Stallman slams move to control social websitesRichard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), said that the move to control social networking sites amounted to censorship.
Stallman said that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) of the United States was tyrannical and intolerable. The Act is an attempt to shut down websites without any trial. If passed, any one can shut down any site with false accusation. That means any powerful regime can remove any content which they do not like.
Answering the question about the Indias move to censor social media sites, he said that sharing should be made legal. Stallman stated that in case the government buys a software from an outside company there is a possibility that the security of the country is at stake.
He inaugurated the lecture series organised by the KMEA Engineering College as part of its anniversary celebrations. He also launched the FTP server set up on the campus for free software and christened it as Infinity.
Free software can be installed in many computers simultaneously. It will help schools in saving money. The students taught in free software, will tend to use it when they graduate. It will also help the society escape from being dominated by others. Free software will also give users the freedom to cooperate with each other, he said. Mr. Stallman said that he was looking forward to developing free software that can be used in smart phones as a large number of people were using mobile phones as computers.
Free software is a matter of the users freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.
Non-free software bad for students, says Richard StallmanFree software guru Mr Richard Stallman on Tuesday urged educationists to abandon proprietary software in schools and colleges as it defeats the very purpose of education.
A child between 10 and 13 who has a natural talent for computer programming needs to read and write a lot of codes. Proprietary programmes do not reveal their codes, Mr Stallman said, inaugurating the decennial lecture series of the KMEA Engineering College at Edathala, near here.
Mr Stallman said many proprietary programmes are distributed free of cost these days in schools but this was a ploy to make s-he a slave of these programmes.
Blocking free distribution of a programme that helps work is nothing but unethical.
Using a free software will benefit the schools in three ways. Apart from saving money, it serves a social mission as education aims to create socially responsible citizens and it never holds back any programming info from the child, he said.
Mr Stallman said he realized in 1983 that he should have his freedom and so turned to champion the cause of free software.
Mr Stallman also inaugurated an FTP server to host free software programmes at the college.
