizvi Arch Expo held in December 1993 featured the works and studies by the faculty of the College. It was one pioneering exhibition for the College, which attracted students and faculty from the other colleges. Since then regularly exhibitions are organized. Most recent was the exhibition of 20 design theses entries from 10 architectural colleges in Mumbai region for Charles Correa Gold Medal 2000 which was won by Mr. Sanjay Nayak of Rizvi College of Architecture. The design thesis of the final year is the high point of the entire course, the exhibition of design theses draws students from all over Mumbai. Devika Parmar of the RCA won the Architect V.S.Gore Gold Medal of the University of Mumbai for the best architectural design thesis.

Research and Consultancy Cell
The faculty of Rizvi College of Architecture set up a research and consultancy cell in 1999. It aims to focus its attention on housing, urban design, rural, urban and regional planning. The city of Mumbai and the Metropolitan Region of Mumbai shall be the main focus of its research efforts. The Metropolis of Mumbai is considered as a real laboratory of architecture and planning for the College. Student, graduates and faculty collaborate in the on-going research activities at the College.

The RCA Consultancy cell undertakes research and consultancy projects from public and private sector organizations. It has recently submitted the final report on documentation and conservation of Marine Drive Precinct for the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) which has been highly acclaimed by them. RCACC is engaged with the study and demarcation of the coastal villages of Manori, Marve, Aksa, Madh, Erangal and Gorai. It has been assigned the tasks of identifying the heritage structures in the suburbs of Mumbai by MMRDA. RCACC is engaged in rehabilitation of earthquake affected people of Gujarat and has conducted training programme for local professionals and construction trades-persons in Kachchh.

Related Studies Programme
Rizvi College of Architecture has initiated a Related Studies Programme (RSP). It focuses on the study of rural, urban and regional architecture and human settlements. The College has a programme of research in the fields of housing, urban design, urban and regional planning, architectural conservation and sustainable development in Indian context.

The studies enable the students of the College to understand the complexities of contextual design, appropriate technology, socially relevant strategies, environment-friendly and sustainable development planning. In the long-term these studies shall provide data base for further research. The studies shall also support formulation of future directions of development for the College.

The RSP incorporates special lectures by eminent architects, planners, engineers, artists, social scientists, administrators, managers and other professionals from related disciplines. RSP includes documentation of buildings, complexes, settlements and life-style of people. Workshops on the related issues are organized as part of the programme.

The programme includes curricular and extracurricular studies. The students are expected to participate in the programme during the semester studies as well as in the vacations. Students and professionals from other colleges can also participate in the programme.

The College has collaboration with other faculty and research scholars for the programme. Rizvi College of Architecture has established academic collaboration with other colleges and institutions in India and abroad for the fulfilling the goals and objectives of the related studies programme. RCA has an active collaboration with Technical Universitaet Graz, Austria, Ecole dArchtitecture, Grenoble and Bordeaux, France.
