Section I : Introduction
Dayananda Sagar College of Science, Arts and Commerce, Bangalore 560078 is located along with other educational institutions run by the Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Peetha Trust in a Campus occupying an area of 37 acres in the northern part of the Bangalore City. The college thus comes under urban category. The college has its own buildings on the campus for its activities. Though located on an uneven hilly track, the campus has well planned landscaping, roads, buildings for different institutions. There is also an old temple of Siva known as 'Shavige Malleshwara' which is retained as it is and maintained as a place of worship. The main building, housing the principal's and administrative office of the college along with some basic departments, is declared as a heritage building by the management.

Dayananda Sagar College of Science, Arts and Commerce was established in 1978, by Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Peetha Trust, Bangalore. The college is affiliated to Bangalore University and submitted its proposal to the UGC for recognition both under 2(f) and 12(b). The college receives grant-in-aid from State Government and is also a self-financing institution. It is equipped with airy and furnished class rooms, well-equipped laboratory, library, indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The college imparts education at the under graduate level in Science and Commerce, Business Management and Computer Science faculties. The college is also running Post-graduate courses in Business Administration, Biotechnology and Computer Application. The total number of courses offered is ten. The college also introduced job oriented courses like MBA, M.Sc. in Biotechnology and MCA. During the academic year 2003-2004, it admitted a total of 814 students out of which 573 students exclusively admitted to self-financing courses both at U.G. and P.G. level. There are 53 teachers out of which 50 are permanent and three are part-time. Among the permanent faculty two are Ph.D., Degree holders and six M.Phil., degree holders. A team of 39 non-teaching staff helps in running the administration of the college. The college has volunteered for institutional accreditation by National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted its Self Study report. NAAC constituted a Peer team comprising of Prof..A.Gurumurthi (Director, Centre for Distance Education, P.S.Telugu University, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh), as Chairperson, Dr.M.D.Jahagirdar (Director, Institute of Management Studies and Information Technology, Vivekanand College Campus, Aurangabad, Maharastra), as Member Co-ordinator and Prof.K.Sivasankara Reddy (Professor of Psychology, Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh), as Member. Dr.Jagannath Patil, Asst.Advisor, NAAC, Bangalore, has coordinated the Peer team visit on behalf of the NAAC. The Peer team visited the college for two days on 23rd and 24th of July 2004, to asses the institution for accreditation. The Peer team carefully perused and verified the self-study report submitted by the college. During the institutional visit, the Peer team went through all the relevant documents, visited the departments and all infrastructure facilities in the college, interacted, at length, with the Principal, teaching faculty, non-teaching staff, students, parents, management and alumni of the college. Based on the above exercise and keeping in mind seven criteria identified by NAAC, the Peer team has taken up the task of assessment and accreditation of the college.

Section II Criterion-wise Analysis
Criterion I
Curricular Aspects
Students from different parts of India and abroad have been seeking admission into the courses in the college. A wide range of programmes are being offered by the college at the under graduate and post graduate level in various disciplines. Eight optional subjects are covered under B.Sc. Among the career oriented courses at the under graduate level, mention should be made of B.B.M., B.Sc Computer Science, B.C.A., B.Sc (Bio-Tech) and M.Sc (Bio-Tech), MBA and MCA at the post graduate level. Normally, it takes one year for the introduction of a new course in the college. Most of the programmes offered have a definite career orientation. This indicates the responsiveness of the college to social needs. In furtherance of the mission and goals of the college, the contents of the courses sensitize students to contemporary issues. The subjects such as Biotechnology, Computer Science and Master of Business Administration help the rural youth and talented youngsters to hone their skills and gain self- confidence in utilizing their capabilities.

The Peer team feels that the wide range of non-core optional papers available for U.G. and P.G. students, cutting across disciplines, expose them to the changing social and economic scenario.

Criterion II
Teaching, learning and evaluation
Admission to various courses is made in accordance with rules prescribed by the Bangalore University. After admission, the college conducts psychometric tests, group discussions, work-shops. Further, the college conducts remedial courses for S.C. and S.T. students and special personality workshops for BBM/BCA students.

