Kanya Maha Vidyalaya affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is one of the oldest institution in the country. Established as early as in 1886,the institution under the leadership of Lala Dev Raj â€“the founder patron,has grown into a major center of excellence in Punjab. Lala Devraj the disciple of Swami Dayanand Saraswati and a visionary was indeed the architect of this futuristic institution for the benefit of women at a time when the women were totally deprived of educational opportunities. It is significant to note that despite the existing socio-political conditions and considerable opposition from the masses against women education, the institution has covered many a milestones in its evolution to the present stage. Presently the college has 26.56 acres of Eco-friendly campus in the Jalandhar city. College is offering a wide range of curricular programs in Arts, Fine Arts, Science (Non-Medical, Medical), Home Science and Commerce. . This college is also offering a few innovative job oriented courses like BCA, BSc(IT), BCAM,BCom(Professional) , B.Sc. (Computer Science). Presently the college has 72 Permanent teachers 35 Temporary, 7 Part Time faculty Members. In the current year 1639 students are admitted to this college (1446 Under Graduate, 145 Post Graduate and 48 Diploma Courses).
The college prepared a self-detailed comprehensive report and submitted it to NAAC for its evaluation. NAAC constituted committee consisting of MR. M. Malla Reddy, Former VC Osmania University as Chair Person, Dr. Mrs. K.K Tandon Former Deputy Director, Govt of Haryana and Dr. Ashok M. Chavan, Head Botany Dept and former Principal VasantRao Naik Mahavidyalaya, Auranagabad (Maharastra State) as a Member of Coordination Committee visited the institution for Accreditation and Assessments .The peer committee visited the college on 16,17 February 2004, examined the department wise facilties.The peer team also had detailed interaction with the faculty members, students, parents, Alumni and non-teaching staff members. The information provided by the management, Principal, faculty and others has given the necessary insights in assessing the quality of the Institution. Based on this exercise the team has submitted the following report.

Curricular Aspects
Kanya MahaVidyalaya is a multi faculty college of higher education affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The college is offering a wide range of subjects both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. The college being the pioneer in women education has put in all possible efforts to empower women through quality education. The college is offering a total of 26 programs: - which include 4 Certificate courses, 10 Undergraduate, 5 Postgraduate and 7 Postgraduate Diplomas. Keeping in view the financial constraints the college has started a few innovative Career Oriented Courses on self-finance basis and wide range of elective subjects and non-core options with in the framework of university rules. The college follows the curriculum prescribed by the university, which is mandatory. The missions and goals of the institution are reflected through its organizational setup. It is important to note that the college has been offering subjects like Music (Instrumental and Vocal) since its inception and has also added courses like Home science, Food Science at degree level.
The courses, which help girls discover their hidden talent, channelise their potential and empower them, are introduced after careful examination. The college offers Hindi, English, Music and Computer Science at Post Graduate level. Honours courses are offered in English, Hindi, Psychology, Punjabi and Economics. Post Graduate Diploma Courses in Counselling, E-Commerce and Internet Application, Information Technology, Textile Designing, Dress Designing and Interior Decoration also form part of the curriculum.
The range of program options offered by the college is in tune with the goals and objectives of the institution, which leads to economic empowerment of women. The responsibility of revising and restructuring of the syllabi mainly lies on the affiliating University. The faculty members of the college are included as Members of various Board of Studies. The college has established linkages with local industries, which help in providing field experience to the students.
The college organized one National Level Seminar on â€œIdentity Crisis of Working Women with special reference to Pursuits of Womenâ€ on 16thâ€“17th March 2002, which was attended by several eminent academicians. The peer team recommends that the college may organize several such conferences to make the institution much more vibrant in addressing the problems of women education.
The college has already applied for career oriented add-on courses parallel to the regular B.A, B.COM and B.Sc program and the proposal have been accepted by the U.G.C. The program selected by the college under UGC assistance has great relevance to changing community needs. The peer team therefore recommends that the management may introduce these programs during the next academic year i.e. 2004-2005 on priority basis.

Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

The students are admitted on the basis of entrance tests, interviews, and academic records depending on the course the student wishes to join. Students excelling in academics, games, and co-curricular activities are given preference at the time of admission. The college has introduced a healthy tradition of offering bridge/remedial courses to the students with low performance, without charging any extra fees. In this endeavour peer team noticed with appreciation that the regular teachers offer their services without any remuneration. In addition to regular teachers the college is hiring adequate numbers of part time teachers on payment basis. The college as a part of its support structure organizes coaching classes for BBA, BCA , BSc(IT) . The advanced learners are also provided necessary guidance by their respective teachers in addition to extra ready material and open access to library.
The syllabi is unitized at the beginning of the academic session and the teachers prepare the term wise teaching plan in advance. College has introduced several innovative approaches in the instructional technology in addition to conventional methods of teaching. The interactive learning approach through discussion, seminars is adopted and , educational tours and trips to historical places, art and craft melas, sangeet sammelan, visit to commercial houses are organized as value added extra ordinary curricular activities.

The teaching days are 129 which require to be raised to 180 as per UGC norms. The College has a process of continuous assessment of students through short class tests, monthly tests, terminal college exams, selective assignments, etc.
The College has freedom and resources to employ ad hoc teachers depending upon the work load of the Departments.The teachers are recruited as per UGC/ University/Govt. guidelines. The Management has recruited several teachers for self- financed courses. The college has 72 permanent ,35 temporary and 07 Part- time faculty members:11 Ph.ds, 28 M.Phils and 70 Post graduate teachers . In view of PG teaching , the Management should encourage the faculty members to acquire Ph.d . degree. The teachers of the institution have participated in several seminars, conferences, and refresher courses for updating their knowledge. It is worth noting that some of the senior teachers have been invited as resource persons by other institutions & universities.

It is commendable that one of the teachers in Fine Arts -- Ms. Manan Sachdeva has been awarded Rajya kalakar by the C.M. of Punjab State.

Research, Consultancy and Extension

It is noted that the college is a composite institution offering programs professional as well as vocational. The major focus of the college appears to be on professional degrees. However one of the important dimensions, which need immediate attention, is research. The peer team was informed during its visit that the college is undergoing major structural changes by creating exclusive infrastructure for Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses, which may facilitate in promotion of major research activities in tune with the philosophy of higher education. However some senior faculty members in the departments English, Hindi and Music (Instrumental) have evinced a keen interest in research and publication which needs to be emulated by other faculty members.

Extension activities related to the felt needs of the community, such as village adoption, adult education and literacy, health and hygiene awareness, environment awareness, medical camps have been undertaken. Of these, major activities have been undertaken by NSS unit in collaboration with NGO s and GO s. Individual departments may initiate extension and outreach activities with an aim to strengthen the institution -community interaction. At the same time the active involvement of some faculty members is desirable.

The placement cell, counselling cell are rendering a yeomans service to the college. Shodh Kendra Sansthan is promoting research aptitude among students. However, creation of a grievance redressal cell for the benefits of the prospective users in the college is desirable. This may generate some revenue, which can be apportioned to the expert/consultants and other developmental activities. College may think of publishing list of experts and resource persons through the calendar, prospectus, magazine and other publications, so that the prospective users can utilize the service of the same.
The peer team members have noticed a few significant activities finding of which are published in the form of college journals like â€“ Innovations, Drishti aur Srishti ,Sukriti. In addition to this the teachers are also engaged in promoting creative programs through Snigdha Pryas and Trivani to promote skill for writing poetry ,pros and linguistic skills amongst the students resulting in their development.

Infrastructure and Learning Resources :

The college is extended over an area of 26.56 acres in the Jalandhar city. During the past 116 years the college has gradually expanded its physical infrastructure in the form of building, laboratories, library, hostel blocks, guest room, gymnasium, play ground, conference hall, vehicle parking shed and auditorium. These facilities are adequate for offering the regular college courses and extra curricular activities. The maintenance of the infrastructure is undertaken by the college on regular basis .
It is significant to note that the college is extremely sound in terms of its financial resources which is evident from the budget report of the institution.
The library has over 50000 books. The library remains opened from 0900 hrs to 1900 hrs. The college subscribes to both Indian and Foreign journals. A set of famous encyclopedias and rare books are also available. Audio facility and xerox facility are available in the library. A separate book bank section helps the weaker section students. Internet facility may be provided in the library so as to give the faculty and researchers easy access for internet browsing. Considering a wide range of curricular options offered by the institution, its vision and mission it is necessary that the management pays greater attention to the expansion of library facilities â€“ the backbone of the institution of the institution. A well developed library can be a source of inspiration for study and research by students as well as faculty members.

The college has provided central computer facility. The college has over 150 computers with a separate internet laboratory. The working hours of the computer centre are from 0845 to 1615 hrs. Apart from the computer facilities available at the computer centre , college administrative block also has computers. The computer department has developed various application packages like Payroll system, admission system, automation etc. The computers and their accessories are maintained either by maintenance contractor or by calling engineers. The computer facility may be augmented to meet the growing needs of the students.

