Lady Hardinge doctors on strike, patients suffer

New Delhi: Resident doctors of the Lady Hardinge Medical College and Sucheta Kriplani hospital in the city went on an indefinite strike on Thursday after one of their colleagues was allegedly beaten up by another employee of the hospital.

The strike by the doctors demanding strict action against the employee put patients at the hospital to severe inconvenience.Over 300 resident doctors called off work on Thursday and began protesting in front of the medical superintendents office demanding adequate security and stringent action against the Group D employee who beat up one of the resident doctors.

A resident doctor and a driver with the hospital had a quarrel over treatment of a patient at around 2 pm on Wednesday which turned ugly. Following this, doctors had called off work for over four hours on that day.
Mother of an ailing child, who came to meet a doctor, said: I was asked by a doctor with the Orthopaedic department to come today. We have come all the way from Hyderabad. It is disappointing that we are not able to meet the doctor.

Though the Out Patient Department was shut, the emergency is being managed by associate professors and other senior members of the hospital.
Dr Rajiv Kumar, a resident doctor, said, We had already declared yesterday that medicos would go on an indefinite strike if immediate action is not taken against the erring employee.

We want registration of an FIR in this regard and action should be taken against the employee who dared to raise his hands at our doctor, he said.

Last October, doctors had gone on a strike demanding dismissal of an employee who had allegedly manhandled a post-graduate student.

Doctor attempts suicide at lhmc

A resident doctor at Lady Hardinge Medical College here allegedly attempted suicide on Wednesday by jumping from the terrace of the house surgeon building of the hospital.

He suffered severe head injuries and fractures in the body and is now undergoing treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
The incident occurred at around 7.15 am, a senior official with the Lady hardinge Medical College said.
This boy was found lying in a pool of blood next to the house surgeon building. Passersby said that he jumped from the terrace of the building. The police is trying to find out the reason behind this ghastly attempt, he said.
He is Naseer, a junior resident doctor with the gynaecology department. All rumours that he attempted suicide because he was not allowed to go on leave is completely baseless. We have found that he has not applied for leave till now.
Dr Deepika Agarwal, associate professor, AIIMS trauma centre neurosurgery department said, His condition is critical but stable. He has severe head injuries and fractures in the chest and other injuries too. We are monitoring his condition.

Boy drowns in tank at Lady Hardinge college

NEW DELHI: Om Prakash Chaddha has seen people die. For over 30 years, the 56-year-old has been an incharge at the mortuary of Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital. But on Wednesday, his mortuary received the body of a nine-year-old. It was that of his own grandson, Monty.

Police found the body floating in an uncovered water tank dug out by a construction firm engaged in building additional staff quarters for Lady Hardinge hospital and Kalawati Saran Childrens Hospital. Monty was apparently playing near the tank-just 180 metres away from it-and accidentally fell into it.

Some other children were playing near the tank. They cried out my son was drowning. We rushed to the spot but the water was at least 10 feet deep. He died in front of my eyes, said Tannu Tara, the bereaved mother.

Residents claimed that the local RWA - of Telegraph Square - had written to the director of LHMC on March 23 pointing out the risks in keeping the tank uncovered. The letter had also stated that the earthmovers had broken many sewer and water supply lines and the open holes were a threat to residents.

The family alleged that after Montys death, the construction firm covered all open holes and the tank as well. Where were they yesterday? Why were there no security guards at the spot? an inconsolable Chaddha said.

The Mandir Marg police said they have registered a case of death due to negligence. We registered a case under IPS Section 304 (A), said a senior police officer, adding that the construction company has been named in the FIR.

Police said they will begin recording the statements of the project managers and workers present at the spot from Friday.

Meanwhile, the hospital association has now forwarded a charter of three demands before the LHMC director. Besides the officials of the construction company, hospital authorities involved in the accident must be booked. Compensation to the tune of Rs 10 lakh should be paid to the parents and the company involved must be blacklisted from being involved in any further projects in the area, said a member.
