JNTUH introduces jumbling system for B.TechHYDERABAD: The Jawaharlal Nehru technological university, Hyderabad (JNTUH) has decided to introduce the jumbling system for the first year BTech annual examinations fromthis academic year.
The jumbling will replace the existing SET system. With the SET system, students used to write their annual and semester examinations in their own college. With the new system, the B Tech students will write their exams in colleges other than their own. The B. Tech first year examinations will commence from May 28.
According to sources, the university is also planning to extend the the jumbling system to all the four years of BTech semester examinations, from the next academic year onwards. Except the first year, the semester examinations of all the other three years are either underway or have just finished. Since 2003, the SET system was in place in all the BTech semester and annual examinations.
The university used to prepare four question papers in which more than 90 per cent of the questions appearing in one paper would not appear in the other.
The first question paper would be given to the first person in the row and the fifth person in the row would get the same question paper.
As the university was conducting semester and annual examinations in the students own college, it had been following this system to prohibit malparctice.
With the university receiving many complaints about the system, the authorities scrapped it following an expert committee recommendations.
The serious complaint was that there was a huge variation in the scoring of marks from one student to the other, with the existing system.
As 90 per cent of questions were different from one paper to the other, the university could not maintain standards in all four question papers.
The result was that, students who were performing equally in classes used to get substantial difference in marks scored.
Speaking to Express, director of evaluation, JNTUH, Dr A Govardhan said that after receiving complaints, the university had appointed an expert committee to look into the issue.
Following recommendations of the expert panel, it was decided to introduce the jumbling system for first year B Tech students from this academic year.
He said that they have communicated this to all affiliated colleges.
Colleges give attendance for Rs 15KNearly 100 engineering colleges affiliated to JNTU-Hyderabad were found to have been involved in an attendance scam. The college managements would tell students that they could not appear for examinations because they were short on attendance. They then collected up to Rs 15,000 from each student to get the him-her exempted from the attendance requirement.
JNTU-Hyderabad had int-roduced the rule regarding attendance in order to imp-rove standards in engineering education. But some co-llege managements exploited this rule and used it to extort money from stude-nts. JNTU will issue show-cause notices to principals of the engineering colleges concerned on the issue.
Nearly 2.3 lakh students have registered for the ongoing B.Tech semester exams. Of them, nearly 2,500 students were learnt to have been detained by some colleges despite having sufficient attendance. The modus operandi was to exclude the attendance of students who participated in activities such as technology events, sports meets, national seminars, field trips, education trips etc. Some colleges even marked the students as absent when they appeared for the semester exams, mid-term exams, supplementary exams etc., in other colleges, where exam centres were allotted.
Colleges illegally detain students
Though the attendance norms of JNTU-Hyderabad clearly stipulate that students engaged in activities such as sports meets, national seminars, etc., should be marked as present, the managements of colleges affiliated to the university ignored this directive with an eye to fleecing the students later.
The attendance scam came to light when some 110 students detained by DRK College of Engineering and Technology, located on the citys outskirts, recently complained to JNTU officials that the management is forcing them to pay up to Rs 15,000 to get attendance exemption.
JNTU, which inquired into the issue, found that out of 110 students detained, around 60 students have the required attendance and are eligible to appear for the exams. Following this, students and parents from other colleges started approaching JNTU with similar complaints. JNTU has found that nearly 100 of its 300 affiliated colleges have illegally detained students.
When contacted, the JNTU-Hyderabad vice-chancellor, Prof. Rameshwar Rao, said: This is a serious issue. We are investigating thoroughly into the complaints. We will initiate stringent action against the erring colleges. We have already asked the colleges to send the revised attendance sheets of students. Based on that, we are giving opportunity for eligible students to appear for the exams.
The Controller of Exams, Dr A. Govardhan, urged students to lodge complaints with the university against colleges that violate attendance norms and force students to pay the additional fee to get exemption. As per norms, there should be 75 per cent attendance. A 10 per cent concession is given on medical grounds. There is no such provision in the university to get attendance exemption by paying a certain amount. If any college does so, it amounts to cheating. My request to such students is to lodge written complaints against the colleges to enable us to initiate action, he said.
