Principal Inderjeet Singh Bakshi, who made the announcement, told the second semester students that they were short of attendance. The incident took place about five minutes after the 8 am examination in Physics, offered to the second semester students of the BSc (Programme) course, had begun. My attendance is 36 per cent, but I was given the admit card after I produced a medical certificate. On Thursday, the principal came to the examination hall and said that I would be detained for a year, said Arif Ansari, a second semester student of BSc (Prog) Computer Science. It seems the twice-revised academic calendar of the university is to be blamed. The last working day was April 27, and we had to hold the first exam on May 3. The time that we got was not sufficient to tabulate attendance, and some students inadvertently got left out. We had informed 56 students earlier that they would be detained; the others could be informed only today, said Bakshi. The academic calendar of the university had to be revised twice in the last year to compensate for classes lost to the anti-semester agitation by teachers. Bakshi said all the students detained had less than 40 per cent attendance. The university requires 66 per cent. If the student has more than 40 and less than 60 per cent attendance, the principal can use his discretion to obtain a bond from students, pledging that they would compensate next year. I did not have to use it as all the students had less than 40 per cent attendance, he said.Bakshi said that the college had not come down as heavily on students before the first semester exams because first semester attendance is not as important as the second. We collect fees for the entire year. All students have to be promoted from the first to the second semester. On the other hand, second semester attendance is important as it dictates whether a student is promoted to the next year, said Bakshi. The admit cards of students whose exams begin the next week are yet to be distributed. Students belonging to the extra curricular activities quota are apprehensive, as they believe a new policy would affect their attendance. The principal has refused to give us attendance for practice sessions this year. Only participation is compensated for; and he has also asked us to provide a number of documents to prove that we were attending some event. The problem is that most festivals do not provide participation certificates in case we do not have a podium finish, said a student who is part of the theatre club.
