NAAC report of Sri Mahaveera CollegeSECTION 1: PREFACE
The Sri Mahaveera College was established in the year 1965 at Moodbidri, a pilgrim centre for Jains popularly known all over India as 'Jaina Kashi '. The college was shifted to its present campus in 1966. At present the college is on a sprawling campus of 20 acres of land with built up area of 1,42,925 Sq.ft. The college offers B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. programmes at the Degree level. It also offers Two year Pre-University Courses of Arts, Science and Commerce, a short term Diploma Course in Computer Word Processing and 3 Certificate level Courses in Music, Dance and Tailoring. The college was initially affiliated to the Mysore University and later got affiliated to Mangalore University in 1980. In the year 2000, the college was bifurcated into separate units, a Degree College and a PU College as per an order of Government of Karnataka.
At present the college has a student strength of 249 consisting of 103 boys and 146 girls. The college has 12 permanent and 21 temporary teachers. Two of the teachers possess Ph.D Degree and two M.Phil. Degree. The teachers are appointed as per UGC and University norms. The non teaching staff include 4 technical and 9 administrative personnel. The unit cost of education is Rs. 28,130. including salary.
The college got its recognition under UGC Act Section 2f and 12b in 1968.
The goals and objectives of the college are:
To provide quality higher education to the students of major parts of Moodbidri town and its surrounding areas which were distressingly backward educationally and economically.
To make education available at the doorsteps so that girls, who otherwise would not have been sent to far off colleges could go to a nearby college.
To accomplish refined knowledge; dedicate to the service of humanity; work for the progress of others as well as of oneself; Let the nation grow into prosperity.
The College has a central Library, Computer center, Health centre, Sports facilities, Hostels for boys and girls, Guest house, Canteen, Welfare schemes, Grievance Redressal Cell and Vehicle parking shed.
A peer Team consisting of Prof. Ashok Pradhan, Former Vice Chancellor, YCMO University, Nasik. (Chairman), Dr. S. C. Maheshwari Former Principal, J.B.Science College, Wardha,(Member) and Dr. C. A. Abraham Principal, Speechy Vidyapeeth Pallam Kottayam(Member Coordinator) visited the Sri Mahaveera college, Moodbidri, Karnataka on 23rd-24thFebruary 2004. During the visit the peer team interacted with the Principal, members of the Management Committee, teaching and non teaching staff, students, parents and alumni. The peer team visited various departments and facilities, checked documents to validate the Self Study Report.
SECTION II CRITERION WISE ANALYSIS
Criterion 1-Curricular Aspects.
Sri. Mahaveera College, Moodbidri, affiliated to the Mangalore University is a grant- in-aid college, which offers UG courses in B.A, B.Sc, and B.Com. B.A. course has Economics, History and Political Science as available options, B.Sc. course has (i) Botany,Zoology and Chemistry,(ii) Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science,(iii) Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry combination and B.Com. General course has Costing and Management Accountancy as Elective subjects. It also conducts a few self-financing certificate courses in MS Office, Tailoring, Bharathanatyam and Karnataka Classical Music. This rural college, the result of the dream of bringing education to the doorstep of the rural poor caters to the diverse needs of the local populace.
The goals and objectives of the institution are clearly stated. They are reviewed periodically and updated to suit the changing needs. The institution works on the annual system. Since it is an affiliated college the institution is not in a position to introduce changes in the existing curricula.
In spite of the constraints, the College tries to impart a few skills to the students to make them face the challenges of the future and has introduced some courses, which are employment oriented. Book bank facility and free midday meals are given to poor deserving students.
Many of the faculty have been Chairpersons and members of the University bodies where they helped in the framing of policies and designing of curricula.
A few have also attended national and state level workshops and seminars and presented papers.
Community service is a thrust area in the overall perspective. Students are encouraged to take part in activities like National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, Blood Donation Clubs and the like. Co-curricular activities like attending seminars, quiz competitions, writing assignments are also fostered. Question Banks are put together to help students in preparing for examinations.
Criterion 2: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
Admission to the various courses of study is based on the academic records of students and through interviews. The reservation policy is strictly followed in the matter of admissions. Regular tests are conducted and results published on time and intimated to the students. Remedial courses are conducted to help the educationally disadvantaged students before and after regular working hours. This is done without charging any extra fees. Advanced learners are motivated to work hard through regular assignments and participation in seminars and workshops as well as through methods of self-study.
A teaching plan is drawn up, right at the beginning of each academic year. The syllabi are divided into units and regular departmental meetings are held in order to monitor the progress achieved in teaching the units within the given time frame. In addition to the timeworn practices of classroom teaching, slides, charts and models are used as effective teaching aids. Teaching is made even more effective with the efficient and imaginative use of modern scientific equipment like Overhead and Slide Projectors, Rotating telescopes, CD Roms and Computer with image system. Learning is made even more attractive and participatory by conducting study tours every year.