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya is known for producing National and International players, artists in Fine Arts, Dance and Music. The students are given excellent facilities for training in Athletics, Volley-ball, Kho-kho, Basket ball, Hand Ball and Ball Badminton. A standard size swimming pool is also available within the premises. The peer team deeply impressed by national and international sports players of the college in Hand ball, Cricket, Football, Basket ball, Volley Ball, Tackwando, Hockey and Swimming. Sports students are encouraged by the college by extending several incentives like freeship , scholarships, sports equipment, free boarding and lodging facility.
The medical center of the College has all clinical facilities. A full time resident nurse and a part- time doctor for health service of students, teaching and non-teaching staff members are available. The college may introduce the system of annual medical check up for students. The sports facilities available in the college are: Volley-ball, Kho-Kho, Basket-ball ,Hand-ball, Ball-badminton, Soft-ball, Tennis ground, Swimming pool and a multi-purpose Gymnasium. The students have been actively participating in sports and have won â€˜General Sports Trophyâ€™ in the University sports for 13 years consecutively. Students have bagged medals at the inter-college, University, inter-university state and national level. The girls have represented the country for international tournaments. Free education, free hostel accommodation and free meals are given to outstanding sportspersons. In 2000-2001 academic years the Sports Authority of India awarded five students scholarships.
The College has four hostel blocks, which can accommodate more than 800 students. In addition to the four blocks, the college has recently constructed a highly modernized dinning hall. Two newly built hostels provide cubicle facility exclusively for merit scholars. Hostels are equipped with modern amenities. The hostel provides an extensive opportunity for community living and an environment for promoting National and emotional integration. There is warm relationship between the students and the hostel staff. The Principal pay personal and special attention to the students. In the opinion of the peer team the hostel of this college is an important dimension of this institution and deserves rich compliments.

Student Support and Progression

The College has a high percentage of passes, first divisions including a number of ranks in the University examinations. About 60 % students appear for the qualifying exam after the minimum period of study. The drop out rate is 5%. The College brings out an updated prospectus every year before the admissions start. The prospectus includes a profile of infrastructure facilities, courses of study, admission rules, eligibility for admission, general rules, sports facilities, fee structure, code of conduct, awards & medals, internal assessment, incentive for facilities to brilliant and meritorious students, etc. Overseas students are admitted as per University rules. Financial aid and free books are provided to needy and outstanding students. Under â€˜Earn While you Learn Schemeâ€™, the poor students have been enabled to pursue higher studies. Some teachers have also adopted students. During 2002-2003 some selected students awarded various types of scholarships. In addition to formal Counselling Cell in the College, the teachers informally provide academic and personal Counselling to students. The students and teachers of P.G. Diploma in Counselling are always available to students for academic, vocational guidance. In view of various job-oriented courses, the College has set up a Placement Cell to establish linkage with industrial and commercial establishments and other professional bodies and organize on-campus interviews. The College encourages entrepreneurship by organizing lectures and interaction with successful entrepreneurs. The College has Extra-Curricular Activities Committee which gears up students for creative learning and prepares students for Youth festivals, debates, music competitions, painting, dance, and games and also arranges educational trips/ excursions. In keeping with the aims and mission of the college a deep love and awareness of Indiaâ€™s rich culture and ethos is inculcated. One student Ms. Gurpinder Kaur is an artist in making. She has brought laurels to the college by winning first prize in All India National Youth Festival for four consecutive years. She has been honored with a cash award of Rs. One Lac by the Chief Minister of Punjab.
The college has an Alumni association. The old students keep in touch with college and the present students. Several Alumni hold a prominent position in various bodies of life as academicians, bureaucrats, social workers and sport person of National and International repute.College is taking efforts to develop the overall personality of the students by innovating them in several association like Clubs, N.S.S., NC.C., games, sports, preparation of magazines, dance/music competition.

