Recycle paper and educate the girl childAug. 1: Linking an environmental cause to a social issue, the students of St Joseph s College of Business administration are beginning a program in the city to encourage recycling of paper. This will save trees, contribute to effective waste management and emphasize the importance of educating the girl child.
Here s how it works. The recycling program aims to collect as much waste paper as possible from across the city and sell this to scrap dealers, raising money for supporting the education of the girl child under a national program. This is a nation-wide initiative on a large scale. Its goal is to recycle 1,000 tonnes of paper, save 17,000 trees and educate 3,000 girls across the country. The drive will begin at St Joseph s College from August 8, before moving on to other colleges in Bengaluru as well as offices and homes, stated Raksha Karpoor, a student of St Joseph s and coordinator for the recycle week program in the city. In India, 8.5 million tonnes of paper are produced every year, of which only 20 per cent is recycled. One tonne of recycled paper can save 17 trees! That amounts to a measurable environmental impact, stated Mathew Jose, Founder-director of Paperman , that has launched the recycle week programme across cities in India.
As a country, people here are more socially connected than environmentally connected. That was how the idea of merging the two came about. When people become aware of one issue, the other cause becomes a part of the conversation as well. With this program, the green cause of recycling will create support for the social cause of education. While enrollment rates of girls are improving in the country, drop-out levels continue to remain high. Additionally, with such a low percentage of paper being recycled, there is a considerable amount of damage to our environment, added Mr Jose.
The programme plans to collect the used paper through paper drives, sell it to the scrap dealers in bulk and pool that money to support the education of 3,000 girls. That is the target at present. The recycle program can be initiated anywhere, by anyone and at any time of the year, stated Mr Jose.

Not only is Bengaluru boy Neville Bharucha passionate about this genre, he has won the first prize at the prestigious Con Brio All India Piano Competition that was held in Mumbai. It was a tough one and I was mentally exhausted. The achievement is still sinking in, says the 19-year-old, a commerce student at St Joseph s College of Commerce, who has Russian concert pianist Natalia Kapylova for teacher.
He composed his first original short piece at seven and was only 14 when his performance in the Trinity College Eighth Grade Piano exam of October 2006 won him the Capt. Alvares Trophy for Excellence. He passed his ATCL diploma (by Trinity College — Guildhall School of Music) with a distinction. He also won the prestigious Peter Coelho Memorial Award for Music thrice. Last year, Neville was invited by the North American Zoroastrian Congress to perform with acclaimed conductor Farobag Cooper.
How did it all start for him? My dad, an engineer by qualification, always nurtured enthusiasm for music. There was always classical music playing at home. When I was three, I would stand in front of a piano and be enamoured by the sounds. When I was five, my dad went scouting for a piano teacher, but we were told to come back when I was older. So my dad took the responsibility of teaching me, says Neville, who gave his first recital when he was nine. It included 10 original compositions, he adds.
Neville took classes at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and was privately tutored by Krystian Belliere, one of the UK s outstanding pianists. It s amazing to learn from talented musicians who don t hesitate to pass on secrets, says the boy. In love with cars and technology, he quips, I love collecting models of cars and aeroplanes. His aim in life is to work in music, and he dreams of collaborating with concert pianist Paul Stewart and Krystian Belliere someday.

As we celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, a city college is taking environmental education to the next level. St Josephs College of Arts and Science is one of the first colleges to be completely powered by solar energy.
Students of the college are proud of this achievement. Pramod Dominic, a second year BCA student says, Its cool to know the college is running on solar power. Right from school, youre always taught about sustainable development. But now, this solar project shows that its not just talk, but its actually possible to use renewable energy on such a large scale.
The college has a solar power plant, comprising of 432 solar panels, which provide electricity to power all the facilities.
The person who brought about this project in the college is the former principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto.
Fr Pinto, who resigned last month, said, We strive to teach our students the advantages of using renewable sources of energy. This solar power plant gives us a chance to show them that it is possible to do so.
