HRD Min acts against erring colleges

9 Jun 2009
The Human Resource Development Ministry has acted upon the tainted colleges exposed by The Times of India and TIMES NOW a week ago. In an exclusive interview to TIMES NOW, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has said that the Government has issued a showcause notice to the colleges.

As you know our ministry has already issued showcause notices to the respective colleges, we will take appropriate action, said Sibal. The colleges have been given a deadline of three weeks in which to respond to the Ministry.

The notices were issued two days ago soon after Mr Kapil Sibal had sought a copy of the Times of India-TIMES NOW investigation and after perusing it thought fit to question the administrations of both the implicated colleges why money was being sought in lieu of admissions when merit only should be considered.

The capitation fee issue has been plaguing Tamil Nadu students for a long time and the Apex Court has even ruled it is illegal to ask for capitation fee - just another name for donation in exchange for admission.

Enquiries are currently going on at many levels. After the HRD ministry, now University Grants Commission is in the process of constituting an enquiry committee which also has been given a deadline of about three weeks to table results.

After the report has been tabled the UGC will review whether the colleges should be stripped of their deemed status, a power that is vested in the UGC only.

Meanwhile the Medical Council of India s executive council meeting begins in New Delhi today. Three members of the enquiry commitee will first go through the TIMES NOW documents after which the full body of the MCI Executive Council will sit tomorrow.

The MCI will also start an enquiry into the incident, after TIMES NOW submitted the video evidence taken from the Sri Balaji Medical college and the Sri Ramachandra University to the MCI. But even as the MCI meets in the capital, serious doubts are being raised whether the medical body will take any action at all considering the grave conflict of interest implicit in the case.

MCI President Ketan Desai and Vice President Kesavankutty Nair are both board members of the Sri Ramachandra University. Officials of this university were caught on camera asking for a whopping Rs 40 lakhs as capitation fees. The second college Sri Balaji Medical college is allegedly been run by DMK s cabinet minister Jagathrakshakan. The minister on his part has said he has no more ties with the college.
