Science models competition
Teams of the Government College of Education, Faridkot and the Government College of Education, Patiala, shared equal honours in the third Inter-College Working Science Models Competition, organised under the aegis of the Patiala Chapter of the Indian Science Congress and the Punjab Academy of Sciences at the State College of Education here yesterday.
Bharat Bhushan and Pooja of Faridkot College won the first prize in the life sciences section, while Rasik and Shveta of the local Education College got the first position in the physical sciences section.
Special prizes for teaching aids in the physical sciences section went to Tilak Raj and Renuka and those in the life section went to Tonika and Daisy Gupta � all students of the local Education College. The prizes were awarded to the students by Dr B S Gill, Professor Emeritus of Punjabi University. Earlier, the exhibition was inaugurated by Dean, Colleges, Dr S.P.S. Virdi. The Principal of the local college, Dr Kanwarjit Singh, spoke on the exhibition and how it helped in making students learn the concepts of science.
Workshop on disaster management
The three-day workshop on disaster preparedness sponsored by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology ended at the State College of Education here.
Dr Kanwaljeet Singh, DPEI, Colleges and Dr Neelam Gulati Sharma and Dr Kulbir Singh Bath from the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology presided over the proceedings.
Addressing the audience, Dr Kanwaljeet Singh shared his experiences on the issue. Dr Neelam stressed upon conserving faith in traditional prudence which had descended through generations. She put special emphasis on the application of science and technology in academic endeavours.
A book on disaster management, edited by Dr Rajeev Sharma was also released. Experts on earthquakes, floods, tsunami, landslides, fires, snakebites, blood donation, first aid and road safety and traffic rules delivered lectures. The fire brigade units of Patiala demonstrated how to control a fire. Teachers and students of colleges from Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur and Ropar attended the workshop.
Street play on tsunami
To highlight the tragedy of tsunami victims , the Naiti Theatre group yesterday performed a street play at State College of Education here.
The play, named � Kudrat Da Tandav�, has been produced by Mr Gurcharan Singh and written by Mr Bunty Waraich.
The artists tried to replicate the scenes of the tsunami disaster. Speaking on the occasion Mr Gurcharan Singh said the play was staged to encourage youngsters to join the relief operations. The music was composed by Mr Mandeep Lucky.
Mr Gurcharan said they would perform the play in different colleges to collect funds to send as aid to the people who have been devastated by the tsunami in southern India and added that the collected amount will be sent to the Prime Ministers� Relief Fund.
School holds annual function
National High School organised its annual prize distribution function in the auditorium of the State College of Education here today.
About 600 students of the school participated in the function which was presided over by Patiala Mayor Vishnu Sharma.
The function, which lasted nearly eight hours, was a gala affair, with students presenting a range of items, including folk dances, skits, fancy dress shows and parodies.
At least 400 students were awarded prizes under various categories, including academics, sports, painting and other extra-curricular activities. Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said his daughters were former students of the school and he would extend all possible help to the school authorities in upgrading the institution to the senior secondary level.
Principal Rajinder Kaur, presenting the annual report of the school, claimed that the school had for the past decade attained 100 per cent results in both Class VIII and Class X Board examinations.
She informed that NCC had also been introduced recently in the school.
The institution�s Director, Mr Nirmal Singh, thanking the teachers, said they had worked tirelessly in keeping the school ahead in all fields.
Satbir Singhs birth anniversary
The birth anniversary of Sikh scholar Principal Satbir Singh will be celebrated on March 14 in the auditorium of State College of Education, Patiala, at 2 p.m. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Working Committee of the Punjabi Vikas Manch, held recently under the chairmanship of Mr N.S. Parwana. The function will be presided over the Minister for Public Health, Raja Narinder Singh.
Significant Sikh scholars Prof. Prithipal Singh Kapur, Prof. Balwinder Singh, Prof. Joginder Singh Delhi, Mr Jagmit Singh Brar, ex M.P., will speak on the life of Principal Satbir Singh.
The Secretary-General of the Manch, Mr Parminder Singh, and chairman Avtar Singh Arora said a play written by Principal Satbir Singh and directed by Charan Singh Sidhra, "Mard Agamraha" will also be staged on the occasion. Various writers and journalists from different parts of Punjab will also be honoured.