Yellappa Reddy, an environmentalist, feels, This initiative is interesting. It should also be known that using nuclear energy, hydro power, thermal power, etc., harm the environment and disturbs the biodiversity. Safe natural resources such as solar and wind energy are better options, he said.
This pioneering project sets an example which other institutions can seek to emulate. Lydia Samuel, principal of Baldwin Womens Methodist College agrees, This is an interesting and innovative venture. We could probably consider adopting something similar a few years down the line.
P Ranreiphi Kharie, a student from Garden City College says, Its a really good initiative. They have set a practical example for students to work towards saving energy. I think other colleges should also start implementing such innovative plan in their colleges.
Marry Pee, a Central College student says, Its a very noble thought to have come up with this alternative. We dream of a better environment and it has to start from an individual. Its good St Joseph is taking up the initiative at college level. it will be an inspiration for others too.

Bryan serenaded her on stageThe Bryan Adams concert on Sunday evening was a huge hit with fans. But what got the audience talking was the young and spirited Deann DCunha who was called on stage by the Canadian singer. She sang his hit number Baby When Youre Gone with such energy that even Adams was left amazed.
Deann, a final year student from St Josephs College of Commerce, had no clue that the concert would change her life. This is her first Adams concert and it was a thrilling experience she says. My friends and I actually got to the venue four hours before Bryan came on stage. It was an amazing feeling to be on stage with him, says an excited Deann.
Even actor Suniel Shetty who was sitting in the VVIP enclosure was impressed with her confidence! Deann has no prior experience in music and considers herself more of a bathroom singer. She was pleasantly surprised with the compliments she received. That was the first time I had sung publicly. I absolutely love Baby When Youre Gone and I know the lyrics by heart. It just came naturally to me on stage.
And what did Bryan tell her after her little performance on stage? He was really sweet. He told me to think of this moment the next time I am in economics class because I was really good. He even gave me his guitar plectrum for good luck! It was definitely the start of a lucky week since she bumped into the singer again the next day at the Lalit Ashok with friends. We had just finished lunch and were leaving when we saw Bryan with his entourage. I seriously couldnt believe my luck! says Deann.
The news of her singing with Bryan Adams on stage spread like wild fire in the city. Even people who I did not know came up to me and told me that I sang beautifully. It was a bit freaky, says an amused Deann.
So, are there any plans to be in showbiz after this? Definitely not! I dont think Im that great a singer. A profession in music is not on the cards for me, says Deann. Her dream has come true and she is more than satisfied.
NAAC report of St Josephs College of CommerceSection 1:Introduction
St. Joseph's College of Commerce is a private, aided and co-educational Roman Catholic Christian minority institution. It was established in the year 1972 and is affiliated to Bangalore University. It is recognized under Section 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act. It became an autonomous institution in September 2005.
St. Joseph's College of Commerce is one of the several educational institutions managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society. Located in a central area of Bangalore city, the campus is spread over an area of 2.09 acres, with a functional five-storeyed structure. The entire infrastructure is exclusively meant for the use of the students of this College. The college aims at academic excellence, social concern and character formation among the students joining the institution.
At present the College is offering two Undergraduate degree programmes, namely, B.Com., with four divisions, each division consisting of 70 students, BBM with one division of 70 students and M.Com with an intake of 30 students, besides several certificate courses. Two divisions of B.Com are under grant-in-aid and all other programmes are run under self-financing scheme. The total enrollment of students during the academic year 2006-07 is 1187(Boys 825 and girls 362). The teaching faculty consists of 9 (4 males, 5 females) teachers under grant-in-aid and 20 (5 males and 15 females) teachers are appointed by the management who are paid out of funds generated by the self financing programmes. The non-teaching staff consists of 15 (14 males, 1 female) employees under grant-in-aid and 18 (11 males, 7 females) under self-financing schemes.
