Introduction of Govt Ceramic CollegeAbout GCECT
Government College of Engineering & Ceramic Technology, GCE&CT (formerly College of Ceramic Technology), was established in the Year 1941, by Professor Sasadhar Ray, an eminent educationist of that time with the objective of imparting knowledge and training for developing skilled technical manpower for serving the Ceramic and Allied Industries.
The College initially started with Diploma and Certificate Courses in Ceramic Technology. In the year 1962, B. Sc. (Tech) Degree Course in Ceramic Technology was introduced under the affiliation of University of Calcutta which later was converted to B. Tech degree in Ceramic Technology in 2000. Finally, in the Year 2001, B. Tech. Degree was introduced under West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). Moreover, B. E. in Information Technology (IT) was introduced under University of Calcutta in the year 2000. Then, another new discipline in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) was also introduced in the college, and both IT & CSE (B. Tech.) degrees came under the banner of WBUT from 2001. The College also offers M. Tech. Degree in Ceramics with limited number of seats. All the above courses are affiliated to AICTE, New Delhi.
GCE&CT is the oldest Ceramic College in India and one of the few colleges that has got the opportunity to be headed by people who have got international recognition. The college has reached its magnificence under the admirable guidance of Principals like Prof. Sasadhar Ray (founder of the college), a student of Prof. Satyen Bose (F.R.S.) and Prof. K. S. Krishnan (F.R.S.), and Prof. (Dr.) B. N. Sammadar, who did his research work at M. I. T. (USA) and worked together with Prof. (Dr.) W. D. Kingery (considered as Father of Modern Ceramics). At present, the college is headed by Prof. (Dr.) P. G. Pal [Ph.D. (Tech.) Calcutta University].
The immense success achieved by the college has also been reflected in the field of campus recruitment of students. Presently, students of the college are already being recruited from the 3rd Year of their B. Tech. Course. The stream of Ceramic Technology undergoes 100% recruitment and that of IT and CSE has also achieved commendable success in recent years. Renowned companies like Saint Gobain Glass (India) Ltd., Jindal South West Steel Ltd., Essar Steel Ltd., Jindal Stainless Steel Ltd., Steel Authority of India Ltd., Grindwell Norton, MECON, CUMI, Tata Refractories Ltd. et al. have already arrived at the college for campus recruitment this year.
For IT and CSE streams, Sierra Atlantic Software Services, Assergent, Godrej Infotech, Tech. Mahindra, Tata Elxsi, Satyam, TCS., Cognizant, Connectiva (Kuwait), I-flex, HCL, MEC Technology, Wipro Infotech, US Technology Resources, Infosys, Sasken, L. & T. Infotech et al. have recruited students this year. The college expects an even greater recruitment drive in the coming years.
The college is under the Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of W.B., which takes an active part in overall policy matters and certain financial sanctions. The college has recently gained autonomy to deal with many financial matters and the overall management is guided by a 'Governing Body' consisting of very eminent people from the industry and the Government, which is headed by a renowned industrialist Shri. S. K. Ghosh who is also an ex-student of this college. Shri Ghosh, with his right expertise, can take this college to greater heights in future.
Certain recent actions need a special mention here. Senior Teachers under the Headship of Prof. (Dr.) P. G. Pal recently visited several industries in Mumbai region and developed useful contacts for collaborative research work that will further create future job possibilities in Ceramics. Prof. (Dr.) P. N. Dutta (Head, CSE) with Dr. Mousumi Maitra (Head, IT) developed useful contacts with several IT industries, notably with INFOSYS, with whom we have signed a comprehensive MOU for future training of Faculties as well for future jobs for IT & CSE students with training possibility. The programme of EDUSAT of WBUT with Virtual Learning capability has already started in the college. Another new feather in the cap is the addition of a most modern Language Lab for English Communication Skill & Personality Development of our students.
History of College of Ceramic TechnologyOur College of Ceramic Technology was established in 1941 by Professor Sasadhar Ray who was an eminent and educationist and the first Principal of the college. At that time the college was named as Bengal Ceramic Institute Calcutta, which later on flowered into College of Ceramic Technology. Professor Ray was one of the pioneers in spreading ceramic education in India. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Physics in 1930, as a student of Prof. Satyendranath Bose, from the University of Dacca having been place first in Class. He was a research scholar under Prof. K. S. Krishnan-F. R.S. in the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and served as a supervisor in Peripatetic Demonstration for Scheme of the Govt. of Bengal to popularize the ceramic manufacturing processes in the villages. He also worked for a brief period in the Industrial Research Laboratory, Dept. of Industries, Government of West Bengal.
