BU plans to ban public motor bikes on the campus

Bangalore: Simple infrastructure with simple technologies can help build sustainable transport model. The Bangalore University (BU) followed this agenda in their Namma Cycle workshop (Public Bicycle Sharing Project) that was held in Central College campus on Saturday.

The university, for the first time, has launched the Public Bicycle Sharing Project in association with Ride A Cycle Foundation (RACF). It was an initiative to encourage students to use bicycles as a means of commute, thereby creating a sustainable transport model.Cycle Rental Stations will be sprawled all over the 1,100 acres of the varsity, wherein students can pick up and drop a cycle. Additional facilities like seating areas, locking-unlocking of stations, etc will also be provided. The stock stations will have a provision for shipping 200 cycles approximately.Students can now easily move from one department to other and to bus stands on rented cycles. The bicycles will be provided at a nominal rental charge of Re 1 to encourage more students to take up the facility.Addressing the media, the Bangalore University vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev said that as a step to make the BU campus environment-friendly, the university is mulling over banning of public motor bikes inside the campus.

Also, bicycle-sharing systems have emerged as a trend for sustainable commuting, of late; Hence the university and RACF have taken the initiative.
A total of Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh have been invested in this project. Bicycle sharing with respect to Indian cities had been the major focus of discussion, and everyone was encouraged to take part in this green initiative.

"We are left with no choice but to walk as auto rickshaws are expensive. Cycling is a sensible idea," said a BU student. At present, the architecture students are designing the temporary cycle rental spaces.People are supportive and enthusiastic about this new scheme that is being implemented at the varsity campus and are eager to witness it before they leave the campus.