Telangana impact in JNTU: 1,500 students face detentionHundreds of MCA and MBA students studying in JNTU-Hyderabad-affiliated colleges might not be allowed to sit for their semester exams due to lack of sufficient attendance.
While the varsity had relaxed attendance norms for B.Tech students citing closure of colleges for over a month due to the Telangana agitations last year, the same was not extended to MCA and MBA courses offered by the same engineering colleges.
As a result about 1,500 students who had registered for first and third semester exams scheduled to begin from February 6 face the risk of detention as they failed to meet the required attendance of 75 per cent.
Complaining of discrimination by the university, the students said it was not fair as B.Tech students had been allowed to appear for semester exams recently even if they had only 40 per cent attendance.
As per varsity norms, students must have 75 per cent attendance to be eligible to sit for exams. A 10 per cent leeway is allowed on medical grounds, but students with less than 65 per cent attendance are barred from taking the exams.
The students argued that they had not been able to attend classes for 25 days during September and October last year due to the 25-day RTC strike due to Sakala Janula Samme.
Both B.Tech and MCA courses are offered by the engineering colleges. If B.Tech students could not attend classes due to the T-strike, the same is applicable for MCA and MBA students also, said P. Ashwin Kumar, an MCA student.
Why is this discrimination when students of both the B.Tech, MCA and MBA courses attend classes in the same engineering colleges? asked M.D. Nooruddin Farooq, an MCA student.
JNTU officials said they would consider relaxing the attendance norm for MCA and MBA students too. We will take a final decision in a couple of days, said Dr A. Govardhan, exams branch, JNTU-Hyderabad.
Attendance relief for BE studentsIn a relief to about 3,000 engineering students from the Telangana region, who are facing shortage of attendance to appear for semester exams, the Osmania University and JNTU-Hyderabad have decided to give attendance relaxation to compensate for classes missed during the Sakala Janula Samme in September and October. Out of the total 710 engineering colleges in the state, about 315 are located in the T-region and are affiliated to JNTU-Hyderabad and Osmania University.
While about 2,500 students under the purview of JNTU-Hyderabad were declared ineligible to appear for semester exams this month due to less than 75 per cent attendance, another 500 students from OU were found ineligible. OU has decided to add two-week attendance for all its BE- B.Tech students to compensate for the loss of attendance on account of lack of transport facilities during the strike period. However, the university made it clear that the relaxation will be applicable only for this year as a special case and will not be a precedent. Similarly, JNTU-Hyderabad had decided to give 25 per cent attendance relaxation. However, students have to pay a fees of Rs 300 to avail the relaxation. Students with 40 per cent attendance and above will also be allowed to appear for exams. Both the universities were under tremendous pressure from students, parents and public representatives who were demanding attendance relaxation.
OU likely to conduct Eamcet 2012The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, which holds a record of sorts for conducting the Eamcet for the last 13 years in a row, is likely to be replaced by Osmania University this year. OU is keen to conduct Eamcet-2012 in May. The AP State Council of Higher Education will take a decision in the last week of this month. Every December, APSCHE selects the universities that will conduct the common entrance tests such as Eamcet, Ecet, Icet, Edcet, Lawcet, PGECET etc. on its behalf.
Though APSCHE has been entrusting the responsibility of conducting various CETs to different universities on a rotation basis, it has reserved Eamcet for JNTU-Hyderabad for the last 13 years. Both OU and Andhra University have been eyeing the Eamcet, but APSCHE always went with JNTU-Hyderabad. It seems to have changed its mind after the change of guard at JNTU-Hyderabad recently. The state government appointed Prof Rameshwar Rao as the new vice-chancellor in November following the retirement of Prof D.N. Reddy in August.
Relations between APSCHE and Prof Rao soured when he was ousted from his post of convenor of PGECET owing to his inept handling of it. Eamcet is the most popular of the CETs in state, attracting some three lakh students. The university that hosts it, collects around Rs 12 crore by sale of applications.
