Overview of BIT Mesra
The Institute For over five decades, BIT Mesra (located 16 kms from Ranchi, the Jharkhand state-capital) has been engaged in nurturing minds through a rich heritage of academic excellence. Essentially a hub of bustling student activities, the beautiful campus has been a second-home to thousands of students in their journey to challenge the times. Established in 1955 by visionary-industrialist Mr. B.M. Birla, it is today one of the most premier engineering destinations in India.

Established in 1995 with the objective of providing quality education through innovative programmes and practices, BIT Extension Centre Jaipur is today one of the leading institutes of Rajasthan in the field of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Management. The Jaipur Campus functions under the academic guidance of the parent University at Mesra, Ranchi in terms of the academic curriculum, calendar as well as the semester examinations. The driving principle for the institute is that academic excellence can be achieved through an ideal incorporation of technology and innovative management practices with relevant professional exposure. With this in mind, campus started by offering PG level programmes in computer science and computer applications. Since then the range of programmes as well as the facilities have expanded to offer a wide range of academic programmes both UG and PG level.

Administrative Structure
BIT, Mesra is a Deemed University under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. Act 1956. The Board of Governors is responsible for the main functions and overall supervision of activities. It comprises representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri G.P. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors while the Governor of the state of Jharkhand officiates as the Institutes Chancellor.Theres a Technical Council that decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Accreditation of BIT Mesra
BIT Mesra has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) established by the UGC and AICTE respectively.

International Ventures
The Institute has made significant forays into international academics by becoming a part of international ventures and tie-ups. BIT Mesra has collaborative arrangements with Universities in the USA, UK and Canada. It is also an active member of the EAGER NETWIC Project under the Asia Link programme of European Commission. This is to establish a world-class academic network of higher education in the rapidly growing field of Wireless and Mobile Communication between the five partner Universities.

Department of Architecture
Introduction
The Department of Architecture was established at BIT Mesra in the year 1993, in keeping with the multifarious scope of Architecture as the art and science of designing spaces and adding value to a meaningful, built environment. It is a subject which is a combination of faculties of engineering, science as well as arts. The programme is a balanced combination of all these streams, yet follows a unique pedagogical methodology that is its hallmark.

The course structure is poised between theoretical knowledge and its practical application with ample application-based lab subjects evenly distributed throughout the syllabus. The practical orientation of working in an actual office is also taken care of in the Practical Training subject in the final year of the course. Students also get a scope to exercise the applicability of the entire course learning in the Final Year Thesis dissemination. Architecture students find rewarding employment in planning, design and construction industries. Many pursue higher stuides in India and abroad in the fields of City Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Conservation, Construction Management - to name a few.

Programmes
The department offers a five year Bachelor of Architecture course, admission to which is cconformed as per the Regulations of Council of Archiecture, India. The department also offers the degree of Master of Urban Planning, approved by AICTE and ITPI. The Department of Architecture invites research applications throughout the year and currently eight scholars are enrolled in its Ph.D. programme.

Collaborative Endeavours
BIT is the Resource Institute for the State of Jharkhand for Disaster Management programmes. The architecture department had jointly organized with the Department of Civil engineering four short-term courses for National Capacity Building Programme for Engineers and Architects in Earthquake Risk Management (NCBPEERM). The department is also closely associated with training institutes like Sri Krishna Institute of Public Administrators (ATI), Ranchi and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi. Faculty members of the department regularly visit these institutes to deliver lectures in varied subjects related to Architecture, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Disaster Management, GIS, Steel Structure and the like.

ABACUS (ISSN: 0973-8339)
Since 2006, the Department publishes a bi-annual journal on Architecture, Conservation and Urban Studies named ABACUS. The journal is refereed by an international panel of eminent architects and planners from the field of academics and industry.

had visited the Department of Pharm. Sciences in last January 2010 and had appreciated the infrastructure and expertise available at the Department. Dr.B.N.Sinha, while visiting the Institute of Prof. Rolf at the University of Luebeck Germany, discussed the possibility of having a Centre of Antiviral Research at BIT, Mesra. His proposal was appreciated and many other scientists also wished to cooperate in this venture. This Centre at BIT Mesra will attract the international interdisciplinary scientific community.