Advance learners are encouraged to participate in various intercollegiate academic competitions and given additional assignments in the form of seminars. They are also made to make use of library facilities liberally to know and acquaint themselves with the recent literature. They are also given special identity cards.

Classroom lectures appear to be the main method of teaching, supplemented by other methods such as teaching through L.C.D. projector, seminars and group discussion, etc. For online teaching there is a centrally installed state of the art, digital classroom to facilitate downloading of Internet lessons.

The maximum number of teaching days per year has been 205. Teaching is being done by 50 full time faculty and 3 temporary and ad-hoc faculty. Periodical tests, tutorials, midterm and preparatory examinations are held to monitor and assess the student programmes and performance. Semester pattern is being followed in all the post-graduate programmes offered by the college. The college introduced semester pattern for the under-graduate courses from the academic year 2004-2005, as per the Bangalore University regulations.

Recruitment of faculty is based on the guidelines of the UGC and state Government. During the last two years 35 teachers have been recruited for courses not covered by Government grants i.e., self-financing courses. The college conducts some training programmes by way of workshops and conferences and field training for the faculty. Nearly all the faculty members were benefitted by the inhouse faculty development programmes conducted during the last two years. In the last two years four teachers participated at the national level seminars and workshops.
The college has also introduced self-appraisal method for evaluating performance of teachers and the students also goes through these and give a feed-back to the teachers.

Criterion III
Research, Consultancy and extension
The college is having healthy academic environment. Involvement of the teachers in the research is found to be meagre, it needs to be encouraged. However, some faculty members are active in research.

The college has NSS unit which organizes extension activities such as aids awareness, mass marriages, community development, etc. Students and faculty members are encouraged by motivating and providing incentives for their performance and they are also encouraged to participate in academically and socially relevant programmes. Many extension activities in cooperation with the N.G.I. and Red Cross Society have been carried out. The college has inter-linkages with Scotland University for research, development and consultancy for Biotechnology students.

The college has established close contact with Government and Non-Government organisations. Community development and health awareness activities are undertaken by the students and staff.

Criterion IV
Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The college campus has an old building housing the under-graduate programmes has a three floor main building which houses the under graduate programmes - B.Sc and B.Com. It has a 17,000 sq.ft plinth area. The Management Block accommodates the MBA, MCA, BBM and BCA departments. The College has a separate building on the campus accommodating the departments of Life Sciences such as Bio-Technology, Zoology, Genetics and Microbiology. This has a plinth area of 9600 sq.ft, in two floors. The department has well-equipped laboratories. The department of Chemistry is accommodated in another building having a laboratory, faculty room and class rooms. The college has separate hostels for boys and girls. An extension counter of a nationalized Bank is also located on the Campus. The college campus has well laid-out black-topped roads linking all the buildings. The parking areas for vehicles are marked. The college campus is well maintained. The college maintains a sports ground for indoor and outdoor games. The college has a central library with 3 floors and in one of the floors books, journals and periodicals are kept for the use of the college students and faculty.

The Departments of Business Management and Computer Science have a library situated in their own building.

The college has a seminar hall and amphitheatre. To help students for easy conveyance two buses are acquired and run by the college.

Criterion V :
Student Support and Progression
The college has infrastructural facilities to enable the students to prosecute their studies in a congenial environment. The college updates and publishes the prospectus annually. Financial aid is available from the state and central governments in the form of fees concessions and scholarships. The college undertakes annual medical check-up. Apart from this, with a fee the students are provided with health insurance annually.

A placement cell located on the campus provides career -guidance and helps the students of the college to get employment. It works under a full time placement officer. The teachers besides teaching also provide counseling services.

