Introduction
Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) is a multidisciplinary research institute situated in Jakkur, a locality north of Bangalore, India. It is relatively young yet well-known around the Globe. Our mandate is to pursue and promote world-class research and training at the frontiers of Science and Engineering covering broad areas ranging from Materials to Genetics.

It provides a vibrant academic ambience hosting more than 200 Researchers. The Centre is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and is a deemed university. We are a relatively young but already well-known multidisciplinary research institute. Our mandate is to pursue and promote world-class scientific research and training at the frontiers of science and engineering. The Centre was established in 1989 by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, to mark the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. However, the bulk of our growth has been in the past decade1.

Our small size (around 40 faculty members, spread over several disciplines) is an advantage: not segregated in far-flung labs, our chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers rub shoulders throughout the day. This fosters a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration which is one of the hallmarks of JNCASR. In addition to our young and dynamic faculty, we have over 150 bright and energetic graduate students and state-of-the art experimental, computational and infrastructural facilities. We are a 'Deemed University', granting Master's and Ph.D. degrees.

Researchers at the Centre are divided into seven units: Chemistry and Physics of Materials, Engineering Mechanics, Evolutionary and Organismal Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Theoretical Sciences, Educational Technology and Geodynamics. We also have two off-campus units at the Indian Institute of Science: the Chemical Biology and Condensed Matter Theory Units. Though it is of course difficult to quantify scientific performance, by all numerical indications (numbers of publications, citations, grants, patents filed, etc.), science at the Centre is flourishing. In the last few years, the Centre's faculty members have published their research in some of the most prestigious scientific journals, including Nature, Nature Medicine, Science, Evolution, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and Physical Review Letters. The work of the Centre's faculty is also being recognized by various awards.

We also support a range of educational outreach activities: every year, our highly competitive Summer Research Fellowship programme hosts some of the very brightest undergraduates in the country; the Educational Technology Unit produces a range of teaching aids and educational material; we organize and teach short term courses at universities across India; and promising young chemists and biologists are trained intensively as part of our programmes of Project-Oriented-Chemical-Education (POCE) and Project-Oriented-Biological-Education (POBE).

Our faculty and students benefit from interacting with scientists at the many research institutions in the greater Bangalore area. The intellectual atmosphere at JNCASR is further livened by a regular stream of visitors from all over the world, who contribute to spirited scientific discussions at seminars, conferences and summer schools. We believe we possess all the necessary ingredients to excel in scientific research and education, and look forward to growing further in the coming years.

Profile
Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Research provides Project Oriented Chemical Education (POCE) and Project Oriented Biological Education (POBE) programmes for students already studying in 1st Year BSc. The selected students will get opportunities for research, projects and lectures in the centre. There will be maximum of 10 seats for both the programmes. The programme is conducted in summer vacations for a period of upto 8 weeks. There will be 3 such sessions. Students will also get a scholarship from the centre.

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Research is a Deemed University and was founded in 1989 by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It receives funds from the Government and provides Master's and Research programmes in the field of science. After the completion of the programmes candidates will also get a diploma in Chemistry/Biology. Students who do well during the research period will have an additional advantage to pursue Master's/PhD. after the completion of the programme. Message of President Prof. M.R.S.Rao
The centre was established in the year 1989 to commemorate the birth centenary of Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, with the initiative of Prof. C.N.R.Rao, the founder President. During the last one and half decade, the Centre has continuously grown to become one of the leading research institutions in India. The Centre is also recognized by the University Grants Commission as Deemed University in the year 2002. The Centre has very active academic programmes including training of Ph.D students as well as several extension activities to foster interaction among the scientific community from within India and abroad.

Nanoscience has the potential to become the sunrise sector in the years ahead. From converting sunlight into power, to targeting a drug to a single malignant cell, from creating sensors in the form of biochip to the ability to produce garments which can act as a chemical shield, possibilities are im mense in this (nanotechnology) domain, says Dr. Jeyaprakash, assistant professor, Karunya University.

Says Prof. CNR Rao, Linus Pauling Research Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, whose pioneering work has given India the status of an early entrant in the domain, India, still, has not realised the full import of a general purpose technology like nanoscience. It has the potential to usher in a new industrial revolution. The National Nano Mission is a step in the right direction, he adds.

In the field of nanoscience, it is material versus molecule. Nanoscientists operate from either of these major vantage points. Some are excited about the behaviour of materials, when brought down to nano levels. In other words, nanoscientists deal with reducing materials to nanosizes and observing the changes in their properties and behaviour. Prof Lubik, a leading scientist, contends that, material such as gold, which is chemically inert at normal scales, can serve as a potent chemical catalyst at nanoscales. Much of the fascination with nanotechnology stems from these different phenomena that matter exhibits at the nanoscale.

On the other hand, another group of scientists are interested in using nanoscience to assemble individual atoms into a desired molecule so as to evolve molecular-level machines. But research in this domain is very much in its infancy the world over, and India has negligible presence in the area. But India does operate in the domain of using the conventional technologies used to manufacture nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles.

As nanoscience is still evolving in India, just over 15 colleges offer programmes in the discipline. So your choices are in fact limited. The best place to study nanoscience is the JNCASR. It has one of the largest concentrations of researchers working on different aspects. Some of the NITs offer MTech programmes, which are also a good bet, especially if you are GATE-CSIR-JRF qualified candidates. Naresh Yadav, an alumnus of NIT, Bhopal says that in terms of facilities, one can never beat the IITs or IISc, but still his institute did have very good faculty.
