A.V. Kamalamma College for women was started in the year 1967. Under the stewardship of B.E.A. (Regd), it has played right from its inception a pivotal role in imparting education to women of Davanagere and rural areas around Davanagere. As envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore that “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence”. Our college imparts education by taking this as guiding principle. The vision of a college has to go beyond the classrooms. We at AVK exhort our students to invest their time on the campus between curricular, sports and co-curricular activities and also urge them to be sensitive to our national priorities and the social problems. While imparting education at an affordable cost our institution focuses on synchronizing traditions and modernity as well as blending values and ethics with strong global competence. It is a fact that a large number of our students come from rural areas and this is an opportunity to carve out their own niches in society.

Section 1 : Preface
A.V.Kamalamma College for Women, Davangere volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted its Self Study Report. A Peer Team was constituted by the NAAC to visit the Institution and validate the Self Study Report comprising of Dr. N. Balasubramanian, Director, UGC Academic Staff College, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore as the Chairperson, Prof. Talla Venkat Reddy, Professor of Physics (Rtd.), Kakatiya University as member and Dr. (Mrs.) Sunanda Kar, Principal, Ghanshyamdas Saraf Girls' College of Arts and Commerce, Malad (W), Mumbai as Member-Co-ordinator. The Team visited the college on the 25th and 26th August, 2004.

A.V. Kamalamma College for women is located in the heart of Davanagere city. A large number of students of this college come from rural areas and economically and socially marginalized sections.

It was the strong social consciousness of the Founder that led to the establishment of this institution in the year 1967. The college having Arts, Science & Commerce faculties aims at providing quality education to girl students in low cost environment.

The college is a grant-in-aid institution, affiliated to Kuvempu University, Shimoga offering 8 UG programmes. It is located in an urban area. The institution is recognized under 2(f) & 12 (B) and is receiving development grants from UGC. It has teaching staff strength of 41 permanent teachers, 40 temporary teachers and non-teaching staff strength of 26. The student strength is 1596. The unit cost of education in this institution is Rs. 916/-. While offering above mentioned UG programmes, the institution promotes personality development of students through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The Peer Team examined the details of the infrastructural facilities available at the college, curricular and co-curricular programmes and the various aspects of the functioning of the Institution. Besides interacting with the Principal, students, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, Alumni of the college and the Governing Body, it also elicited their views on the facilities and functioning of the Institution. The team examined all the relevant records and paid visits to different departments, laboratories, central library, canteen, NSS, NCC, Sports and Students Welfare Units of the college. Based on the above exercise and the seven criteria identified by the NAAC, the assessment of the institution is presented as follows:-

Section 2 : Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion 1 : Curricular Aspects
A.V. Kamalamma College for Women, Davangere is a women's college affiliated to Kuvempu University, Shimoga. The constraints of the affiliating system of an institution are overcome with the introduction of a variety of optionals made available to the girl students mainly in Arts & Science faculties. Some of the teachers who have been associating with the Boards of Studies of the University are able to influence changes in the curriculum and in the introduction of innovative courses. The class-room academic activities are further supported by field visits. Their syllabi are periodically updated as per the guidelines of the University. The Arts Faculty of the college offers combinations courses with a variety of optionals as detailed below:-

English, Psychology & Sociology;

History, Political Science & Sociology;

History, Economics & Political Science and

History, Home Science & Political Science.

The Science Faculty of the college offers the courses with the following optionals :-

Physics, Chemistry & Maths;

Chemistry, Botany & Zoology and

Integrated Home Science.

The Commerce Faculty of the college has all the subjects on compulsory basis. Most of the staff members being Chairpersons and members of BOS and BOE of Kuvempu University, contribute in framing syllabi for various courses at the University. They also function as co-ordinators for theory and practical examinations. The college adopts inter-multidisciplinary approach. Intra and inter departmental discussions are held to upgrade the knowledge of the teachers. The college has 35 rank holders at the University level in final B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com degree examinations of Kuvempu University in the last 11 years.

