Students of Lovely Institute call off week old strikeStudents of the Lovely Institute of Law today called off their strike following an assurance from the institute’s management that their demands would be looked into.
The decision to withdraw the strike was announced after representatives of the law students held a two-hour meeting with the Dean, Ms Rashmi Mittal, here this afternoon.
The students said the authorities had put up an assurance pertaining to the fulfillment of their demands on the notice board.
But, Mr Ashok Mittal, president, Lovely Institutes, denied having agreed to any of the demands of the students.
The students claimed that the management had agreed to follow the norms laid down by the Guru Nanak Dev University for internal assessments.
However, Mr Mittal claimed that internal assessments were already being made as per the norms.
Again, according to the students, the management had even given their consent to changing the “gating” time for girl students till from 4 pm to 2 pm.
On this, the president of the Lovely Institutes claimed that the students’ demands of limiting the “gating” time for girls till 12 pm was unjustifiable. “So we kept it to 2 pm,” he said.
Also, a new contractor had been given the charge of their canteen in accordance with the demands, the students claimed.
But Mr Mittal claimed the changing of the canteen contractor was part of a routine process.

Lovely Institute revokes suspension ordersThe authorities of Lovely Institutes today revoked the suspension orders passed against five students of the Lovely Institute of Law on Thursday. The decision was taken after holding a meeting with the students’ parents on the campus here.

Institute asked to refund feeThe District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has asked Lovely Institute of Law to refund an amount of Rs 36,285 taken as hostel fee with 9 per cent interest to a student who surrendered her seat and pay her Rs 2000 as compensation.
Rakshit Rai Mehta, a student from Amritsar, said that she had deposited a fee of Rs 16,970 and hostel security fee to the tune of Rs 38,500 with Lovely Institute of Law on July 21, 2005. She said that she joined on August 8, 2005 but due to unavoidable circumstances, she had to surrender her seat on August 29, 2005 and take admission in Regional Centre of Guru Nanak Dev University, Gurdaspur.
She had alleged that she did not get a good atmosphere in hostel and asked for refund of fee and hostel charges.
The authorities of the institute claimed that the student had cited family problem as the reason for leaving the seat in an application received by them on August 29, 2005. They claimed that they had suffered a loss of seat as it remained vacant during the entire session. The forum observed that the institute had suffered a loss due to vacant seat and so the fee could not be refunded.
But it stated that the student had not availed the hostel facility from the month of September 2005 onwards for which she should be refunded an amount of Rs 36,285 along with 9 per cent interest from the date of deposition till payment. It also asked the institute to pay Rs 2000 as compensation which would include the cost of litigation.