Organization and Management

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya is one of the best-governed institutions of higher education in the state of Punjab. A galaxy of academicians and eminent personalities are associated with the management, responsible for overseeing overall functioning of the institution, recruitment of staff, discipline, financial management and developmental activities of the college. The management particularly examines the qualifications of the faculty at the time of recruitment and gives highest importance to qualifications and merit especially in the case of selection of the Head of the Institution of i.e. Principal. The Principal with the support of deans of different faculties, heads of the departments and all other faculty members participate in the decision making process which creates an organizational climate â€“participatory democracy. The Principal and the faculty also ensure regular teaching and evaluation by going through the performance of the students in continuous as well as semester examinations. The Management and Principal encourage the active participation of the teachers and every member of non-teaching staff in the effective management of the Institution. The non-teaching staff are provided and trained in computer education to ensure the efficient administration of the college programs.
The college has introduced a unit system of â€œEarn While You Learnâ€ to motivate students. However this needs to be scientifically structured through a special mechanism for the implementation scheme. Faculty members generously contribute for the staff welfare fund on monthly basis, which is used for cause of needy employees.

Healthy Practices

The Principal and heads of the departments keep a constant check on the performance of the teachers to check the quality internally. An internal quality assurance cell is created and maintained for regular assessment of the teacherâ€™s self-appraisal reports.
The college lays great stress on personalized attention to prepare the students for professional avenues. Student friendly initiatives like diagnostic and remedial classes in a zero period are undertaken on regular basis. Free coaching classes for the benefit of students are held during summer vacation to fight the menace of private tuitions.
The college is sensitized to latest managerial concepts like strategic planning, teamwork, decision-making and computerizations. Several committees are formed to work in close co-ordination and to promote smooth functioning of the institution.

The college imparts value-based education . Havan Yagya is performed in the beginning of every year followed by Saraswati Puja , whereas, Amar Jyoti a symbolic solemn function marks the conclusion of the session. Jalandhar college principal murdered

Jalandhar: The principal of the Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV), the oldest college for women in this Punjab region, was Sunday morning found murdered along with three other employees.

The bodies of principal Rita Bawa and others, two male guards and a cook, were first seen by her maid servant Santosh at her residence within the college campus Sunday morning. The maid informed other college staff, who called the police.

The multiple murders came as an embarrassment for the Punjab police as the state government was organising the Punjabi non-resident Indians (NRI) conference here Sunday.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, ministers and top political leaders and officials and hundreds of NRIs participated in Sunday s conference here amid tight security measures in and around the city.

The murders have left the Jalandhar police baffled. Jalandhar zone inspector general Sanjiv Kalra said that investigations into the killings were in progress.

"From the available evidence, it is clear that the entry of the killers was not forced because the principal had opened the front door for someone. It appears that the killers knew her," Jalandhar district police chief Arpit Shukla said.

Bawa, a divorcee in her 50s, lived alone in the principal s lodge on the college campus. She was apparently hit by a blunt-edged weapon and her throat was slit with a knife.

Police officials investigating the murder said that robbery did not seem the motive, as her ornaments were intact. However, her room was found ransacked by her killers, indicating that they could be looking for some documents.

The slain principal s aged father Krishan Lal Bawa said that she did not have any dispute with anyone and did not have any enemies.

The police also believe that the three employees were murdered as they must have witnessed the crime and challenged the culprits. The employees have been identified as Shamsudeen, Tarsem Lal and cook Kishore Kumar.

On suspicion, the police rounded up some labourers working on the college campus.

The college, set up in 1886, is one of the oldest and most well known women s educational institutions in the region, and draws its girl students from all northern states.

In the current year 1639 students are admitted to this college (1446 Under Graduate, 145 Post Graduate and 48 Diploma Courses).

The college prepared a self-detailed comprehensive report and submitted it to NAAC for its evaluation. NAAC constituted committee consisting of MR. M. Malla Reddy, Former VC Osmania University as Chair Person, Dr. Mrs. K.K Tandon Former Deputy Director, Govt of Haryana and Dr. Ashok M. Chavan, Head Botany Dept and former Principal VasantRao Naik Mahavidyalaya, Auranagabad (Maharastra State) as a Member of Coordination Committee visited the institution for Accreditation and Assessments .The peer committee visited the college on 16,17 February 2004, examined the department wise facilties.The peer team also had detailed interaction with the faculty members, students, parents, Alumni and non-teaching staff members. The information provided by the management, Principal, faculty and others has given the necessary insights in assessing the quality of the Institution. Based on this exercise the team has submitted the following report.

Section 2: Criterion wise analysis
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
Kanya MahaVidyalaya is a multi faculty college of higher education affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The college is offering a wide range of subjects both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. The college being the pioneer in women education has put in all possible efforts to empower women through quality education. The college is offering a total of 26 programs: - which include 4 Certificate courses, 10 Undergraduate, 5 Postgraduate and 7 Postgraduate Diplomas. Keeping in view the financial constraints the college has started a few innovative Career Oriented Courses on self-finance basis and wide range of elective subjects and non-core options with in the framework of university rules. The college follows the curriculum prescribed by the university, which is mandatory. The missions and goals of the institution are reflected through its organizational setup. It is important to note that the college has been offering subjects like Music (Instrumental and Vocal) since its inception and has also added courses like Home science, Food Science at degree level.