JNTU detains 2,500 over attendanceAbout 2,500 students in 295 affiliated engineering colleges of JNTU-Hyderabad have been detained for lack of sufficient attendance. These students, who are pursuing the first semester of the second, third and final year of their B.Tech course and are scheduled to appear for the first semester exams from December 1, wont be promoted to the next semester, thus losing an academic year. JNTU norms say the students must have 75 percent attendance to be eligible to appear for the exams. A 10 percent concession is allowed on medical grounds, but students with less than 65 percent attendance are barred from taking the exams.
The detained students have blamed the 25-day RTC strike for their absence from college. However, JNTU officials dismissed the claims that their absence was due to the Sakala Janula Samme. If that was the reason, the number of detained students should be higher as the closure of colleges affects all the students. Out of 2.3 lakh students appearing for exams, only about 2,500 students were detained, said Prof. G.K. Viswanath, Director Acade-mic Planning, JNTU. College managements, students and parents are pressurising the JNTU officials to allow the detained students to take the exams.
No placements in T colleges yetEngineering students in Telangana might lose out on placement opportunities since colleges have been closed since September 13 due to the Sakala Janula Samme. IT majors such as Infosys, TCS, Cognizant etc. have failed to conduct campus recruitment drives in these colleges as the managements had declared holidays due to lack of transportation thanks to the RTC strike from September 18.
Meanwhile, the placement drives in colleges in the Seemandhra region are going on smoothly since August and the managements and students in the T-region fear that their prospects would be hit if there are anymore disruptions. The IT majors have, however, completed placement drives in Tier-I colleges in the T-region like the OU Engineering Colleges, JNTU-Hyderabad, CBIT, Vasavi, Gokaraju Rangaraju, Gitam, Srinidhi, Muffakham Jah, Narayanamma, VNR Vignan Jyothi etc. The placements for final year first semester students began in August thanks to Nasscom which advanced the placement season by four months from this year unlike earlier when it used to begin in December.
The companies were scheduled to begin placement drives in Tier-II colleges like KG Reddy, Aurora, St. Marys, TRR, Holy Mary etc. from September. However, they had to be put off as the colleges were closed. Normally, colleges train students on soft skills, communication skills, mathematical abilities etc. ahead of placement drives. While the managements havent been in a position to conduct any such classes till now, they have decided to conduct classes for Final Year students from Monday when the colleges re-open.
We are requesting the T-activists to allow colleges to function at least during placement season. It is in the interests of T-students, said Mr Krishna Reddy, chairman of KG Reddy group of colleges.
JNTU students to list details of showroomsArchitecture students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University have taken up the task of preparing a comprehensive inventory of commercial establishments along with the size of neon and glow sign advertisement boards displayed on shops in the city.
Architecture students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University have taken up the task of preparing a comprehensive inventory of commercial establishments along with the size of neon and glow sign advertisement boards displayed on shops in the city.
The inventory covers counting the number of commercial establishments, taking photographs of the shops and showrooms, measuring the area, describing the nature of trade and business activity, compiling door numbers shop-wise, and also measuring the size of the advertisements.
Based on the details in the inventory, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will levy trade licence fee and advertisement tax on the traders. The inventory will serve as a long-term guide book for tax assessment and other purposes.
We requested the JNTU authorities and they agreed to let 60 students to do the job. It is being done as part of their course project. The GHMC will pay them honorarium and also give project completion certificates, said the GHMC commissioner, Mr M.T. Krishna Babu.
The students have been divided into different groups and each group is headed by expert surveyors appointed by the civic body. The JNTU students will also prepare a list of trades and business establishments that are presently outside the ambit of trade licence fee.
Earlier traders had gone to court against the municipal corporation for appointing two private agencies to collect advertisements tax on neon and glow sign boards. The two agencies were accused of levying advertisement tax indiscriminately. Later, the High Court asked that all advertisement tax shall be collected on the bills and receipts of the GHMC.
The GHMC additional commissioner, Mr Sk Aleem Basha, said the municipal corporation does not have data on number of commercial establishments and advertisements on them in the city.
The inventory, a first of its kind, will be updated regularly.
