3 new UG courses at Ambedkar University

The Ambedkar University (AU) is set to offer three new courses at the undergraduate level this year. The new courses will be available in English, sociology and mathematics. The course in English will comprise epics, drama, non-fiction along with non-conventional topics such as lyric, songs and film. The optional courses that a student can take for extra credits are on culture studies, folklore and childrens literature. The university, whose campus is in Dwarka and Kashmere Gate, was established by an act of the Delhi government in 2007 and notified in 2008.The undergraduate curriculum at AU follows the semester system.

In the newly introduced mathematics course, topics such as statistics, probability, cryptography and numerical analysis will be taught. In sociology, core papers will include sociological concepts, social institutions, and sociological research. At AU, undergraduate courses are flexible. Students do not start studying their major subjects until the third semester. Until then, they study basic foundation courses in English and social sciences.
During the first two semesters, all undergraduate students study the same subjects. After they make their choice, they will proceed to major in economics, psychology or history. All courses will have papers touching upon the Indian society, constitution and citizenship.

The university also offers a four-year BA (Honours) with dual major. A student can graduate with a BA (Honours) in Economics and History, for example. The two subjects that he-she opts for will be his-her major.
AU is the first Central or state university to implement the flexible mode of learning. At the post graduate level as well, the university has come out with new courses in English, economics, history and sociology.
Course Profile B.Sc.(Hons) Zoology For students who are interested in genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology or other similar research areas, a course in zoology (honours) will lay down a strong foundation.

B.Sc. (Honours) Zoology is an even blend of biodiversity, chemistry, molecular and cell biology, animal physiology along with mathematics and statistics. The course also includes a concurrent course in technical writing and communicative in English.

Later on, it goes on to include branches like immunology, ecology, developmental biology, biotechnology and genetics. With a total of 24 papers, including the concurrent courses, students are then required to take an internship to give
them a hands-on experience in their field of study.

While pursuing the course, it is imperative to utilise the holidays well. A zoology student must do an internship in this time. For this, you have several institutes like IISc (Bangalore), the National Institute of Oceanography (Goa) and WWF, which provide ample scope for learning on job, said Prabhakar Dwivedi, a student of Hindu College.
Teachers space

A student can either pursue further studies after doing a B.Sc. in Zoology or can straightaway start working in the corporate sector. Most students, however, prefer further studies as research broadens the scope of employment. Avenues like biotechnology and pharmacology are opening up for students of zoology, said PK Sinha, who teaches Zoology in Hindu College.

For students to understand what a job in this field will be like, summer training and internships are very important. They get an idea about how to work in a lab, he added.

New MPhil course to begin from the academic session of 2012-13

Ambedkar University, Delhi (AUD) along with Pradan, an NGO working towards development in the rural sector, has launched a new MPhil programme in development practice to begin from the academic session of 2012-13. The two-year (four semester) programme has a total intake of 25 students. The course is intended for those who are interested in community service and grassroots development.

According to Dr Anup Dhar, faculty, school of human studies and in-charge of the development practice programme, the university already has development studies as a full-fledged course, which basically involves research; but there was a need to have a professional course as well, which will go beyond research and actually focus on practice. The programme is a blend of classroom and field study.

We are setting up a development centre at the university, which will become a training hub for students. As part of the course curriculum, students will study development, psychological processes and group learning from both management and psychological perspectives, says Dhar.

Further, elaborating on the module of the course, he says, while the first semester is exclusively on theory, students will have a 10-week village stay and study, twice, during the second and third semesters. This is when they will study and work along with the village people on their problems. The fourth semester is the action-research phase, exclusively in the villages, as students will be initiating change projects, thereby, creating self-help groups and other such strategies.

The project in the last semester is meant for students to usher in a small change in the village and peoples life there. They will be required to initiate a feasible action-research project and document the entire process to bring about some degree of change. This project will serve as their dissertation for the programme, informs Dhar.

To facilitate students during their stay in the villages and project work, a fellowship of Rs 15,000 will be given to them throughout the programme. Eligible students require a Masters with 55% aggregate marks in the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences or professional degrees like law, engineering, agriculture and medicine.

Missed the DU bus? Rush to Ambedkar University; last day to apply today

Wednesday is the last day when students will be able to apply for a seat in Ambedkar University.

The university has already received more than 1,000 applications for the 240 seats offered as part of its undergraduate programmes. The application procedure for the university,

which offers both bachelors and masters programmes, was started on May 25.

Launched in 2008 by the Delhi government, the university reserves 85% seats for students from Delhi. It has campuses at Kashmere Gate and Dwarka.

The BA programmes offered by the university are unique, with students being given the option of doing a three-year single major or four-year dual major honours degree.

The first year of study for all students is similar, with papers being taught in humanities, social sciences and basic mathematics. The courses are highly interdisciplinary.

Students have the option to choose their main discipline of study after one year. The university offers 35 seats in each course.

Application forms are available online, and there are no paper forms. One application form can be used to apply for several BA programmes.

The application fee, however, has to be paid in cash or through a demand draft drawn in favour of Ambedkar University, Delhi, payable at New Delhi.

The university, which was started as a model institution for higher education, has a small class size for better quality. It also has experienced faculty members, many of whom were earlier part of the Delhi University.