Evaluation methods are communicated to the students at the beginning of the academic year .A continuous assessment of the student is made throughout the year by the academic advisors who furnish the Principal and the concerned parent with a complete record of the student's overall performance including his behaviour and attitude towards others.
The Management recruits teachers after proper advertisements and interviews so that the quality of the Faculty is not affected. Temporary and ad hoc appointments are also made so that the teaching learning activity is not disrupted in any way. Four teachers have attended national level seminars and attempts are made to keep abreast of the latest, in the ever-extending horizons of knowledge. The teachers assess themselves through the self-appraisal method. In addition there is also the students' evaluation of teachers, which also promotes faculty improvement.
There are different committees constituted from the members of the Staff, which give them a feeling of involvement in the working of the institution. There are also different clubs with staff co-ordinators and student secretaries. The College can bring guest faculty from other institutions and give an exposure to the students of the work done in places other than their own .It can think of conducting seminars and workshops of its own.
Criterion 3-Research, Consultancy and Extension
Among the teachers there are two who hold the doctorate degree and three who have the M.Phil degree but the scope for research activity is limited because the College offers only under graduate courses. Yet the Jaina Adyayana Kendra of the College sponsors one candidate every year to do research work related to the study of Jainism. Teachers are encouraged to avail of the Faculty Improvement Programme of the UGC and nine teachers have made use of this opportunity. Seed money is provided to teachers when special research projects are undertaken. Sixteen percent of the teaching staff are engaged in research work of whom four are doing part time research. There is one ongoing project of research funded by external agency like ICSSR, New Delhi to the tune of Rs. 86000.
The College works and plans its extension activities along with governmental and non-governmental organisations. A variety of programmes were conducted in collaboration with various bodies like the Bar Association on legal awareness, the Consumer Forum on consumer rights and the Employment Exchange of Mangalore on self-employment schemes. It has conducted outreach programmes like Mass Literacy Programme, Parisera Bharathi which is a programme on awareness about environmental pollution and tree plantation, Ranga Bharathi which encourages dramatics the Speakers'Club for public speaking and Star Gazers' Club for enlightening students and public about celestial bodies.
Criterion 4 : Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The 20 acres of land that the college owns is maintained well with the whole campus kept spruce and tidy. The garden with the well-kept lawn lends elegance to the campus. The newly enlarged playground in front of the College gives a foretaste of what we can expect beyond it. The Institution has adequate physical facilities to run the educational programmes and administrative functions effectively.
The library with its 39601 books and 66 periodicals plays an important role in the development of independent pursuit of knowledge by students. It also has some rare books including a few in Braille. Xerox facility is available.
Girls students of the hostel use the library till 6.30 p.m. and boys till 10.30 p.m. under the supervision of teachers.
Banking, Postal and S.T.D. services are available in the campus in addition to the Co-operative Stores. There is a vehicle repairs service station within the campus. The Computer Lab conducts certificate course in M.S.Office.
There are facilities for indoor and outdoor games. The gymnasium that works with 9 multi stations, Ladies room, drinking water facility, generators to meet emergencies, the open air and indoor auditorium, all play their assigned roles in the betterment of life on the campus.
The Astronomical Club is a laudable achievement of the institution. With its powerful telescope and dedicated band of teachers and students the club opens up to the public, the college community and the students in and around Moodbidri the secrets of the solar system.
However the College can think of completing computerization of the library, a Central computer facility and a Center for instrumentation. Participation of students in Regional and National games could be enhanced.
Criterion. 5: Student support and Progression.
The prospectus of the Institution gives clear guidance to students about admission and completion requirements for all programmes, fees structure and refund policies and financial aid and students support services. A college calendar and handbook is provided to each student.
The pass percentage is good with dropout rate being 7.64 %. Financial aid was received by 186 students out of the student population of 246. Students welfare activities and employment and placement are looked after by the Student Welfare Officer. In addition to the College Magazine, a wall magazine is also provided to exhibit the writing skills of the learners. A number of co-curricular and extra curricular activities are also held every year.
The teachers monitor the performance of students meticulously. The student appraisal of teachers is also started recently. The opinion of outgoing students is sought in enhancing the strength of various facilities available.
The College has a vibrant Alumni Association, which was founded a few years after the inception of the college. The Silver Jubilee Memorial Library building was constructed with their generous contribution. They have also instituted awards and prizes to meritorious students. A few of them give academic council to their present day successors. The general body meets every year when eminent former students are chief guests.
Criterion .6: Organisation and Management.
The college is managed by Sri Mahaveera College Trust, a registered body constituted by A.G.E. Manipal. The Trust, with 22 members and Governing Council with 13 members, take administrative and developmental decisions. They meet at least 4 times a year to review and monitor the growth of institution. Management techniques are used for the efficient running of the college.
