From the Pen of Chairman Mr Manmohan Kamal MahajanTakshashila and Nalanda were the sanctum sanctorum of knowledge. Takshashila, the world's first university was established in 700 BC. Students from all over the world came and studied more than 60 subjects including Vedas, rituals, sciences, archery, swordsmanship, magic, recovery of buried treasure, etc. Nalanda derived from Nalam, meaning lotus, a symbol of knowledge, and Da, meaning house of many. Nalanda had over one thousand professors. Admission to the portals of the university was strictly on merit based on viva voce examination of the prospective pupils. We had rich traditions: others were envious. With frequent external invasions, India's glory of being an academic hub of the world received set back. Muscular powers over powered us. We were reduced to insignificance.
Times Changed. Without going into hoary past, it may be recalled that three modern universities at Calcutta, Bombay and Madras were started in 1857. These were started not for teaching, but to hold examinations and confer degrees. The University of Calcutta Act received the Governor General's assent on 24 January 1857. The University of Bombay was established on 18 July 1857, while the University of Madras was incorporated on 5 September 1857. Thereafter two universities, the Panjab University, Lahore, and Allahabad University, Allahabad were established in 1882 and 1887
respectively. Thus the University of Calcutta is the Alma Mater of all Alma Maters in India.
Let's have a peep into the archive's of the Mother University.
The School-Leaving Examination was conducted for the first time in 1857. Among 244 candidates who applied for the Entrance, 10 were from Delhi and the rest from Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. Fifteen candidates were absent and 67 failed, while 115 were placed in the first division.
A Candidate intending to appear for BA Examination was required to submit certificate from the Head of the Institution/College that he had attended a regular course of study in any of the institutions affiliated to the university with a sum of Rs.25/- as the examination fee.
The first BA Examination was held in 1858. Out of 13 candidates, three were absent from the whole or part of the examination and the rest could not pass. The Board of Examiners recommended that two candidates- Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and Judoo Nath Bose who had passed creditably in five of the six subjects, and had failed by not more than seven marks in the sixth, as a special grace, be allowed to have their degree, being placed in second division. They were thus awarded the degree. The MA Examination was held for the first time in 1861. Only one candidate appeared but he
could not pass. Next Year, three appeared but none could succeed. In 1863, six out of the seven who appeared, passed, forming the first batch of MA's of the university.
Failure in an examination is not failure. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote celebrated novels including Anandamath that contains Vande Mataram, our national song, which was set to music by Rabindranath Tagore.