St. Joseph's College of Commerce was first accredited in the year 2000 with five star status. It volunteered for re-accreditation by submitting its self study report to the NAAC in May 2006. The Council constituted a Peer Team consisting of Prof. V. Ramakistayya, former Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, Hyderabad, as Chairman; Prof. M. Gangadhara Rao, Director, College of Management Studies, GITAM, Visakhapatnam and Dr. (Ms.) G.H. Gidwani, Principal, St. Mira's College for Girls, Pune as Members. Mr. Raja Ram Kota, General Manger, Administration, Infotech Enterprise Ltd., Bangalore joined the team as an Observer. Mr. B.S. Ponmudiraj, Assistant Adviser, NAAC, co-ordinated the visit of the Team.
The Peer Team visited the College on 15th and 16th December 2006. It carefully perused and analysed the Self-study report submitted by the College. During the institutional visit the team went through the relevant documents; visited the departments and facilities; saw the academic, co-curricular, sports and extension activities of the College. The team interacted with the Members of the Governing Body, the Principal, the teaching and non-teaching staff and the students of the College. Based on this exercise, and keeping in mind the seven criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer Team has given its objective assessment of the College in the ensuing paragraphs.
Section 2: Criterion-wise Analysis
CRITERION I: CURRICULAR ASPECTS
A single faculty college, St. Joseph's College of Commerce is affiliated to the University of Bangalore, and was granted academic autonomy in September 2005. The regular degree courses offered by the college are: 1) B.Com. - With Advanced Financial Accounts, Marketing Management and Finance as elective options; 2) BBM - With Finance and Human Resource Management as elective options; 3) M.Com. - With Taxation and Financial Accounts as elective options.
Apart from the above, the college also offers vocational courses such as Diploma in Secretarial Practice; as well as Certificate Courses in Tally, Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Corporate Communication Skills, International Business, Human Relations Management In addition, coaching classes are also conducted for CA (PE I & PE II). All the courses offered are aimed at improving the employability of the students in a competitive, market-driven economy. The placement of students in high profile jobs is a clear indication of the high employability levels of the students of this College.
It is highly commendable that the College aims at the total development of the students at all levels-- intellectual, physical, spiritual, social and emotional. At the time of graduation, the college expects a Josephite to be a mature person with sharp intellectual acumen, commitment to social justice and with a secular, democratic and practical outlook. These goals and objectives are made known to internal constituents through the college prospectus and to society in general through the college website www.sjcc.ac.in. In addition, classroom teaching, value education classes and extension activities help in communicating and creating awareness about the College mission and goals.
The college attempts to enhance the quality of curriculum by special endeavors like encouraging innovative teaching methodologies and inviting industry experts for guest lectures. Its certificate courses undoubtedly enrich the academic offering by the institution. Over the last five years, the college has also introduced short-term computer courses to ensure that the computer literacy level on campus is almost hundred percent. In addition, the college lays emphasis on use of IT and Internet in academic pursuits.
The College conducts staff-training programmes each semester. In addition, the newly inducted faculty members undergo special training programmes organized by the senior faculty for enhancement of their skills and for effective classroom performance.
The commencement of the BBM course is an initiative for greater academic flexibility. The Certificate Programmes have increased the academic flexibility and added variety to the courses offered by the College.
The Peer team would like to suggest that the college may use its autonomous status to introduce more innovative and flexible programmes to serve student needs and aspirations. A gradual progression to choice-based credit system would be appropriate at this stage. At present there is only one board of studies for B.Com, BBM and M.Com. The peer team suggests that separate boards of studies may be constituted for B.Com, BBM and M.Com.
The college may introduce UG and PG programmes specializing in Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Retail Management, Animation, e-Commerce, Risk and Insurance Management. It may introduce relevant employment oriented vocational courses approved by UGC.