Staff Council consisting of all H.O.Ds. and the principal meets 8 to 10 times a year to discuss matters relating to internal administration, examination, curricular and co-curricular aspects and day to day problems. Various committees work hand in glove with the principal to make the institution move on oiled wheels. The staff club meets once in a month to contribute in internal co-ordination.
Criterion. 7 : Healthy Practices.
The institution adopts several healthy practices.
Students of each class are divided into small groups with the Academic Advisors In-charge of the groups. These academic advisors observe the over all academic and character discipline of each student. They also keep cumulative records of their respective groups and teachers, principal and parents are informed about them.
The absence of teaching faculty is intimated on the notice board, which enables students to make alternate arrangements with the other teachers with the consent of the principal. Monthly class tests and terminal examinations are conducted and proficiency prizes given to the toppers.
PTA meetings are held twice a year where parents' observations and suggestions are heard and given top priority in implementation.
The teachers' diary, where the syllabus schedule distributed over the day's time table is recorded, countersigned by the H.O.D. and principal. Students' grievances are looked into by the Staff Council and Students' Welfare Officer.
Everyday the academic work begins with recital of the simple musical rendering of 'Geethanjali', the exalted work of Ravindranath Tagore which creates proper atmosphere for the academic pursuits to follow.
Yaksharanga, the club of developing the folk art form of Karnataka, Parisara Bharathi, a forum for the development of environmental awareness, Jain Adhyayana Kendra, a special center for research and studies in Jainology are praiseworthy attempts. Ranga Bharathi is an organization which produces atleast one play every year after training the students for a month. More than Rs.25,000 is spent per year for this.
NSS activities : The extension activities of the College include community development, health and hygiene awareness, AIDS awareness, social work, medical camps, blood donation camps and environment awareness. The ten-day NSS camp conducted every year enables interaction between the students and the rural public. The students are informed about the extension activities of the College at the time of admission through the College prospectus and by publication of such details on the College notice board. The extension activities are carried out in association with the Indian Junior Chamber, Karnataka Forest Department, Co-operative Societies and Banks, Co-operative Training Institute, Mangalore University, Employment Information and Guidance Cell.
SECTION III: OVERALL ANALYSIS.
After scrutinizing the Self Study Report, visits to the departments, facilities & interactions with the different stake holders, the peer team was happy to note that the College has shown the initiative in offering itself for Assessment & accreditation.
The peer team acknowledges the approach of the staff & management towards quality education, and would like to make the following commendations and suggestions.
The College has introduced a student feedback system for teacher evaluation and ratings for most of the teachers are very good.
The College teachers prepare a teaching plan, maintain diaries, students' attendance records, cumulative records of students progress, conduct remedial classes for weak students and monitor the progress of all students. This has resulted in improving the performance of the students and produced very good results in the University examinations and also reduced drop out rate.
The College provides ample opportunities to all students for their personality development through participation in activities like Sports N.S.S. N.C.C. Dance, Music, etc.
Value based education is imparted through morning prayer, speakers club, guest lectures campus cleanliness programmes etc. Free mid day meal is provided to selected poor and needy students residing in distant areas.
Several freeships and scholarships are also given to majority of deserving students.
Areas of Concerns and Suggestions:
The decreasing strength of students in all the streams is matter of serious concern. There is need of more elective options in Arts and Commerce faculties. It is also necessary to introduce more job oriented options like Biotechnology, Information technology etc. and also start the U.G.C. add on certificate level courses.
At present some of the department like Chemistry, Botany etc. are managed by new temporary teaching staff due to the transfer of senior teaching staff. The policy of transfer of regular staff to other colleges of the same management needs to be reviewed.
A well equipped seminar room/conference room with teaching aids installed permanentally is needed to promote the activity among students & teachers.
College can hold U.G.C. Sponsored Regional/State/National Level Seminars/Workshop.
More teachers should take advantage of FDP.
Although the management is generously promoting research work, no Ph.D. is awarded to any staff during the last 5 years. Some provision for seed money can be made to teachers taking up research in their subjects.
Library needs computerization.
Central computer facility be extended for package development and internet access to all students.
Although college has provided facilities in almost all games, but students participation & ranking is low in regional, state & national level events.
Institution should take lead in conducting coaching/guidance classes/crash courses for state level/national & international level entrance & competitive exams.
There should be a sound mechanism to assess the efficiency of non-teaching staff. Professional development programmes for them be more often conducted.
Being a multifaculty college it should develop twining programmes with other parellel bodies.
The college which was continuously producing University rank holders in the initial 30 years, has not produced rank holders in the last seven years.
The peer team places on record its appreciation of the cooperation lent by the Principal, the coordinator, teaching &non-teaching staff of Sri Mahaveera College,Moodbidri, the chairman and members of the governing body in successfully completing the validation & assessment process. The peer team is of the opinion that, this exercise will be useful to the institution to initiate the quality enhancement strategies towards further growth &development.