Library Resources
The BIT Central Library serves as a model of an evolving and dynamic facility in technical learning since 1955. The library, as an established knowledge hub that is conveniently accessible by those associated with the University, has a major contribution in making BIT an internationally top ranked Academic and Research driven institution. The Librarys collection comprises hybrid resources (Print and Electronic) in the filed of science and technology, engineering, pharmacy, management and hotel management. The Library also has a separate Internet section consisting of a number of networked terminals for providing recent and most comprehensive access to e-journals and other e-reference resources to the faculty, students and staff under Intranet and Internet environment. The Central library has automated all its routine activities through library software called LIBSYS and also extended the scope of various services like CD-ROM database search, OPAC and Web based OPAC

Digital Library Section
The library even has digital library section where the teaching faculty/ students/ research scholars can access the online and offline electronic resources. The Central Library being a member of AICTE INDEST consortium provides online access to IEEE/IEL, ASME, ASCE journals. The institute has recently subscribed to ACM and Science Direct journals, while several online journals are made available through the UGC Infonet scheme

CAD LAB
CENTRAL CAD LABORATORY
The CAD Laboratory is a central facility of the institute where all undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty members- can work with the sophisticated 2-D and 3-D design and analysis software. They can learn to use the latest software and carry out their research work. The CAD Laboratory has a total number of 70 computers (desktops and workstations) with the latest configurations connected with a high-end server through switched networking.

Most of the software have been acquired with a good number of user licenses to meet the needs of a large number of students and researchers. The Laboratory is kept open from morning till night for the benefit of the users. Internet facility is also available in the laboratory for the better use of the software by the high end users.

Central Computing Facility (CCF)
The Central Computing Facility (CCF) forms an important component of the Institutes infrastructure, providing a wide spectrum of services to the students as well as faculty and staff involved in research and other academic activities. All students have various computer science papers in their courses. The CCF provides the support for them to have a hands-on feel of what they learn in the classrooms and enhance their computer skills. The CCF also supports research activities undertaken in the Institute.

The CCF comprises of seven laboratories (of the Department of CSE and the Department of IT) housing approximately 400 computers having the very latest configuration. The wide range of software includes C, C++, Java, Ora AutoCAD, MATLAB, Macromedia Flash, 3-D Studio Max, Photoshop, Prolog, LISP, Rational Rose, etc. All syste are networked and anyone occupying a terminal can access resources available on the network, barring security restrictions. Students also learn how to harness the capabilities of a network. A special place of pride in the CCF is occupied by the PARAM- 10000 super computer, which was gifted to the Institute by C-DAC, in recognition of the Institutes commitment towards quality higher education and research. The PARAM supports a large number of projects that require parallel processing and multi processor capabilities.

Entral Instrumentation Facility
The Central Instrumentation Facility, equipped with high value sophisticated instruments, has been created in order to cater to the needs of different departments and for maximum utilisation of instruments. The facilities are extensively used by Post Graduate Students, Doctoral Research Scholars and Sponsored Projects for Advanced Research. This facility is also extended to External Organisations, mainly academic institutions of the region on nominal chargeable basis. Presently, around 32 Doctoral Research Scholars from the Applied Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, Applied Physics, Biotechnology, Production Engineering, Polymer Engineering and Pharmaceutical Sciences are working regularly in the lab.

For internal (BIT) samples the student/ faculty member has to be filled up the specific form for the instrument, which is then signed by the respective departmental head during submission of the samples. The charges are deducted from the annual research budget of the specific department or project fund (if any). New Vice Chancellor for BIT-Mesra

The Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi got a permanent vice chancellor (VC) after a gap of one-and-half years with Ajay Chakrabarty on Tuesday assuming the post. According to a BIT press statement, Chakrabarty was earlier Dean of Electronics and Communications Engineering at IIT Kharagpur with which he was associated for three decades. He was also associated with the University of Syracuse, USA.

Chakrabarty is an expert in the field of communications, antenna and microwave engineering. He has been the recipient of INSA-COASTED Fellowship, the URSI Young Scientist Award Scheme and the recipient of SEMCE (I) Award for contribution in teaching and research. He is also the vice chairman of the Society of EMC Engineers, India.
P.K. Barai was acting VC of BIT-Mesra for the last one-and-half years.

Introduction

It functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a high power Board of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri G.P. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council decides the academic policy of the Institute.

BIT became the very first technical University to establish overseas extension centers in the year 2000. Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Ranchi, which was established in 1955, is a deemed University. BIT Ranchi was the first Institute to establish a Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry in the year 1964.

BIT mESRA (Ranchi) became the first technical University to establish overseas extension centers in the year 2000. It is one of the few Universities to be accorded a Super Computer at the core of its ultramodern IT infrastructure.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering, for the benefit of officers working in various Ranchi based public sector undertakings and private industries such as, MECON, SAIL, HEC, CIL, CMPD1. SBL, UMIL., nationalized banks, etc, who wished to upgrade their qualifications. Part-time evening courses were offered for first the MT., then subsequently the MBA, MCA and DCA courses, with laboratory classes being conducted on Sundays and holidays at the Mesra campus. This Centre is ;now named the Lalpur Extension Centre.

In 1997 the started the full time courses, B.Sc. Computer Science and B.Sc. Electronics courses for girls, and in 1998 the BCA course also for girls only. The fact that these were extremely successful led in 1999 to extra shifts were added to run the BCA course for boys also. [n 1999, M.Sc. Information technology and M.Sc. Electronics and Telecommunication courses were introduced. for girls only. Currently the Lalpur Extension Centre has over 1768 students on its rolls of which almost 560 are post graduate students.