CRITERION II: TEACHING, LEARNING AND EVALUATION
The college has student-oriented teaching-learning practices. The admission to the College conforms to the Government requirements. Since it is an aided institution with minority status, fifty percent of the seats are reserved for Christians and the rest are filled as per Government guidelines. Even so, the admission policy wherever possible tries to strike a fair balance between merit and the commitment to the marginalized and disadvantaged sections of the society. The Admission is based on merit as well as on extra-curricular achievements of the students.
At the time of admission, there is an assessment of the learning abilities of students, predominantly based on marks obtained and their performance during the interview. Students are classified as 'Advanced', 'Average', and 'Slow learners' and enrolled in different divisions. The Teaching methodology is tailored to the specific needs of these groups. Post autonomy, the student intake capacity has been reduced from 105 to 70 per division (with the permission of Bangalore University). For admission to BBM and M.Com courses, the college conducts an entrance test and Group discussion. The students identified as advanced learners are constantly motivated to take up projects, make presentations in class and come up with innovative ideas. They are also encouraged to take up professional exams of the C.A (PE - I & II), ICWA (Foundation and Inter) ACS (Foundation and Inter). Such students also take up research projects and attend seminars and workshops in order to update themselves with the latest developments in the field of Commerce. Similarly the college takes special care to meet the special requirements of slow learners by offering bridge and remedial courses at the entry level with the help of its own post-graduate students. The teachers also identify the weak students and offer help by arranging coaching classes and giving individual attention after the class hours. The tradition of peer learning amongst students which is prevalent in the college is commendable.
The Planning of Academic work schedule is done collectively, involving the Principal, Dean and all the Faculty members through staff meetings, before the commencement of each Academic Year. This process facilitates estimation of work hours, subject allotment and preparation of the work plan. The detailed work schedule is provided to all staff members at the beginning of each semester.
The teaching methodology is learner focused and is participatory in approach, comprising group discussions, classrooms presentations, role-plays and skits, quizzes, debates, audio-visuals and web based learning. Other innovative teaching-learning techniques include students/teachers websites; availability of learning material in the common directory of computer lab network, to facilitate learning after class hours; use of multimedia facilities and e-learning resources among students. In order to enhance the quality of academic input, Guest Lectures are regularly arranged on the topics of interest, which are relevant to the curriculum. An incentive cum reward system is in place to constantly encourage pedagogic innovation.
The Teaching-Learning Process tries to encourage self-study through extensive use of learning resources particularly the Library and the Internet. Group presentations by students encourage healthy inter-personal interaction, foster good teamwork and develop leadership qualities. The respective class mentors on the basis of performance in the internal tests and exams monitor the academic progress of students. The College may invite more guest speakers and senior executives from industry. The institute may organize more Seminars, Workshops and Conferences at regional, national and international levels with the active participation of faculty and students.
The teaching staff are encouraged to participate in UGC sponsored refresher/ orientation programmes, national/ international seminars. The teaching innovations in the last five years, have witnessed an extensive use and application of electronic technologies like the use of LCDs, OHPs and the use of computer facilities. Equity in access to Internet facilities is ensured by making the College campus a wi-fi zone.
Appraisal of teacher performance is done by administering a comprehensive staff evaluation questionnaire, to be filled in and submitted by the students. The findings of the questionnaire are later tabulated and analyzed and then handed over to each teacher individually to facilitate professional growth. The appraisal of teacher performance is done twice a year, at the end of each semester. Performance based incentives are also offered in this context.
The Evaluation of student performance in a semester is based on two mandatory tests and one internal exam and the end semester exam conducted by the University. The break up of marks is 50 marks for final exams and 50 marks for continuous internal assessment, which would be reflected in the end semester marks card. The internal assessment component may be entirely decided by the concerned teacher who taught the subject. The conduct of examinations, paper setting, and valuation may be done by the concerned teacher.
The reforms in the evaluation procedure post-Autonomy include the establishment of an Examination Committee, introduction of multiple choice-objective type method of testing, introduction of snap tests and giving assignments to students whose performance has been poor in internal tests. Complete transparency is sought to be practiced in the internal evaluation system, as students are handed over the valued answer scripts and encouraged to seek required clarification from the teachers if necessary. The Grievance Redressal Cell looks into students' grievances over matters pertaining to evaluation procedure and makes relevant suggestions to the Examination Committee to bring about proactive changes if necessary.