The college started with certificate and diploma courses in Ceramic Technology with six other different courses to train people for various ceramic industries in the eastern and other regions of India. Prof. Roy organized a commercial Training- cum- Production unit at the institute to provide employment through practical training to the students. He formulated many developmental schemes with their successful implementation and introduced the concept of self- employment in the institute to cope with the problem of growing unemployment in the country. He was the pioneer in India to manufacture bone chinawares using indigenous raw materials on commercial basis and glazed pottery, sanitary wares, tiles and low-tension insulators from Gangetic silt. His contribution to ceramic education and industry has gone for and near within India and round the globe.
In the year 1962, B. Sc (Tech.) degree course in Ceramic Technology under the University of Calcutta was introduced in the institute, which was then renamed as College of Ceramic Technology and was undertaken by the Govt. of West Bengal. At that time more emphasis was given on Traditional Ceramics. Traditional consists of pottery including materials, cement, etc. and traditional glasses for windows and containers/bottles including crystal glasses and of course the infamous optical glasses for our eyes and cameras.
Then came Dr. B. N. Samaddar as the Principal of the College, who was trained in MIT, USA. He brought a sophisticated touch of modern ceramics like Nuclear Ceramics, Space Ceramics, Electronic and Magnetic Ceramics, Bio-Ceramics, Piezoelectrics and Ferroelectrics by continuous enriching the courses with a strong emphasis on Materials Science.
In the year 2001, B. Tech degree was introduced in Ceramic Technology under the West Bengal University of Technology and was affiliated to A.I. C. T.E., New Delhi. This college was the only institute of its kind India dedicated entirely to ceramic education and research upto 2000. Recently, B. Tech. In I. T. and Comp. Sc. Engg. have been started . The college has also been approved to introduce M. Tech. Degree in Ceramic Engineering by the A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi.
In the year 2004, Prof. (Dr.) S. R. Bhadra Chaudhuri took charges as the Principal of the College. Under his able guidance, the college is flourishing day by day with immense development in the field of Ceramic coordinated with advanced technology.
The students are carefully chosen through West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations and are given special training in Group Discussions, Role play and Brainstorming sessions along with their academic and careeristic development in order to sustain in the competitive world of business. Industrial visits and other Professional activities (Presenting Seminars, Submitting Assignments, Reports, etc.) apart from their course curriculum are also arranged regularly for them. We have highly qualified group of faculty members, who always develop and innovate new techniques of the teaching-learning process to convey their gracious knowledge properly to the students. Apart from the academic activities the students of this college involve themselves in several creative works games and sport and cultural activities though a number of rich cultural programmes which they organise regularly. Special emphasis is given on the development of moral character and the rich aspects of humanity of the students through discipline and able guidance. If is important to note that our college is one of the very few institutes where 100% students are employed through campus interviews by reputed companies, although some students go of for higher studies through GATE for India and GRE for abroad.
Message of Principal PG PalElectrons do transport information in Electronics, whereas Photons do the same in Photonic materials. Both form the part in Information Technology (IT) and Ceramics (a part of Materials Science & Technology). However, photons do this job differently and faster than electrons do. Hence, sooner than later, many electronics (e) will be transformed into optical (o) devices for faster communication to handle the massive jams in the 'internet traffic', e. g. all e-mails will be called o-mails.
We are doing a lot of theoretical research on the above subject, e. g. nano ferroelectrics in the realm of photonics, in collaboration with Penn State University (USA) and University of Florida (USA) as well as with some National Institutes. In the near future, we might venture into experimental work that will pave the way for better and powerful teaching methods for both I. T. and Ceramics students.
It is said that a 'teacher' must do a lot of research work to bring focus in teaching various subjects. Many of us have been working in collaboration with exclusive National Research Organizations and International Centers to sharpen our skill. The higher education is a difficult domain, and the technology education is a different ball game altogether. So, there is a strong emphasis on research work besides continuously improving our teaching capability.
In our three departments (Ceramics, IT, CSE), all the Heads are involved in improving teaching methodology while they constantly motivate the other teachers to do good research work. The students benefit immensely from such activities, and some of them do 'short projects' even in the third year B.Tech. outside the syllabus, while many of them do useful work in the final year as a part of WBUT curriculum.
There is a good sign that many students are showing interest in going abroad (Europe & USA) for their training after third year with the Institutes having collaborations with us, and some of the B. Tech. thesis even gets examined in the USA to add value to their work.
Finally, I want to wish all the incoming students in all the departments to enjoy the campus life and get a truly meaningful education in our 65 years old College that is known both nationally and internationally.
