Profile of Tagore Government College of Education

The beginning of formal education in these islands started by making few young convicts from among the penal settlement of 1858 to conversant with English. Later these young convicts were trained for fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by the British authorities.

The first school was started in a hut and later shifted to a double-storied building situated at the site of the present D.C. Office. The school won popularity and by the year 1900 the local Administration had to open 6 new Primary Schools. The progress in the field of education was checked temporarily with the Japanese occupation of these islands in 1942.

In the first year of Countrys Independence (1947-48) the first Govt. Boys High School at Port Blair was started along with 8 Primary Schools in the adjoining villages. There was one Middle School at Car Nicobar in the Nicobar Group of Islands.

The increase in number of the Primary Schools was rapid as compared to availability of trained teachers. So, the Administration had to open Teachers Training School at Port Blair in August 1958.

As these islands are cut off and far away, good and qualified graduate and post graduate teachers could not be attracted to these islands. In order to meet the growing demand of such trained teachers in these islands, the A and N Administration, with the recognition of UGC and affiliation of Panjab University came forward to start a College to provide the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in the academic year 1981-82.

The Tagore Govt. College of Education (TGCE) was established in the year 1981 and affiliated to the Panjab University. In the same year the UGC has granted permanent affiliation to this College. Thereafter on inception of newly constituted Pondicherry Central University, in the year 1987-88, the affiliation of the College was shifted to it.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) came into existence through Act No. 73 of 1993 of the Parliament and vested with statutory authority for achieving planned and coordinated development of the Teacher Education system throughout the country and it has become mandatory to all the Colleges of Teacher Education to get recognition from this Apex Body on Teacher Education. Accordingly, the TGCE also got its recognition from the NCTE with effect from 1997. This College, which was earlier known as Govt. B.Ed. College was renamed as Tagore Govt. College of Education (TGCE) on 14th August, 1998 in a gala function held in the College premises as a part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of India's Independence.

Apart from Pre-Service Teacher Training Programme the College also caters the needs of working people. This College has a full-fledged study centre of Institute of Correspondence Education, University of Madras. During the previous academic year more than 200 candidates obtained spot admission at this centre in different UG and PG courses including MCA and continuing their studies in different faculties of the institute. TGCE has also a centre of examination for Institute of Ecology & Environment; New Delhi It is also an examination centre for admission to RIMC, Dehradun and Sainik School, Purulia.

There are plans to introduce P.G., Research Courses and Integrated Courses in Education in the coming years to meet the growing demands of better trained teachers.

A new College building has been inaugurated on 29th April 2004. This building has all the facilities such as games room, ET lab in the basement floor, reception, science lab, information centre, class rooms, correspondence rooms in the ground floor, administrative block, classrooms, office rooms, record rooms, language lab etc. in the first floor and library cum reading hall, classrooms, staffroom, AV Hall, Computer lab, Research lab etc. in the second floor.

Proposal to upgrade TGCE into the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), a centrally sponsored scheme of Govt. of India, is under active consideration of the Administration. Necessary scheme is being prepared by the College for onward submission. Once it is upgraded into IASE the activities of the College will enhance and apart from the existing pre-service teacher training programme, the in-service training programmes, orientation, refresher courses, workshops and seminar pertaining to secondary and senior secondary education will be taken up by the College. Research and innovations in education will be the special features of TGCE after up gradation.

Although the TGCE is in its infancy stage today like a sapling but tomorrow it will grow up into a huge tree, a strong establishment. Today there are only the B.Ed. and trainees of integrated courses as students. But when PG, in-service programmes and Research Courses are introduced then it will come to its full strength. Today the TGCE stands silently in a corner watching the passing time with a few students walking up and down, but it dreams of a tomorrow, a better tomorrow with the crowds of students laughing and running up and down wiping away this isolation and silence for ever. Every long journey begins with a single step.

The enthusiastic staff is ready to undergo any hardship to materialize this dream and the TGCE awakes from its long slumber and turns towards a new era with lots of hopes and dreams.