The Controller of Examinations' Office needs streamlining inview of autonomous status of the college. There is a need for drafting a clear and comprehensive Manual of Examinations incorporating clear guidelines in all areas pertaining to conduct of examinations, paper setting, valuation and redressal of grievances, if any, in this regard.
CRITERION-III: RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION
The college recognizes the importance of research activities and publications by the faculty and encourages them to undertake research. Nine of the faculty are doctorate degree holders; another nine have M.Phil as their highest academic qualification and four have cleared the State Eligibility Test prescribed by the UGC.
The College has organized six state level seminars and one national level seminar during the last five years. Nine have presented papers at National level seminars and one at an International Seminar. The senior faculty members have been guiding students to carry out research work. Some of the important research projects taken up by under graduate students; include Coffee Exports in Karnataka, Micro Finance and Islamic Banking.
The College may try to enhance its capacity for collaborative research with industries and user agencies.
The College over the last five years has brought a few publications, which include four books and two Journals.
The consultancy extended by the faculty members include two training programmes on Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance, organized at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. by the faculty members. However, the college has to strengthen its activities in this area further.
The college has laid special emphasis on outreach programmes and extension activities instilling in students a sense of social concern and responsibility. The NSS (National Service Scheme) and AICUF (All India Christian University Federation), also help in sensitizing students about contemporary social difficulties and in pro-actively addressing these problems.
Field visits to orphanages, old age homes, prisons, street children shelters, slums are organized to create awareness amongst students about the less privileged sections of society. Besides this, the NSS unit conducts the annual camps in rural areas for providing an insight into the rural realities. During these annual camps, the NSS volunteers have constructed houses for the poor families, built a rehabilitation center, have undertaken repair and renovation of temples and monuments. They have also participated in planting of trees, building drainage facilities; road widening and repair work in rural areas. The Women's Cell has organized special lectures on gender sensitization with the help of 'Respect for Life', an NGO. The members of the Women's Cell also undertake remedial teaching for the underprivileged children.
The college also organizes a free computer literacy programme for the poor children in the college neighbourhood of Ashoknagar. The Students of BBM participated in a rural exposure programme arranged by the college. During the Tsunami disaster, a committee consisting of staff and students got together and undertook relief work for the victims, which was sponsored by the Management. A dynamic group of students have registered an NGO, 'YUVA' to work with the physically challenged children.
The College had recently acquired membership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the purpose of carrying out corporate related research activities and for support in conducting seminars and workshops in the field of Commerce and Management.
While commending the excellent work done by the college under its Extension and Outreach programmes, the Peer team recommends that greater emphasis could also be laid on academic research, organization of state-level and national seminars, and research publications by members of the Faculty.
CRITERION - IV: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES
The college has excellent infrastructure facilities impeccably maintained on a total area of about 2.2 acres. The academic building houses 28 classrooms, an Administrative section, Sports room, Auditorium, four Audio-Visual rooms, Library, Computer Lab, Prayer Hall, Canteen, two staff rooms, two storerooms and adequate toilet facilities. The classrooms are spacious and well lit. The Administrative section includes the Principal's chamber, Dean's room, Administrative and Accounts section, Conference room, and cubicles for Office Superintendent, Student Governor, and Student Counselors.
The facilities available for the Sports Department include a well-furnished Sports Room, Playground, Basketball Court, Volleyball court, Multi Gym, Indoor Games facilities for Table Tennis, Carom and Chess.
The college has fully equipped Audio Visual Room, separate cubicles for privacy of staff members, a prayer and meditation hall and an ultra modern Multi Gym facility. There has been substantial increase in the parking space to accommodate students' and staff vehicles. There have also been improvements to the College Canteen, with the completion of the third phase of the College building.