Faculty introduction of Govt Ceramics Technology CollegeThis institute is probably the only institute in West Bengal where more that 40 % faculties are having valuable industrial experience, which helps to groom the students as per the industrial needs. Dr. P. G. Pal, Professor & Officer In charge of the institute, had his B.Sc.(H) from Narasingha Dutta college &B.Tech. from Calcutta University .He did a very important work in this college on sintering Magnesia-Alumina Ceramics and got his PhD in Technology from Calcutta University. He worked as Asst.Prof. in Ceramics & Cement Technology Dept at PDA College of Engg, Guberga,Karnataka.He worked also in Tata Refractories as Head,R&D, and developed a host of products for application in various metallurgical industries specially Copper industries. His current research interest is on Sintering of Alumina-Magnesia Spinel. He has completed a project on working lining of Steel Ladle jointly with TISCO. He is having no of publication in different journals.
Dr. Saikat Maitra, Professor & Head of the Department ,had his B.Sc.(H) from Presidency College & B.Tech,M.Tech & Ph.D. from Calcutta University. He has been teaching Solid State Chemistry, Advance Ceramics & Environment. He was in Sabbatical leave at Technology University of Petronas, Malaysia, as Associate Professor & recently has came back & re-joined the department. He has a large number of National & International Publications. His present research works are in the field of Kinetic Study, Thin film & Nano Technology. He is having industrial experience in Whitewares & Refractory industries. He has successfully guided three PhD thesis He is having a patent in his name.
Mr. R. Sen, Asst.Professor, had his B.Tech from this institute and M.Tech from B.H.U. He has been teaching Materials Sc.& his current research interest is on Phase Transition in Aluminium-Magenesium-Scandium based alloys by Positron Annihilation Technique in collaboration with Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, He also doing a project work on Jute-Cement Composite materials for road construction jointly with IIT-Khargpur and sponsored by All India Jute Manufacturers Association.
Dr. Kaberi Das, Asst Professor, had her B.Sc. (H) from Presidency College & B.Tech, M.Tech & PhD from Calcutta University. Her current research interest is in the development of Natural Raw Materials, High Performance Zirconium based ceramics: fly ash & Blast furnace Slag based Whitewares & Glass Ceramics. She has recently completed a project sponsored by AICTE on Magnesia based materials and got another project sanctioned by UGC on Natural Raw Materials. She is having two patents in her name & number of publications in National & International Journals
Mr. R. C. Das, Asst.Professor, had his B.Tech from this institute and M.Tech from B.H.U.He has been teaching Whitewares, Kilns & Furnace and Quality Assurance. . He is having long industrial experience in Whitewares & TQM. He is presently working on RPS project sponsored by AICTE on 'Development of Wear Resistance Ceramics using Fly Ash'. He is a qualified lead Auditor for ISO 9001,ISO 14001,OHSAS and he is a Master Black Belt on Six Sigma.
Dr. Srimanta Patra, Asst.Professor, had his B.Sc. (H) from Belur Vidyamandir & B.Tech, M.Tech & PhD from Calcutta University. He has been teaching cement Tech & Non Oxide Ceramics. His current research interest is on synthesis & characterization of High Temp. Ceramic Semiconductors. He is also in charge of Nano Technology lab.
Mr. P. Guha, Asst.Professor & in charge of Training & Placement, obtained his B.Sc.(H) from Scottish Church College &B.Tech & M.Tech from Calcutta University and obtained Gold Medal. Apart from T&P activities, he is involved in teaching Metallurgy. . He is having long industrial experience in Metallurgical Chemicals & Refractory industries His current research interest is in the study of sintering of ceramic composites.
Dr.Tapas Kr. Bhattacharya, Sr. Lecturer, had his B.Sc.(H), B.Tech & M.Tech. from Calcutta University & PhD from Jadavpur University. He has been teaching Whitewares, Ceramic Raw Materials, Chemical Thermodynamics & Kinetics. His present research work is on Whitewares product from cheaper waste materials like Fly Ash & Slag, Synthetic Ceramic Raw Materials and he has a number of Publications on his credit.
Basic Science & Engineering Division
Dr. Saibal Ray, Associate Professor in Physics had his M.Sc from IIT-KGP & Ph.D. from Jadavpur University. His current research interest is on General Relativity & Stellar Astrophysics, Brane-world model and Galactic Dynamics, Dark Energy theory & Cosmic expansion. He has been teaching classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics & Quantum Mechanics. He is having a number of papers published in reputed international journals. He has successfully guided two Ph.D. scholars and has been guiding several other scholars.
Dr. N Bandopadhyay, Professor of Chemical Engineering, had obtained his B.Sc.(H) from Rahara R.K Mission & his B.Tech from Calcutta University and M.Tech from IIT-KGP and Ph.D. from Calcutta University, He is having several years of industrial experience. He has done important work on various aspect of Chemical Engineering & his current research interest includes decomposition kinetics. His special interest on environment and 'Global Climate Change', recently being acknowledge by Science Association of Bengal with Dr J.C. Bose Science Day 2010 award. He is having several publications in his credit.