Criterion 2 : Teaching - Learning and Evaluation
Admissions to various courses of study are done on the basis of the academic record of the students. After admission, the students are assessed of their entry behaviours for the programme concerned by conducting tests and seminars. Accordingly remedial and bridge courses are arranged for the slow learners. The advanced learners are motivated to take up active part in classroom seminars and discussions besides home assignments.

There is a definite teaching plan followed by all the faculty members. The teachers also maintain a work diary which is verified by Head of the Department every week and by the Principal every month to make sure that the syllabus is covered as per the schedule. If necessary, special classes are engaged to cover the syllabus as per schedule. The lecture method of teaching is supplemented by tutorials, seminars, field visits and using audio-visual aids viz., Slide Projector, OHP. The evaluation methods are communicated to the students at the beginning of the academic year through the academic calendar. The percentage of lectures engaged by permanent faculty is 75 %. There is an attendance committee to monitor the attendance of students. The college has dedicated and qualified faculty to handle the classes. The recruitment of teachers is made according to the Government norms. The college has freedom and resources to appoint and pay temporary/ad-hoc teachers as and when required.

Some of the teachers have participated in national/regional level seminars and workshops. There are 6 (six) teachers who have participated in National Level seminars and two of them have presented papers. There is also self appraisal method to evaluate the performance of the teacher. There is also a system of evaluation of teachers done by students. Apart from teaching, there is a definite contribution of the teachers in the college administration by being members of various committees viz., Administration Committee, Admission Committee, Extra-Curricular Committee, Examination Committee, Library and Reading Room Committee, Sports Committee, Attendance Committee, Students Welfare Committee, Tutorial Committee, Academic Advisory Committee, Campus Maintenance Committee, Vehicle Stand Committee, Staff Grievances Redressal Cell Committee, Students Grievances Redressal Cell, Non-Teaching Staff Grievances Redressal Cell, Students Counseling Committee, Alumni Association Coordinating Committee, Parent-Teachers' Association Coordinating Committee, Prospectus Preparation Committee, Magazine Committee, Remedial Classes Committee, Canteen Committee, Tour Committee, Career & Employment Guidance Committee.

Criterion 3 : Research, Consultancy and Extension
The college offers only undergraduate programmes and hence research activity is confined to the research done by the faculty members. At present, three teachers are engaged in research.

The college teachers are providing consultancy to students for higher and professional studies.

The college has designated teachers to undertake extension activities as additional charge and these activities are mainly through the NCC & NSS units of the college. The college undertakes extensive extension activities such as arranging blood donation for patients of Bapuji Hospital, observing International Literacy Day, arranging special NSS camps, organizing AIDS awareness Programmes, eye pledge camps, pulse polio programmes, adult education programmes etc. The volunteers of NSS have participated in pre-R.D. camp at Sreeperumpudur. The students are also exposed to environment, health and hygiene awareness. The NCC unit of the college is attached to 33 KAR BAN Davanagere having 107 cadets. Under the able guidance of a qualified and dedicated NCC officer almost every year cadets of the college have attended the prestigious Republic Day Camps. Foreign Youth Programme (YEP), Basic Leadership Republic Day Camp, Thal Sainik Camp, etc. Many of the cadets have also passed B and C certificate examination.

Criterion 4 : Infrastructure & Learning Resource
The college has class-rooms, Principal's office, teachers rooms, canteen, sports room, etc. There is a separate library building. Keeping in mind the academic growth of the college, the Governing Body is planning to start the Department of Bio-Technology. The infrastructure is maintained with the financial aid of the Government and by the Bapuji Educational Association. The library and the sports room are open from 09.30 a.m. to 05.30 p.m. to make optimum use of the infrastructure. The campus is kept beautiful by maintaining college garden and botanical green house. The services of the NCC and NSS volunteers are also utilized to keep the campus beautiful.

The college has a spacious independent library building measuring 9120 sq.ft. The library has a collection of about 30000 books on various subjects of Science, Arts, Commerce and languages. The library has a good collection of dictionaries, encyclopedias. The library subscribes to 30 periodicals and journals besides 12 news papers. The library is attached with a reading room, reference room in addition to a separate reference room for teachers. The library provides books to students for home reading, reference, etc. An amount of Rs. 49153/- has been spent in 2003-2004. The library staff includes one each of Senior Librarian, Library Assistant, Clerk, attendant and three peons. Special mention can be made of one attendant who is a sports person of international repute.