The unit cost of education last year per students including staff salary was Rs.16,408/- and excluding staff salary was Rs.10,306/-. Adequate allocation has been made in the budget towards maintenance of buildings, for maintenance of furniture and equipment, and for maintenance of the Computer facilitiess. Optimum utilization of infrastructure is ensured by renting out facilities like Audio Visual Rooms, auditorium and classrooms to outside agencies for conducting exams, interviews and other programmes. This arrangement also enables the institution to raise additional revenue.
The Central Library which has 16,499 books, 70 journals and 32 periodicals works on an average 265 days in a year. It is open during the official timings of the College, eight hours a day. The Library has secured institutional membership with British Council and Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts (ICFAI). The archive section has a collection of back dated issues of important journals and magazines for reference by the faculty and students particularly for research activities. The Library functions have been totally digitized.
The College has a modern Information Technology infrastructure, with 187 computers of which the computer Lab is the nodal point. There are two computer labs, and the main computer lab accommodates 100 students and the other 70. The remaining computers are installed in the administrative wings. The students and faculty can use the facilities free of cost. The Wi-Fi zone ensures that unlimited Internet access is available to the teachers and students to assist computer-aided teaching/learning. The Computer lab offers certificate course in Tally (Accounting Package) E-Commerce (M.Com), Internet, Computer applications and hardware assembling. It also conducts free computer classes as an extension activity for the needy children in the neighborhood of the College.
The college lays special emphasis on Physical education and sports. The sports facilities on campus consist of a playground, Basketball and Volleyball Court, indoor games room with table tennis, carom and chess, and a fitness gym. Other facilities like hockey and football fields are shared with sister institutions. The college counts among its alumni, outstanding sports persons like Rahul Dravid and Ashish Ballal. It is to be highly commended, that Arvind Jerome, a student of the final year B.Com, represented the country as goalkeeper of the Indian hockey team (juniors). A number of students have represented the University and the State at National level competitions in various disciplines and have brought glory to the college.
The college itself does not provide hostel accommodation, but the girl students are provided lodging in the catholic hostels close to the college. A number of Companies visit the college for Campus Interviews and job placements for students through campus interviews have been exceptionally good.
CRITERION - V: STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION
Student progression is quite satisfactory and the dropout rate is very low. The past percentage during the last five years ranges between 90% to 98%. Around twenty percent of the students opt for further studies after passing out from the college. These students generally pursue the Chartered Accountancy Course and MBA programmes.
The student placement has been highly satisfactory, at nearly a hundred percent. Over the last five years, almost all students seeking job have been placed through Campus recruitment. The acclaim and commendations, which the college has received from various quarters, has been very motivating in meeting the ever-increasing expectations of the stakeholders. The college has also been responsive to the significant changes and developments in the field of Higher Education.

The students are given a Handbook which includes information relating to aims and objectives of the college, mission and vision of the college, the Josephite ideals, college regulation, syllabus of various subjects, the admission process, rules for awarding of prizes, current years calendar of events, list of holidays, and list of teaching and non-teaching staff members, staff duties and names of the class mentors along with contact numbers.
The College has tied up with 'Career Plan', a leading Institute for providing coaching to students who desire to take up MBA entrance exams, like CAT, MAT etc.
Financial support is made available in the form of Scholarships received from the Government for SC/ST Students, for physically disadvantaged, for children of Ex-Service Men and National Merit Scholarship. The management also gives fee-concessions and free meals to economically poor students, financial assistance for research to deserving students, for traveling expenses, procuring books and reading material and documentation expenses. The College has appointed two full time counselors to work with students for individual and group Counseling activities.
The College has a long list of illustrious Alumni who have displayed outstanding leadership abilities and competence in diverse fields. An active and vibrant alumni association contributes actively to the welfare of the students in the form of scholarships, career counseling and placement of final year students. They also organize annual get together and fun events like, the Past v/s Present Students cricket match and the mini-convocation.