History

The Birla Institute of Technology popularly known as BIT was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, which is now in Jharkand state of the Republic of India. The institute was founded by the Philanthropist- Industrialist Mr. B M Birla with a vision to be recognized as a world-class learning institution for engineering and technology by providing the highest-quality academic programmes that foster student development and connect knowledge, practice, and outstanding scholarly research.

The Institute offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate as well as Doctoral level programmes in Engineering & Technology, Applied Sciences, Remote Sensing, Computer Applications , Information Science, Bio-Medical Instrumentation, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Business Management & Hotel Management & Catering Technology.

B I T is a 'Deemed University' under Sec. 3 of the U G C Act 1986. It functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a high power Board of Governors, comprising the representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U G C , the State Government, The Chancellor, the A I C T E , The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Campus

The main campus of the Institute at Mesra is located 16 kilometers from Ranchi in a 780-acre (3.2 km2) setting at the confluence of the rivers Jhumar and Suvarnarekha. The Mesra campus is entirely residential, providing accommodation to over 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and about 550 members of faculty and staff. The infrastructure also includes research laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, playground, gymnasium and a central library with over 1,00,000 books, journals and electronic databases.

Information

The Birla Institute of Technology was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, by the Philanthropist - Industrialist Mr. B M Birla. During initial years, Institute was affiliated to Patna University till 1960 and then to Ranchi University. BIT was declared a Deemed University in 1986 vide Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 under notification No. F. 9-2/83-U.3 of August 28, 1986.

BIT has many firsts in its credit which have been replicated by other Institutes later on. BIT was the very first Institute in India to establish a Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry in the year 1964.BIT also introduced the concept of Small Industries Entrepreneurs' Park and became the first institute in the country not just to provide 'nursery sheds' and central designing and workshop facilities to young entrepreneurs, but also to facilitate the initial project funding. In line of the above view, Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRDO) was set up in 1970 as a launching pad for small manufacturing enterprises run by technical graduates of BIT. A few companies born from this concept are Meditron, Alcast etc. This idea was appreciated by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and spread to other leading institutes of India such as IITs by the Government as a concept of Science and Technological Entrepreneurs Park (STEP). The first STEP was approved and located in BIT Mesra. The Entrepreneurship Development Cell was founded in the year 2007 by students Amit Chaudhary and Ashutosh Malviya of Allahabad with Dr. B.M.Karan as Mentor to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship among students. To add financial strength to this effort, BIT has set up SIDBI Center for Innovation and Incubation (SCII) by an arrangement with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to provide a limited period of time to new entrepreneurs, start up companies, and technology based organizations, to facilitate Research & Development operations in areas of interest with the faculty of the institute.BIT became the very first technical University in India to establish an Overseas Extension Centre - at Bahrain, in the year 2000. It is one of the few Universities in India to be accorded a Super Computer (PARAM 10000 at the core of its ultramodern IT infrastructure.

The Institute along with its extension centres at present has more than 10,000 students enrolled for different Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. It also has more than 150 registered students for the Ph.D. Programmes.

Eligibility:
Undergraduate:
To be eligible, the candidate should have passed Higher Secondary Examination in the Physics, Mathematics and English or other two subjects as per the AIEEE norms with minimum 60% marks.

Post Graduate:
ME / M Tech
The aspirants should have cleared their Graduation with minimum 60% marks (45% for SC/ST) from any recognized University or institute. For Sponsored Candidates, 55% marks are required and GATE qualifiers are preferable.

M Sc
To be eligible, the candidate must have Undergraduate degree from any recognized university or equivalent with minimum 55% of marks (45% for SC/ST).

MCA
Under the Eligibility criteria the candidate should have passed 10+2 with Maths or Graduation with Maths and Statistics.

MBA
The candidate must have sit in CAT examination and he or she must have Bachelor Degree or equivalent from any stream. For the BSc. BA , B.Com candidates, they should have 55% marks (for SC/ST 45%). The candidates from the BBA and other gradate program, they must have scored 55% marks (for SC/ST 45%). Regarding with , the candidate must have minimum 40 (25 for SC/ST).

To get admission, the aspirants have to go through the AIEEE held by the CBSE and Central Counseling organizes by the Central Counseling Board (CCB).

For the course of ME/MTech, the selection of the candidate is based on the GATE scores & interviews (for GATE candidates) and Institute Entrance Test & personal interviews (for non-GATE candidates).

To get admission, the selection of the candidate is based on the scores in Institute Online Entrance Test (BIT-MET) and Counseling/Interviews.

MCA
The admission in this course is taken out by the online entrance test which is followed by the counseling.

MBA
The selection of the Candidate in this program is based on the total Percentile Score in the CAT.
