Students in a fix as PU fails to soften stand on psychology course in SD College - Non affiliation of course

Students appearing for their final year BA (Hons) Psychology exam were in for a shock when they were informed that the question paper had not reached the examination centre. Both Panjab University officials and authorities at SD College, Sector 32, kept passing the buck leaving the students in a fix.

At 9 am when the students reached the college to appear for the exam they were told that no question paper had been received by the college. However, the paper was later arranged around 11 am by when all the students had already left.

Talking to Newsline, a student Neha said, 'This is our most crucial year as most of us plan to pursue an MSc psychology degree but now nothing seems possible. We should have atleast been intimated in advance about the college not having affiliation so that we could look for other options.'

Echoing similar thoughts there were others who said they were being made to suffer due to the indifferences between the college and PU authorities. Sources also claim that the college has been fined Rs 25,000 for starting the course without affiliation which is yet to be paid.

While the university maintains that the college does not have any affiliation to start the course, college authorities held PU authorities responsible for the entire episode. Talking to Newsline, principal of SD College Dr A C Vaid said, 'The students had appeared for the exam last year as well. Why did PU allow them to take the exam then. The university keeps changing their own rules and I will not let the students suffer.' Dr Vaid further added that the college will not be paying any fine as it has done nothing wrong.

Denying all allegations, PU authorities said the college had been intimated earlier that they don't have affiliation for the course but they failed to take appropriate action.

Examination Controller Professor A K Bhandhari said: 'The college does not have proper affiliation and we were asked by the college branch not to send them the question paper for the particular subject.' However, the authorities failed to explain as to why the question papers were sent later. Also, no decision has been taken yet on whether a re-exam will be held.

SD College files appeal against withdrawal of affiliation to MCA course

Sunday, Feb 14, 2010
After the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) withdrew affiliation to run the MCA course, SD College has filed an appeal. Panjab University had asked the college to send all the 80 students enrolled under the course to the varsity and also deposit the entire course fee collected from the students. SD College, however, has refused to agree saying it was following regulations according to which they have filed an appeal and any other measure can be taken only after their appeal is decided. College Principal Dr A C Vaid said, 'The university has no power to ask us to send students to them or give them the fee. We are continuing with the course and have filed an appeal. We are sure that our affiliation would be reinstated'.

Non-teaching staff of colleges demand revised salaries

More than 150 non-teaching employees from all aided colleges of the city participated in the protest demanding implementation of the new pay scales.