The courses, which help girls discover their hidden talent, channelise their potential and empower them, are introduced after careful examination. The college offers Hindi, English, Music and Computer Science at Post Graduate level. Honours courses are offered in English, Hindi, Psychology, Punjabi and Economics. Post Graduate Diploma Courses in Counselling, E-Commerce and Internet Application, Information Technology, Textile Designing, Dress Designing and Interior Decoration also form part of the curriculum.

The range of program options offered by the college is in tune with the goals and objectives of the institution, which leads to economic empowerment of women. The responsibility of revising and restructuring of the syllabi mainly lies on the affiliating University. The faculty members of the college are included as Members of various Board of Studies. The college has established linkages with local industries, which help in providing field experience to the students.

The college organized one National Level Seminar on â€˜Identity Crisis of Working Women with special reference to Pursuits of Womenâ€™ on 16thâ€“17th March 2002, which was attended by several eminent academicians. The peer team recommends that the college may organize several such conferences to make the institution much more vibrant in addressing the problems of women education.

The college has already applied for career oriented add-on courses parallel to the regular B.A, B.COM and B.Sc program and the proposal have been accepted by the U.G.C. The program selected by the college under UGC assistance has great relevance to changing community needs. The peer team therefore recommends that the management may introduce these programs during the next academic year i.e. 2004-2005 on priority basis.

Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation
The students are admitted on the basis of entrance tests, interviews, and academic records depending on the course the student wishes to join. Students excelling in academics, games, and co-curricular activities are given preference at the time of admission. The college has introduced a healthy tradition of offering bridge/remedial courses to the students with low performance, without charging any extra fees. In this endeavour peer team noticed with appreciation that the regular teachers offer their services without any remuneration. In addition to regular teachers the college is hiring adequate numbers of part time teachers on payment basis. The college as a part of its support structure organizes coaching classes for BBA, BCA , BSc(IT) . The advanced learners are also provided necessary guidance by their respective teachers in addition to extra ready material and open access to library.

The syllabi is unitized at the beginning of the academic session and the teachers prepare the term wise teaching plan in advance. College has introduced several innovative approaches in the instructional technology in addition to conventional methods of teaching. The interactive learning approach through discussion, seminars is adopted and , educational tours and trips to historical places, art and craft melas, sangeet sammelan, visit to commercial houses are organized as value added extra ordinary curricular activities.

The teaching days are 129 which require to be raised to 180 as per UGC norms. The College has a process of continuous assessment of students through short class tests, monthly tests, terminal college exams, selective assignments, etc.

The College has freedom and resources to employ ad hoc teachers depending upon the work load of the Departments.The teachers are recruited as per UGC/ University/Govt. guidelines. The Management has recruited several teachers for self- financed courses. The college has 72 permanent ,35 temporary and 07 Part- time faculty members:11 Ph.ds, 28 M.Phils and 70 Post graduate teachers . In view of PG teaching , the Management should encourage the faculty members to acquire Ph.d . degree. The teachers of the institution have participated in several seminars, conferences, and refresher courses for updating their knowledge. It is worth noting that some of the senior teachers have been invited as resource persons by other institutions & universities.

It is commendable that one of the teachers in Fine Arts - Ms. Manan Sachdeva has been awarded Rajya kalakar by the C.M. of Punjab State.

Criterion 3: Research, Consultancy and Extension
It is noted that the college is a composite institution offering programs professional as well as vocational. The major focus of the college appears to be on professional degrees. However one of the important dimensions, which need immediate attention, is research. The peer team was informed during its visit that the college is undergoing major structural changes by creating exclusive infrastructure for Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses, which may facilitate in promotion of major research activities in tune with the philosophy of higher education. However some senior faculty members in the departments English, Hindi and Music (Instrumental) have evinced a keen interest in research and publication which needs to be emulated by other faculty members.

Extension activities related to the felt needs of the community, such as village adoption, adult education and literacy, health and hygiene awareness, environment awareness, medical camps have been undertaken. Of these, major activities have been undertaken by NSS unit in collaboration with NGO s and GO s. Individual departments may initiate extension and outreach activities with an aim to strengthen the institution -community interaction. At the same time the active involvement of some faculty members is desirable.

