DU teachers to skip admissions

Just two days before the expected declaration of the first cut-off lists, differences between the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) and Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental over the introduction of a semester system are threatening to delay the admission process. DUTA has asked all teachers to dissociate from admission procedures as a sign of protest against what they call a unilateral and arbitrary imposition of syllabi by the VC in violation with the ordinances of the DU.

DUTA claimed on Saturday that the staff associations of 53 colleges have decided to abstain from advising their principals on admissions, formally or informally. The registrar of DU had sent a letter to all principals asking them to remind the teachers that they would be violating Ordinance 12.4(a) of their service agreements, under which they are bound to participate in the process.

Some principals expressed grave concern over the delay in admissions. Calculating the cut-offs is very difficult without the teachers. I have been trying to convince them to help. We can depend on the non-academic staff only to a certain extent, said Aslam Parvez, principal, Zakir Hussain College.

But others such as PC Jain, principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce, played down the controversy. I dont think this is going to have any bearing on the first cut-off list. It will be as per schedule. Minoti Chatterjee, principal of Kamla Nehru College, said, Though it is difficult to prepare the cut-off list without the teachers, we cannot withhold the list. We will send it as per schedule. How can they hold the university to ransom? I hope reason will prevail and the first list will come on June 22, as scheduled, V-C Deepak Pental said.

DUTA to go on strike against extension of v-cs term

The Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), in a general body meeting, passed a resolution to go on strike from September 21-23, protesting the Vice-Chancellors continuance in office. On September 24, the DUTA will hold a discussion with the office bearers of Delhi University Students Union, and also the students to discuss the prevailing crisis in the university.

The teachers have also decided that to compensate for the loss of teaching hours because of the protests and strikes, classes will be held during the winter vacations. The winter break, this year, will only be for 15 days instead of one month. We will compensate for the loss of time due to strikes in those fifteen days, said Aditya Narayan Misra, president of DUTA.

The teachers body held Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental responsible for the decision made by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board to not allow Delhi University to use any radioactive source. The V-C and other authorities have consistently tried to derail any worthwhile public inquiry into this incredible sale and has tried to subvert its own inquiry, said Misra.
The DUTA also said that it is worried that withdrawal of AERB sanction to use radioactive source will adversely affect science teachers, students and research scholars. They also demanded that Pental should be immediately arrested in order to carry out an unbiased inquiry.

DUTA, varsity admin fail to sort out differences

Delhi University (DU) and its teachers body continue to remain at loggerheads, even as attempts are being made by the university to reach out to them. A few days after the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) protested outside the vice-chancellors (VC) office against the unilateral functioning of the V-C, the body is still unhappy with the goings-on within the administration.

University officials claim that no stone is being left unturned in ironing out the problems of the teachers, including issues related to promotions and appointments. We have been working consistently for the betterment of the university and the teachers. The university administration has succeeded in removing the impediments from the point system, which will benefit the teachers who are going to be promoted and recruited in future. We are also creating a college teachers grievance redressal mechanism, said a senior DU official.

The university has also opened 390 teaching posts across 50 departments to fill in for the lack of teaching staff in its colleges. The teachers association, however, has decided to go hammer and tongs after the administration. We will discuss the issues that we had raised on January 10 in a meeting next week. We will conduct an extended DUTA executive meeting on January 24 and then preside over our General Body Meeting at the end of this month.

Teachers are unhappy with the goings-on in the university and we are not holding any obstructive dharnas. The V-C cannot tell us that doing so amounts to contempt of court. He must know that this is an attack on democracy, said Abha Dev Habib, member, DUTA.Among the many issues that DUTA is battling, their ire remains directed at the Ministry of Human Resource Development for having enforced the semester system upon DU.

V-C labels DUTAs protest illegal

The standoff between Delhi University (DU) administration and the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) is unlikely to end soon. DUTAs Thursday dharna has run into trouble with the office of the registrar sending letters to all college principals, informing them that the dharna is against the High Courts order.

Teachers are not allowed to disrupt classes to protest. Strong action will be taken against any teacher absent from work on Thursday, said Dinesh Singh, vice chancellor, DU. DUTA had planned the dharna to protest against the V-Cs unresponsive and irresponsible attitude. We have been requesting a dialogue with him for months but he has not responded. He has also made declarations about the functioning of DU without putting up projects in front of either the Academic Council or Executive Council. This is unacceptable, said Amar Deo Sharma, president, DUTA.

Teachers, who had planned to join the protest, say that they will not flout any court orders. The order was against missing classes to protest. No one will miss classes. The V-C is trying to take away from us the right to peaceful protest, said Abhi Dev Habib, member, DUTA. The dharna is supposed to be held outside the V-Cs office.
