Just another brick in the wall

Thousands of private matriculation schools in the state, which are already facing several problems, are now stuck with the fixation of fees issue as the lives of several teachers are at stake. Mr S. Alfred Devaprasad, president and chief executive officer, Alpha group of institutions, said a few teachers had submitted their resignation. However, the management intervened and took steps to announce increments after which the teachers dropped their idea to resign.

Now there is a growing concern among school managements on how to run the school with the fees the committee has recommended. Schools are running out of money so it will be difficult for us (school managements) to continue to provide increments, he said. Mr N. Vijayan, general secretary of the Federation of Matriculation Schools Associations, said the fees fixed by the committee were unrealistic and impractical. We do not know on what basis the fees were fixed. We cannot run the school with the low fee the committee has recommended. If we collect the new fees, our schools will be able to pay the teachers their salaries for only six to eight months in a year, he said.

Mr R. Kishore Kumar, senior principal and managing director of St. Johns International Residential School in the city, said Tamil Nadu had been the forerunner in providing high quality education for a long time but now due to the revised fee structure, schools might not provide quality education putting jeopardising the future of lakhs of students.

Pointing out that numerous students may migrate to CBSE from state and matriculation schools for want of quality education, Mr Kumar said several parents feel that they would prefer to pay more for high quality education in CBSE schools.

VIT chancellor G. Viswanathan said more regulations lead to corruption in the country. When you bring in new rules and regulations, it leads to corruption; if you eradicate corruption in education, the system will work fine. You need to pay money everywhere to start a college, he said.