The college library has an advisory committee which looks after the matters relating to the library. There is a Book Bank facility for SC/ST students. A total number of 200 students can be accommodated in the library at a given time.

The college has enough classrooms, a canteen with acqua-guard facility. The college is using sports room as the meeting hall for academic and cultural activities. The college encourages students to participate in indoor and outdoor games. There is an indoor games hall having table-tennis boards, carrom boards, chess boards, etc. There is a sports ground where outdoor games like volleyball, ball badminton, kho-kho, kabbadi, throw ball, shot put, etc., are conducted. The outstanding sports persons are given cash awards as an incentive. Under the able guidance of the Physical Director, the college has to its credit, many sports women who have represented at the State/Regional/National tournaments and have won prestigious awards like Arjuna Award, etc. The college is representing at the intercollegiate and interuniversity sport events.

The commerce department has a computer lab as a part of its curriculum. The college offers health services to the needy students at the hospitals of the Bapuji Education Association.

Criterion 5 : Students Support & Progression
The institution is an exclusively women's college which has been encouraging women's empowerment through education by extending all possible facilities. The drop out rate is 4.5 %. The progression in higher education is about 50%. The college has to its credit, a number of prominent alumni at various capacities. Some of them are teachers, administrative officers, media personnel, etc. There are also alumni who have become National level sports persons. Some of them have passed NET, SLET, Indian Civil Service Examination, TOFEL, etc.

The college publishes its updated annual prospectus where all details pertaining to admission, fees structure, courses offered, infrastructure and other facilities, available scholarships, extra-curricular activities and calendar of events are given. Financial assistance is made available to the students from State / Central Governments.

The Alumni of the college participate in various programmes of the college. The college provides ample facilities for the recreation of the students. Some visual aids are available for the benefit of students. The Department of Botany has a well equipped and well furnished laboratory, a museum and a green house. Students are also provided with specialized knowledge of raising of Bonsai and advanced facilities like Slide Projectors, OHP, etc., to support their learning. The Department of Zoology has a well equipped museum with good number of specimens along with other equipments, charts, models, slides and departmental library. The Department of Home Science has cooking ranges, microwave oven, sewing machines, crockery sets and many other facilities to provide the students specialized techniques. The Physics and Chemistry departments have spacious laboratories and sufficient equipments. All the departments have intercom facilities.

Criterion 6 : Organisation and Management
The college has efficient internal co-ordinating and monitoring mechanism. The day to day administration of the college is undertaken by a number of committees where teachers play an active role. The college Governing Council and the Trust also monitor the progress of the college.

There is an efficient inbuilt mechanism to check work efficiency of the non-teaching staff through the supervision of the Principal.

There is also a special committee to prepare the academic calendar. All decisions of the Selection Committee are approved by the Governing Council. The college has a vehicle stand, payphone arrangement and computer with internet facility in the office.

Since the college is an Aided Institution, the fee structure is fixed by the Government. The college has an internal audit mechanism through the Principal.

The college has a Group Insurance scheme for the staff. There is a special cell of Grievance Redressal. The students' welfare officer, the staff secretary and the Principal look into the grievance of students, teaching and non-teaching staff respectively. The Trust has a house building co-operative society which builds house of the teaching and non-teaching staff. It also has a co-operative bank through which various loans are provided to the employees.

Criterion 7 : Healthy Practices
The internal quality check, regularity and punctuality of the teachers, discipline, academic and extra curricular performance of the students are some of its noteworthy features. The institution has the awareness for the latest managerial skills such as strategic planning, team work and decision making.

The institution has entered into national and international linkages through its students exchange programme. The celebration of the National festivals and Teachers' day are designed to inculcate patriotism, tolerance and mutual respect among the students. Civic responsibilities among students are developed through NCC and NSS. The NSS special camp at Turchgatta village has intended to inculcate in the students an awareness of their civic responsibilities. Representation of NCC cadets every year in Republic Day Camp at Delhi and their participation in foreign youth exchange programme camps reflect special achievements of the unit in developing leadership qualities and discipline among the students of the institution.

