Profile of Central University of OrissaThe Central University of Orissa has been established by the Parliament vide the Central Universities Act, 2009 (No.-3C of 2009) at Koraput. As per the Act, its jurisdiction is the whole State of Orissa. It is one of the 15 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan Period to address to the concerns of equity and access and as per the policy of government to increase the access to quality higher education by people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate
Enrolment Ratio of less than the national average of 11%.
The CUO will start the construction of its campus on approximately 500 acres land to be offered by the State Government of Orissa in Koraput District. However, the University intends to initiate its academic
programme from this academic year, beginning from August, 2009. It will have the highest level of academic excellence sensitive to equity and access in enrolment and recruitment, so that it emerges as a
benchmarked higher education and research institution in the country.
The Central University will start its courses from August, 2009 onwards in a phased manner. Initially the University will start functioning in the premises of Jagannath Temple Trust, Koraput. The Trust will lease a part of its premises to the Central University of Orissa to start the academic activities immediately with least effort.
Koraput, geographically, was the largest district of Orissa which subsequently turned into four districts for administrative convenience. The major chunk of population in this district is dominated with Tribal communities. Traditionally the tribals are backward in socio-economic status. Although a large number of poverty alleviation programmes are implemented but still the region requires more attention to uplift their financial status to bring them into the mainstream of standard social system.
For about the past two decades, Koraput-Bolangir-Kalahandi districts have been put under the banner of KBK Backward Area. The attention of Central and State Government are focused to improve the standard of life in these areas. Flow of funds can get rid of the constraints to ameliorate the deplorable socio-economic condition of the tribals.
There is a marked dearth of academic institutions in these districts. The establishment of the Central University will not only bring about radical changes in the socio-economic status of the tribal communities of the KBK Area in the State of Orissa but also ameliorate the standard of life and open the doors of opportunities to the entire nation.
Orissa identifies 575 acres of land for central university
Bhubaneswar: The Orissa government has identified 575 acres of land in tribal-dominated Koraput district for setting up of a central university, an official said on Friday.
The land has been identified near the Koraput railway station, some 499 km from here, a senior official of the state higher education department told sources.
A five-member committee of the ministry of human resources development will visit the site on June 14 to make a final decision, the official said.
He added that it would take at least four to five years to complete the infrastructure after the land is transferred to the university.
The central government has already appointed Surabhi Banerjee as the first vice chancellor of the Koraput central university. We are making all efforts to start courses in the current academic session using infrastructure available nearby, the official said.
The varsity, the first central university in the state, would first start off with a school of languages and school of social sciences.
Central University of Orissa to begin classes from June
The Central University of Orissa (CUO) will begin classes from June.
In this connection, vice-chancellor of the university Surabhi Banerjee has held discussions with the state higher education secretary Madhusudan Padhi. Banerjee, a former VC of the Netaji Subash Open University, Kolkota, has wide experience in the administration of universities. While the university will have its campus in Koraput, efforts are on to locate a temporary campus near Bhubaneswar to start classes from the next academic year.
Banerjee has requested the state higher education department to provide a rented accommodation and the latter has agreed to the proposal. Banerjee is keen on to start at least 30 to 35 departments. However to start with, the university will have five subjects and later it would go on including other subjects, said sources. The Human Resource Development ministry has asked all the newly-created Central Universities to start classes from June. The CUs that have not yet identified land at the designated places can start the classes from the capital cities of the states, sources said.
VC of CUO Koraput makes the right move; pushes for a medical college
Central University, Koraput has requested the Centre to set up a medical college there in a bid to provide better medical facilities and educate local tribals.
I have suggested the human resources ministry to build a medical college here because I feel the area needs it. But the final nod is yet to come from the ministry, CU vice chancellor Surabhi Banerjee said.
Locals have to travel either to Vizag or to Berhampur to avail medical facilities and both these places are over 200 km away from here. The medical college will not only improve the quality of life of locals, but also provide scope for research in several diseases common here, Banerjee said. CU has also identified about 100 acre of land for the proposed medical college.
Banerjee said there are also plans to set up a nursing college. Several other need-based, region specific innovative courses will also be introduced. From the 2009-10 academic session, CU is initially beginning with five subjects. The school of language will offer English and Oriya while the school of social science will offer sociology, anthropology and tribal Studies and journalism and mass communication.
We will take 30 students in each department. The faculty is being recruitment and we will begin classes from August. we will also appoint guest lecturers to take classes, the vice-chancellor said.
CU also plans to introduce courses like maritime studies, disaster management, disaster management, environmental studies, rural development, and forestry under the choice based credit system. The university will initially function in the buildings of Silk Board and the local Jagannath temple until its own buildings are constructed.
