An Incredible Learning Experience for NU MBA students in China
As part of the International Immersion Programme, the students of MBA spent an enriching evening with Dr. Jaishankar, the Indian Ambassador to China. It was a highly interactive session where the students posed pertinent questions ranging from bilateral relations to the economic growth of the country.

Master Plan
The 100-acre NIIT University campus is nestled in the Aravali range in Rajasthan, considered the oldest fold mountain range in the world. A Master Plan ought to take cognizance of the needs of the site as well as the requirements of the University. The NIIT University Master plan, path breaking in its vision and ambitious in implementation, prepares for just that. This particular site at Neemrana posed several challenges. The master plan was developed after due consideration of environmental impact. It respects the natural flows through the site and breaks fresh ground for promoting sustainable development. It allows phased construction of the University to start from the north side and continue towards the south.
Along with the architectural challenges of the site, come the tremendous opportunities that perhaps few other sites offer. Cradled in the magnificent Aravali mountain range, the site offers possibilities for recreation and learning, restricted only by your enthusiasm. The topology of the site gives the University an invaluable resource – a sustainable source of water supply.

NIIT University at Neemrana is designed as a walking campus without motor vehicles. To make it possible for people to walk in the heat of Neemrana, a shaded and rain protected pedestrian spine linking all major areas in the University, is in development. Students will be able to walk to the academic buildings under shade and facilities will be located along the pedestrian spine, making sure that it remains active and safe all through the day. Motor vehicles will be parked in a parking lot near the entrance.

Students are the focus of this campus layout. The views from each hostel room are designed so as to bring the feeling of nature into interior spaces. One of the natural depressions in the site has been developed as an amphitheater and another will be developed as the sports arena. A rooftop open air theater has been built for enjoying sunsets, and perhaps, dreaming of new horizons.

Geo-info ready

The area of geographic information systems (GIS) is expanding exponentially with the development in allied fields such as remote sensing and IT, enabling creation of new tools for rigorous scientific analysis. Keeping this in mind, NIIT University (NU) is conducting a research on geographic information systems (GIS) to understand and analyse issues in the local landscape.

At a local level, NU is currently venturing into a project that will study thoroughly, a 20 km area around the university. This area will be like a geographical lab where researchers and students will go to the field, make observations , collect data and analyse them in geospatial environment in the lab, says MB Rajni, assistant professor (GIS area), NIIT University.

On how the work is being conducted , Prasad Avinash Pathak, assistant professor (GIS), NIIT University, explains , For our projects, GIS analyses demands and integrates data from various sources. For example, to study water-related issues, the data from ground-based sensors and remotely sensed data, i.e. satellite images, are being processed. We will also incorporate data collected using survey of local population and industry. In addition to that, we cross-check the interpretations made from satellite images and collect related information.

GIS is a powerful technology for any field, which has a spatial component. Compared to other traditional approaches , GIS enables better understanding and better comprehension of a variety of information by simulating geo-spatial visualisations.

GIS has a strong visualisation power. Hence, it supports decision-making process in a better manner. Lets take an example of studying the surroundings of Neemrana, where a variety of activities are taking place, from development of industries and educational institutions, connected inflow of people and their domestic settlement, existing settlement and their reaction to such modern changes; change of land use patterns and illegal mining to afforestation and its implication on the local biodiversity, he explains.

About future plans, Rajni says that they want to develop a healthy and vibrant research culture in GIS by having research projects in relevant topics. They plan to expand their sociological studies by including more parameters such as economic status and literacy to analyse child sex ratio in more realistic manner. As water-related issues are critical for the state of Rajasthan, they are planning to expand the study area further and develop state-wide infrastructure to understand water scarcity at multiple scales to find better solutions for the problem.

These projects would also provide opportunities for MTech in GIS and allow BTech students to participate in research and make their contribution.
