Media coverage of Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College for Women, New Delhi Delhi, Delhi

Girl with 92 per cent kills herself over LSR seat

GURGAON: Another horrible death — of a bright 19-year-old girl who scored 92% in her Class XII board exams — has yet again underlined the fatal consequences of achievement-pressure on young people today.

Kritika Khanna, who finished at Shri Ram School in Gurgaon this year, flung herself to death on Friday night from her 11th-floor balcony, apparently because she failed to be admitted to Lady Shriram College.

''Her family members did not divulge much, but said that she was suffering from depression and had got withdrawn,'' said a police officer.

Police said that Kritika was on the balcony of the family's apartment in DLF City's Regency Park talking to her brother and mother, a teacher at Shri Ram school. ''All of a sudden, the girl took the deadly plunge from the railing of the balcony. It took a while for her family to realize what happened,'' said Jagdish Prasad, SHO Sector-29 police station. Shri Ram School officials were not available for comment.

Peer pressure seemed to be the main reason behind the suicide, police said. ''Her parents have told us while most of her friends got admission in LSR, she got admission in Jesus and Mary College in psychology honours. This led to her taking the extreme step.''

Journalism course at LSR

The media boom that our country experienced has made many students consider Journalism as a lucrative career. To cater the growing demand of media professionals, many Journalism courses have been introduced in various colleges in the past ten years. One of the most sought-after colleges for Journalism is Lady Shri Ram College.

Hundreds of students apply for LSRs BA Journalism (Honours) course, which has become very popular among students who want to build a good base in Journalism.
We are looking for students who are aware, well-read and who want to make a mark in the field of Journalism. Also, they need to have a flair for writing which is crucial in this field, says Kanika Khandelwal, media-co-ordinator of LSR.

Not surprisingly, the entrance exam is considered to be a hard nut to crack. The paper is generally divided into two sections: current affairs and creative-essay writing. The former consists of multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks on anything that is relevant on a given day.
The latter section aims to test the awareness and the socio-political-cultural perspective of the person. It is different from an English essay in that it requires students to write in a journalistic and not always a literary style. The exam is scheduled for July 19 from 2-4 pm

LSR has around 20-22 seats in this course and its entrance exams makes it clear that the college is very selective about the students that enroll for the course.

I always wanted to get into Journalism and LSR is one of the best colleges. So Im giving the exam and I hope I clear it though Ive heard it is tough, says Tanya Roy, a humanities student.

LSR is probably the only college that has kept the cut-offs for its entrance exams very low. The Journalism cut-off is 79 per cent and from this year onwards, the college has lowered its cut-off for English from 75 to 70 per cent.
We have kept the cut-offs low so that even those students who have low marks but an interest in the subject sit for the exam. After all marks dont define how you do later in your life, she says. But she also warns students on one thing. Just because we have our cut-offs low, we dont want students to consider this as a back-door entry in this college, adds Kanika.

Cracking fundas
Reading newspapers and magazines is a must. You have to have a good general knowledge.

No need to worry about the essay writing section but current affairs need to be brushed up

Every aspiring Journalism student has to be aware of the things happening around
Now to all the Journalism aspirants, all we can say is: brush up your creative writing skills and know the current affairs right and you will surely make it.

Chandigarh toppers eye Delhi University colleges

CHANDIGARH: Aiming to grab a seat in the countrys top colleges affiliated to Delhi University (DU), a host of city toppers, who scored well in Class XII (commerce) board exams, are applying for their dream institutes.

With DU beginning its common admission process from June 4, students can also fill forms online for all colleges.

Although the cut-off for the best colleges is 95-96%, I am applying for Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College for Women, Hindu College and Shri Ram College of Commerce. I will also keep the other options open and apply for Chandigarh colleges, says Shreya Oberoi, who scored 93.2% in Class XII commerce stream.

Available on a payment of Rs 100 at www.du.ac.in, students can submit the form online too without attaching any extra documents.

On top of my preference are Hindu College, Hans Raj College and LSR... I know it is not easy to get a seat in these institutes because of the cut-throat competition, says Sadgi Bhatia, who scored 95.4% in Class XII.

Nishatha Vats, another city student who scored 93.4% in Class XII, says, I want to join a DU college as it will offer better opportunities and greater exposure in my stream. I have been keeping a tab on the admission process. Even last year, I was following their cut-offs. I want to take admission in the countrys best commerce college, though I will apply for a few other colleges as well, says Mehak Bansal, who scored 95.8% in Class XII.