The admission is given to the students as per the admission criteria of Bangalore University and the State government. Overseas students are provided with information regarding accommodation, welfare programmes lodging and board facilities and police clearance. Recreational facilities to students include indoor and outdoor games, audio-visual facilities, etc. On an average 80% of the students appear for qualifying examination after fulfilling the conditions laid down by the University. The success rate of MCA and MBA students in the examinations is over 96%. With regard to success rate in the examinations of Bangalore University, this College is one among the top five colleges in MCA and MBA. The dropout rate of the students is 3.10%. The students who complete the MBA and BBM find placement in multi-national companies. One of the former MCA students is credited to have developed a free Web Browser which has about 5000 downloads around the world, has been rated as the best software on many international sites.

Criterion VI
Organization and Management
The College is having an internal Coordinating and monitoring mechanism. The Governing Body at present looks after the college organization, appointments and the maintenance of the campus. The college management committee meets once in 3 months to discuss and decide on the internal matters and issues pertaining to the college. In case of emergency, special meetings are convened.

The college has an academic council which consists of the Principal as convener and all the heads of the departments as members. The college has a mechanism to look after the work efficiency of the non-teaching staff. The academic calendar provides information regarding academic activities like college re-opening, examination dates and so on.

The college is being run on sound financial lines. The college has an internal auditing system, besides this auditing is being done by external agencies.

The members of the teaching and non-teaching staff are provided with the facility of loan from outside agencies and free education is being provided to the wards of non-teaching staff. Major purchases of the college are effected through the procedure of calling quotation and the final approval of the management is sought.

Criterion VII :
Healthy practices
The college has a mechanism to look-after the quality in teaching and learning.

The college has divided its programmes into the following groups :
Center for Management and Computer studies

Center for Life Sciences - Biotechnology, Genetics, Zoology, Microbiology and Biochemistry.

Graduate Programmes - B.Com and B.Sc.

This is providing scope for closer supervision and monitoring for achieving good results.

The college is following admission procedure as per University and State Government rules and regulations. Each department is provided with computers and other infrastructure facilities. Internet facility is available to students and faculty of each department at the departmental level and also in the library. The students have Internet with browsing and downloading facility. The department of business management has been sensitizing the college management to the latest managerial concepts and computerization

The college has centralized facility such as Amphi-theatre, Electronic class room and seminar halls.

The college has a placement cell helping the students in career guidance and placement.

The college administration and the library are computerized.

The P.G. Students are encouraged to take up collaborative project work under the supervision of faculty in various institutions. Important functions like Inaugural Function, College Day, Annual Sports Meet, Literary Day, Founder's Day, Convocation Day and others are being organized by the college with the active participation and collaboration of the students.

The college through its placement cell is maintaining close rapport with the industries for placement and training of the students of MBA and MCA departments.

The College has a Memorandum of Understanding with Scotland University for Biotechnology programme.

The College offers MBA, MCA, Biotechnology, BBA and BCA programmes under self -financing scheme. This augments the financial position of the institution.
The college has been offering value-based education through special help-line classes.

For the sake of disadvantaged students, special remedial programmes are being offered.

For all round personality development of the students, the college hosts HRD awareness programmes, NSS activities, Yoga classes, Career Guidance, Games and Sports, etc. A centrally located canteen caters to the needs of students and the staff by providing eatables at subsidized and notified rates.

By offering various academic programmes, including the latest ones, the college translates its objectives into reality.

The college attracts students from far off places in India and aboard by creating a website of its own.

Section III : Overall Analysis and Suggestions
The Management and faculty are favourably disposed of toward providing quality education. Physical facilities and academic atmosphere are being created to realize the stated objectives and mission of the institution. However, the following suggestions are offered in order to continue and strengthen the tempo of activities.

i) The library needs to be strengthened.

ii) Students may be provided facilities like board and lodging at subsidized and affordable rates.

iii) More physical space may be earmarked for sports and games. The students may be encouraged to actively participate in sports and games at the National and State level.

iv) The departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics may be brought under one roof and more infra-structural facilities may be provided to these departments.

v) The departments of MBA, MCA and Bio-technology may offer short duration certificate and diploma courses.

vi) Outreach programmes may be organized by the Bio-technology department for the benefit of rural people.