Dr.Sankar Roy, Asst.Professor of Mechanical Engineering obtained his B.E.,M.E. & Ph.D. from Jadavpur University. He has been teaching Mechanical Sciences, Engg Graphics & Workshop practices, Project in Fracture Mechanics & design of Furnace Equipment in PG classes. His current research interest includes Computational Fluid dynamics & Fracture Mechanics where he has made a very important contribution in developing mathematical Models. He is having some industrial experience also.
Dr.Indranath Bhattacharya, Assistant Prof. in Mathematics obtained his B.Sc(H) from Bidhan Nagar College & got M.Sc, & PhD. (Sc.) in Applied Math from Calcutta University. He has been teaching Engg. Mathematics& Applied Mathematics. He is doing research work in the field of Theoretical Physics in particular, on 'collective Oscillations of the Supernova Neutrinos ' and 'Neutrino Mass Model'. He visited Max Planck Institute in Germany in 2008 on invitation to do work on above subject. He has recently visited TIFR for his work on Supernova Neutrinos.
Mr.Ranjan Roy, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Technology had his B.E & M.E from Jadavpur University. He has been teaching Chem. Engg. Unit Operations, Fuels and Energy Audit. His current research interest is on Synthesis of Polycrystalline High Temp Semiconductors.
Mrs. Kabita Das, Sr. Lecturer in Electrical Engg. Obtained her B.Sc.(H) from Bethune College & B.Tech & M.Tech from Inst.of Radio Physics & Electronics, Calcutta University. She has been teaching Electrical Engineering, Control System and Circuit Theory. She has done an important work on the Development of Modified & Artificial Neural Network models for precise estimation of the mechanical properties of 18:8 Stainless Steel & submitted her Thesis on the same subject.
Mr. Subrata Ghosh, Associate Prof of Geology , had his BSc(H) from Presidency College, Kolkata & M.Sc from Calcutta University. As a State Scholar in Geology of the Govt. of West Bengal he went to the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, U.K) and obtained his M.Phil Degree from there. Earlier he taught Geology at both UG & PG levels at Durgapur Govt. College and served in administrative capacity as a Joint DPI in the Directorate of Public Instruction, WB at Bikash Bhavan, Kolkata. For his doctoral research he has been working on the Main Central Thrust Zone in the Higher Garhwal-Kumaun Himalayas.

Dr. Mausumi Maitra, Asst.Prof & Head of the Department, obtained her B.Sc.(H) from Presidency College and B.Tech,M.Tech & PhD. from Institute of Radio Physics & Electronics, Calcutta University. She has been teaching Microprocessor & Micro controller, Communications, and Computer Architecture& Organisation. Her current research interest is in VLSI Design & Image Processing. She has successfully completed an AICTE MODROB project for development of VLSI Lab. She has worked in CEERI, Pilani as Scientist for more than two years
Mrs. Paramita Dey, Lecturer, obtained her B.Tech from Kalyani Govt. Engg.College & M.Tech from Institute of Radio Physics & Electronics, Calcutta University. She has been teaching Digital Electronics, Data Communications& Networking, Mobile Communication Image Processing etc. Her current research interest is on VLSI design and development of LDMOS through simulation.
Mrs. Somdatta Chakraborty, Lecturer, did her B.Tech in Civil Engg from HBTI, Kanpur and M.Tech. in IT from Bengal Engg. & Sc. University. She had also worked in industry before joining in teaching. Dr. Prasanta Narayan Dutta, Associate Professor in Mathematics & Head of the Department, had his M.Sc.& M.Phil from Calcutta University & PhD from Jadavpur University. He has been teaching Mathematics, Operation Research , Graph Theory at different UG & PG level for more than three decades. His field of interest includes Numerical Analysis, Graph Theory& Functional Analysis. His Current research is about investigation of Fixed point of Functions in Metric Space, Probabilistic and Fuzzy Metric spaces. He has a considerable number of publications in his credit.
Mrs. Kalpana Saha, Sr. Lecturer obtained her BSc (H) in Physics from Calcutta Univ. B.Tech in Instrumentation & Electronics from Jadavpur University & M.E from B.E College( Cal.Univ). She has been teaching software Engg.,Introduction to computing and Principles of Programming language. At present she is doing work on 3G wireless communications for her Doctoral Thesis.
Mr. Bimal Pal, Lecturer had his B.Sc from Calcutta University followed by AMIE(ECE) and M.Tech(IT) from Bengal Engg & Sc. University. He has been teaching microprocessor, Communication Engg., Digital Signal Processing & Data Communication& Networking. He has long industrial experience in Electronic Industry.