A five-member committee under the leadership of Prof S.S. Joshi, was formed to make arrangements for the function. The committee includes Mr Kuldip Singh, Mr N.S Parwana, President of the Manch, Mr Ranjit Singh, Mr Darshan Kumar, and Mr S.J.S. Chhabra. Eminent writer Sarup Singh s book "The Significance of the Keshs" will be released by Mr Jagmit Singh Brar.
An exhibition of the books of Principal Satbir Singh, will also be held.
Children sensitised on pollution
The Tribune Deputy Editor Amar Chandel today favoured check on pollution at the micro level in houses and streets for a better future.
Delivering presidential address at a public speaking competition at the State College of Education here, he said knowledge on pollution had been disemminated but people continued to destroy enviroment.
He urged students to think on how much smoke their scooter was belching. The speaker also lamented that for some spreading pollution was becoming a fashion statement. �Many youngsters use this to show their rebellious streak,� he said while urging everyone to do self introspection on the subject.
Seminar on national integration
The Punjabi University National Integration Chair organised a seminar on national integration in collaboration with the State College of Education here, yesterday.
Dr Baltej Singh Mann, head of the Chair, said national integration would soon be introduced as a subject at the undergraduate level in the university. He also announced the launching of a countrywide national integration awareness campaign and inter-state youth exchange programme.
Dr Kanwarjit Singh, in his presidential address, said the root cause of disintegration was political opportunism, deteriorating socio-economic conditions and mischievous propaganda for vested interests by various bodies. He said religion was a personal affair and should not under any circumstances be mixed with politics and the state should maintain equidistance from all religions.
While inaugurating the seminar, Dr Ajit Singh Bhatia exhorted the youth to come forward to fight the menace of terrorism. Dr Anand Spencer, Associate Professor of Christianity at Punjabi University, observed in his paper that “inter-faith dialogue†in which people of all faiths could participate would go a long way in strengthening and promoting national integration.
Prof Dharam Singh, a Reader at Punjabi University, in his paper “National integration from Sikh perspective†maintained that India’s religious diversity was its strength. He emphasised the need for better understanding and appreciation of other faiths to build a society where people could live in peace.
Prof G.S. Bajwa, Prof Joginder Singh Rana, Prof Raj Gupta and Prof S.S. Rekhi also expressed their views.
9 teams participate in geography contest
An inter-college competition for skill in teaching of geography and model making was organised at the State College of Education here on Tuesday under the aegis of the Association of Punjab Geographers. Team from nine colleges of education from all over Punjab participated. The president of the association, Dr H.S. Mangat, highlighted the need and importance of teaching geography in schools and colleges.
In the ‘skill in teaching’ category, Pooja Jain of the State College of Education, Patiala, won the first prize; Yadvandra Singh of GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, won the second prize; and Seema Rani of Government College Education, Faridkot, was adjudged third.
In the ‘teaching aid model’ category, Jaswant Singh of GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, and Jagjit Singh of Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, won the first and second prizes, respectively. Nina Jain Pratap of the College of Education, Ludhiana, was adjudged third.
Websites must for education colleges
Vice-chairman of the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE), S K Thakur, who was here to preside over the annual convocation of the State College of Education, here today, said that it was mandatory for all education colleges to have their own website wherein they have to list the infrastructure available in the college.
Interacting with mediapersons, S K Thakur said that it was a cognisable offence if a college of education did not have its own website and a case could be got registered against the defaulting college.
He said that the National Council of Teachers Education kept tabs on the facilities available in the colleges of education and it was a regulatory body for this purpose. Thakur said that he was not in favour of a ban on opening of new colleges of education and said that the mushrooming of such colleges was no cause of concern.
Referring to a query from newspersons, Thakur said that the sole purpose of the education colleges was not to produce B.Ed qualified teachers but also to produce good parents. He contended that the B.Ed graduates could become better parents because they got good training for the purpose.
He further added that he was not against the affiliating universities levying penalties against defaulting colleges of education and said that on the contrary the National Council of Teachers’ Education (NCTE) was in favour of such punitive measures.
Later, Thakur gave away degrees to the graduates of the college.
