Principal molests college student
The director-principal of the Doaba College of Pharmacy in Ghataur village was arrested on Monday after a student alleged that he molested, sexually harassed and misbehaved with her. The alleged physical overtures took place on Friday but the incident came to light today after the victim reported the matter to the police and the college authorities.Acting swiftly, the Kharar police arrested Dr Amal Raj on charges of assault, outraging a woman’s modesty, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation under Sections 354, 342 and 506 of the IPC, said Sub-Inspector Dalbeer Singh. The college management soon followed suit and placed Dr Raj under suspension. The complaint has been referred to the college s Sexual Harassment Grievances Cell for inquiry, said Chief Administrator of the college, Jeet Singh.
According to reports, a close relative of the complainant also assaulted Dr Raj in his office this morning. The cornered director-principal submitted a complaint of assault against the girl’s kin to the college management, which was later forwarded to the police. However, S-I Singh claimed he had not received any such complaint yet. To express solidarity with the victim, a hosteller whose parents are settled abroad, the college students resorted to a strike and pelted the director-principal s office with stones.
The student has alleged that on April 3, Dr Raj called her to his office after classes on the pretext of discussing her short attendance. There he subjected her to molestation and sexual harassment but she managed to run away, recollected the student s brother-in-law Nirmaldeep Singh, a resident of Kharar, with whom she is staying at present. Singh alleged that the accused threatened them with dire consequences when he accompanied his sister-in-law to discuss the matter. He also admitted to exchanging a few blows with the accused.
Fresh case against suspended principal
Already booked for outraging the modesty of a girl student, keeping her in wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation, the Kharar police today slapped another charge against Dr Amal Raj, the suspended director-principal of Doaba College of Pharmacy in Ghataur.The fresh case, registered under Sections 107/151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (arrest to prevent commission of cognizable offence and maintain security), was lodged after the victim apprehended a threat to her life from the accused.
Dr Raj allegedly threatened her with dire consequences when he and the complainant were called in for recording statements at Kharar police station last evening.
After being kept in custody overnight, Dr Raj was released on bail this afternoon, said investigation officer Sub-Inspector Gurbax Ram. Soon after his release in the first case, the accused was taken into custody again on the fresh complaint.
Later, Dr Raj was produced before the court of the Kharar Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who ordered his release on bail after bail bonds were furnished by the college.
Meanwhile, students returned to classes on Tuesday morning after their one-day strike, said chief administrator of the college Jeet Singh. He added that even the complainant attended her classes as usual and returned to the hostel, where she was staying earlier. Dr Raj will be kept away from college till the Sexual Harassment Grievances Cell completes its inquiry, added Singh.