The Academic, Cultural and Sports Councils organize all extra-curricular activities like inter-class and inter-collegiate events, competitions and festivals. The language associations, the Hindi Parishad and the Kannada Sangha also conduct inter-class literary and cultural events to provide opportunity for display and identification of talent in the two vernacular languages. They jointly conduct 'NAKSHATRA' an inter-collegiate bi-lingual literary and cultural festival. The languages departments and the Cultural Council jointly conduct the Inter-Collegiate Theatre festival 'ENACT'. The students bring out a newsletter titled 'WORDSWORTH' and the College annual magazine 'Blue Chip'.
The College campus has limited space for sports and games. The Peer team is informed that the playground facilities of sister institutions are available to the students of this College. However, the team suggests that these informal arrangements may be formalized and the students are informed of the arrangements. \
The Peer team members' interaction with the various stakeholders revealed the high level of satisfaction expressed by the students, the parents and the alumni with the institution's commitment towards promotion of excellence with relevance.
CRITERION - VI: ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT
The College has a well structured management system managed by Jesuit Fathers, of the Society of Jesus, an International religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. The Bangalore Jesuit Education society elects it's Governing Body every year. The Principal of St. Joseph's College of Commerce, as a member of the Governing Body and the correspondent of the college, is delegated with specific powers to execute most of the decisions regarding day-to-day administration of the college. He plays the role of a mentor with regard to planning, decision-making, co-ordination, leadership and other managerial responsibilities and functions of the institution.
The College office is managed by the Superintendent, who under the direction of the Principal, carries out the routine administrative work and liaisons with the Government, University, UGC etc.
The Governing body is responsible for taking major policy decisions. The Principal keeps the Governing Body informed about the decisions through the Rector. The Rector, who is the Head of the institution, has decentralized the decision-making powers to the Principal, Dean, Staff Council and Student Council. There is a conscious effort to involve all the staff members in different capacities to play an active role in the administration and management of the College. Various committees, both statutory and non-statutory have been constituted for carrying out the various tasks of the institution through formulation of policies and implementation. Adequate representation to Staff on the various committees reflects a participatory mode of governance.
The IQAC continuously reviews the functioning of the various department and units and strives to bring in necessary changes as and when required. Due to the initiatives of the IQAC there has been rapid application of IT enabled tools and systems to academic and administrative units to enhance the overall efficiency of the institution.
The Perspective Planning for institutional development is carried out at the Staff council meeting. In addition, there is a Planning committee, which through discussion and deliberation evolves the short term and long term plans for the institution.
The College adheres to its Academic Calendar for conducting various academic activities.
The Budget for the financial year is prepared by the Principal of the College in consultation with the Finance Committee, which is to be approved by the Governing Body. The College spends nearly 47% of the total revenue expenditure on academic services, 20.94% on administration and students welfare, and 16% on other services. The expenditure is allocated as per the recommendations of the Finance Committee.
The Governing body selects an approved Chartered Accountant to conduct the Statutory Audit. The Auditing System comprises of Internal and External Audit. The audit is conducted once in six months during the financial year. The Statutory auditor also acts as an Internal auditor. The monthly statement of Accounts is ratified by the Rector (Vice-President of BJES), after scrutiny by the Internal Auditor of BJES.

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college initiates all the quality enhancement initiatives. Regular meetings of the IQAC are held to help evaluate the effectiveness of various programmes and activities of the College.
Staff welfare programmes include free education for the children of non-teaching staff and contribution by the management towards group insurance of both teaching and non-teaching staff.
The various stakeholders i.e. students, parents, teachers and alumni are regularly consulted and their feedback is sought in matters regarding academic and non-academic issues.
The increasing participation of various stakeholders in the processes of Management and Administration of the College is a clear indication that the College practices a participatory style of Governance.
