Profile of Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences and ResearchAbout Us
Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Science and Research, Sri Amritsar
The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar decided to start BDS course in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar in the year 1992 by constituting a Trust namely Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust which was formed on 15.12.1992. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar was also started in the year 1997 under the control of Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust, Amritsar. The Punjab Govt. accorded necessary sanction for start of BDS course with intake capacity of 60 students in this Institute and Guru Nanak Dev university, Amritsar granted affiliation to it. First batch of 60 students was admitted in 1992.
In the State of Punjab, there are 2 unaided Sikh minority medical and dental colleges, namely,
1. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar
2. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar
Being of one type of minority institutions with similar characteristic situation in respect to mode of admission, both these Institutes are very much different from other private un-aided Medical/Dental colleges in the State. In the year 2004, these two Institutes had formed a separate group, named as Association of Un-aided Sikh Minority Medical and Dental Institutions (Punjab State), for conducting the competitive admission test for the Sikh minority quota seats in the MBBS and BDS courses in these Institutes. This arrangement had been done in accordance with the law laid down by the Honble Supreme Court in the Islamic Academy of Education case by its order dated 14.8.2003.
This had become absolutely essential to form this Association because all other private, unaided Medical and Dental Institutes in the Punjab State had decided to admit their students through the PMET test. These two Institutions had to go ahead with the admission for the session 2004-05 through this Association as such, because the admission time was running out and the two high powered committees, headed by Honble retired High Court Judges required to be constituted by the State Government for deciding the admission procedure and the fee structure, had not yet been formed. Therefore, this Association decided to proceed with the admission to these two Institutions by conducting independent competitive entrance test on the similar lines as has been done in the earlier years by these institutions, both in admission procedure and fee structure, the details of which have been fully incorporated in the Prospectus.
The Admission Supervision Committee, headed by Honble Justice G.R. Majithia (Retd.), has granted permission to the Association for holding its own competitive entrance test for admission to 50% Sikh minority quota for the session 2005-06, as during the previous year, vide its letter No. 1/35/05-1ASC (M)/1512-1514, dated 23.5.2005.