There are many committees aimed at promoting all round personality development of the students. Students are encouraged to participate in cultural activities and yoga, Karate, develop hobbies like painting, gardening, writing and participating in inter-collegiate competitions, etc.

Teaching activities in the college is learner oriented. Interaction in the class-room makes the learning process easier and affective. The students are motivated to involve themselves in group discussion, literary activities and seminars. Identity cards are provided to both students and staff.

Section 3 : Overall Analysis
The College under review was examined and analysed by the Peer Team in a comprehensive manner. Documents, departmental inputs, official records, financial details, examination data regarding the percentage of success, percentage of drop-out, inputs from parents, Alumni and students were thoroughly examined and scrutinized. The Peer Team would like to submit the following points of commendation.

The development of the society is at the center of the mission of the college. It prefers to do that by empowering women through quality education. This is indeed laudable.

The college has necessary infrastructure to support teaching and learning process.

The NCC and NSS units of the college have done commendable work. NCC students of the college have represented in Republic Day Parade and many other National and International Camps. Many prestigious medals and awards were won by the students in many events.

The achievements of the Sports Department are also commendable. The college has good reputation for producing some good sports persons who have represented at the Karnataka State level, at National level and at the Asian games also.

The college management is very considerate in providing financial support in the form of loans to the teaching and non-teaching staff for house building, purchasing of vehicle and for other purposes also. The Trust is also providing support to the staff in building the houses through its co-operative society. It is also providing health services to the students and the staff in the hospital run by it.

The students union gives a platform to the students to carry on their extra-curricular activities which help leadership qualities in the students. The college is teaching Sanskrit language through Devanagari script.

Most of the teachers are actively involved in various academic bodies of the Kuvempu University. Four of them have registered for Ph.D programme.

Efforts have been taken up to develop the communication skills among learners.

A faculty in the Department of Economics was able to publish a reading material in Economics with a view to help the learners to gain better understanding.

It is learnt from the Department of Political Science that students prefer the subject with an eye to appears for Civil Service Examination. One of the teachers of the Department is found to be deeply involves in different bodies academic and administration of the University.
One of the faculty members in the Department of English has already published hundreds of popular letters and articles in the new paper.

Some Departments of the college issue books from its library to the needy ones.

One faculty member in the Department of Kannada is pleased to give a cash award every year to the top scorer in Kannada.

A few of the teachers are found to be contributing to the All India Radio, Davangere at times.

The Department of Sanskrit gets cent percent results since its inception.

A teacher in the Department of Urdu has been given the best teacher award by a Muslim Academy.

The NSS unit and NSS officer have won the Best Unit and Best Programme Officer award respectively.

The Department of History conducts educational tours and awareness programmes in protection of Ancient Monument in rural areas. Distribution of paper cuttings of the best papers published in news papers and some of the best learning experiences are given to students in the Department.

The Department of Sociology takes it students to jails to have interviews with prisoners. Students are also taken to the State Home for women's Remand Home to have a direct knowledge related to the women's issues.

The institution is bringing out the college magazine every year.

However the following suggestions are made for further improvement of the college.
Out of 41 permanent teachers, only 03 members have Ph.D qualification. Hence, the teaching faculty may be motivated to do research as it would contribute to the enhancement of their knowledge.

The college may establish a placement cell with a committee of teachers who can guide the students for various employment opportunities and placement.

The college was started in 1967 and offers undergraduate courses in Science, Home Science, Arts and Commerce. Hence it is suggested that efforts should be made to start Post Graduate Programmes in some departments.

The college/ departments should organize seminars / workshops/ conferences, etc. The teachers should present papers in seminars and workshops and should attend seminars/ conferences /workshops regularly.

The classroom furniture that is the benches have to be provided with a back support.

Water cooler facilities are to be extended in all the floors and in the library.

A full fledged and independent seminar hall has to be provided.

A separate audiovisual centre with latest electronic equipments should be provided.

All the students should be involved in the clean and green programme of the campus at least once in a month.

Total computerization of the library is needed. More tables and chairs are needed in the library. Beautification of the library is needed to add ambience.

Arrangement has to be made for continuous water supply in the toilets in emergency.