The Parent-Teacher Interface facilities the process of eliciting feedback from parents in bringing about necessary changes on the campus. The Alumni is also consulted in the decision making processes like formulation of curriculum and conducting of certain extra curricular activities.
A notable practice is the formation of study groups in which the advanced learners help the slow learners in their studies. The practice of having class mentors for interacting with each student individually to know their family and social background thus enabling them to take effective steps to help students face any academic or personal problems is truly remarkable.
Section 3: Overall Analysis
St. Joseph's College of Commerce over the past 34 years of its existence, strived for providing good education in the field of commerce to various sections of the society. It gained good reputation and has been attracting large number of students for enrollment. Apart from providing good education, helping the students to get high ranks in the University Examinations, the college also paid attention in inculcating among the students social concern and character formation. Through co-curricular and extra-curricular, sports and games activities, the college is giving opportunities to the students to exhibit their creative talents and leadership qualities. In the field of sports and games, it produced national players in some areas. The college has a long list of well placed alumni in different fields. Some of them have become successful employers also.
While appreciating the excellent work the college has been doing, the Peer team would like to make the following suggestions for further growth in the years to come.
The peer team suggests that separate boards of studies may be constituted for B.Com, BBM and M.Com.
The college may induct industry experts in Boards of Studies and Academic Council in designing the syllabus to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The College may consider diversifying its course structure further by providing more electives at the III Year B.Com and BBM levels under autonomous pattern.
The college may introduce UG and PG programmes specializing in Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Retail Management, Animation, e-Commerce, Risk and Insurance Management.
More qualified staff may be recruited for the computer center and the Department of Business Management.
The Controller of Examinations' Office needs streamlining inview of autonomous status of the college. There is a need for drafting a clear and comprehensive Manual of Examinations incorporating clear guidelines in all areas pertaining to conduct of examinations, paper setting, valuation and redressal of grievances, if any, in this regard.
The College has reached a stage where it needs to pay greater attention to research. The teachers who have not yet acquired Ph.D may be encouraged to acquire as early as possible. Publication of papers in journals by faculty is to be further encouraged and it is to be insisted upon. Steps may be initiated in different areas to pave the way for greater research culture in the institution.
The faculty may be encouraged to take up Major and Minor Research Projects of UGC, ICSSR etc.
The College may further strengthen the Business Laboratory.
The Management may explore the possibility of establishing hostels for boys and girls coming from outside Bangalore.
The College may explore the possibility of attracting more overseas students.
The Peer team while appreciating the management policy of awarding scholarships for the economically backward students, it suggests that it may explore the possibility of awarding enhanced scholarship amount to the talented poor students to meet the tuition fees.
There is a need for promoting entrepreneurship among students having this potential. This will pave the way for creating job makers instead of job seekers. This can be done by establishing a Center for Entrepreneurship Development and inviting industry people to frequently interact with the students.
The College may also examine the need for establishing an English Language Lab for helping the students coming from urban and rural for enhancing their communication skills.
The College should pay special attention in developing its library further. More number of books and journals are to be acquired. More online journals may also be subscribed. The library timings are to be extended up to 8.00 p.m. in the initial stage and later up to 10.00 p.m.
There is need for entering into more MoUs to strengthen industry interface. The Peer team is happy to know that the Governing body is already seized of this matter.
The Placement Cell may be manned by a professional having close touch with industries and business.
The College may explore the possibility of entering into collaborative agreements with foreign universities and institutions for starting programmes in Management.
The cocurricular and extra curricular activities may be further strengthened.
In the course of interaction with the management, the peer team is informed that in course of time they are planning to acquire a Deemed University Status for their Institutions.
This needs preparation of a Vision Document incorporating short term and long term plans in the years to come. Meanwhile, the college itself may prepare a Vision Document incorporating its academic plans during the next 5 to 7 years to take it to greater academic heights.
With the excellent track record of the College, its commitment and the ambient academic atmosphere prevailing in the institution, the peer team feels that the college has all the potential to reach greater heights in the field of commerce and management education.