The placement cell, counselling cell are rendering a yeomans service to the college. Shodh Kendra Sansthan is promoting research aptitude among students. However, creation of a grievance redressal cell for the benefits of the prospective users in the college is desirable. This may generate some revenue, which can be apportioned to the expert/consultants and other developmental activities. College may think of publishing list of experts and resource persons through the calendar, prospectus, magazine and other publications, so that the prospective users can utilize the service of the same.

The peer team members have noticed a few significant activities finding of which are published in the form of college journals like â€“ Innovations, Drishti aur Srishti ,Sukriti. In addition to this the teachers are also engaged in promoting creative programs through Snigdha Pryas and Trivani to promote skill for writing poetry ,pros and linguistic skills amongst the students resulting in their development.

Criterion 4: Infrastructure and Learning Resources :
The college is extended over an area of 26.56 acres in the Jalandhar city. During the past 116 years the college has gradually expanded its physical infrastructure in the form of building, laboratories, library, hostel blocks, guest room, gymnasium, play ground, conference hall, vehicle parking shed and auditorium. These facilities are adequate for offering the regular college courses and extra curricular activities. The maintenance of the infrastructure is undertaken by the college on regular basis .

It is significant to note that the college is extremely sound in terms of its financial resources which is evident from the budget report of the institution.

The library has over 50000 books. The library remains opened from 0900 hrs to 1900 hrs. The college subscribes to both Indian and Foreign journals. A set of famous encyclopedias and rare books are also available. Audio facility and xerox facility are available in the library. A separate book bank section helps the weaker section students. Internet facility may be provided in the library so as to give the faculty and researchers easy access for internet browsing. Considering a wide range of curricular options offered by the institution, its vision and mission it is necessary that the management pays greater attention to the expansion of library facilities â€“ the backbone of the institution of the institution. A well developed library can be a source of inspiration for study and research by students as well as faculty members.

The college has provided central computer facility. The college has over 150 computers with a separate internet laboratory. The working hours of the computer centre are from 0845 to 1615 hrs. Apart from the computer facilities available at the computer centre , college administrative block also has computers. The computer department has developed various application packages like Payroll system, admission system, automation etc. The computers and their accessories are maintained either by maintenance contractor or by calling engineers. The computer facility may be augmented to meet the growing needs of the students.

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya is known for producing National and International players, artists in Fine Arts, Dance and Music. The students are given excellent facilities for training in Athletics, Volley-ball, Kho-kho, Basket ball, Hand Ball and Ball Badminton. A standard size swimming pool is also available within the premises. The peer team deeply impressed by national and international sports players of the college in Hand ball, Cricket, Football, Basket ball, Volley Ball, Tackwando, Hockey and Swimming. Sports students are encouraged by the college by extending several incentives like freeship , scholarships, sports equipment, free boarding and lodging facility.

The medical center of the College has all clinical facilities. A full time resident nurse and a part- time doctor for health service of students, teaching and non-teaching staff members are available. The college may introduce the system of annual medical check up for students. The sports facilities available in the college are: Volley-ball, Kho-Kho, Basket-ball ,Hand-ball, Ball-badminton, Soft-ball, Tennis ground, Swimming pool and a multi-purpose Gymnasium. The students have been actively participating in sports and have won â€˜General Sports Trophyâ€™ in the University sports for 13 years consecutively. Students have bagged medals at the inter-college, University, inter-university state and national level. The girls have represented the country for international tournaments. Free education, free hostel accommodation and free meals are given to outstanding sportspersons. In 2000-2001 academic years the Sports Authority of India awarded five students scholarships.

The College has four hostel blocks, which can accommodate more than 800 students. In addition to the four blocks, the college has recently constructed a highly modernized dinning hall. Two newly built hostels provide cubicle facility exclusively for merit scholars. Hostels are equipped with modern amenities. The hostel provides an extensive opportunity for community living and an environment for promoting National and emotional integration. There is warm relationship between the students and the hostel staff. The Principal pay personal and special attention to the students. In the opinion of the peer team the hostel of this college is an important dimension of this institution and deserves rich compliments.

Criterion 5: Student Support and Progression
The College has a high percentage of passes, first divisions including a number of ranks in the University examinations. About 60 % students appear for the qualifying exam after the minimum period of study. The drop out rate is 5%. The College brings out an updated prospectus every year before the admissions start. The prospectus includes a profile of infrastructure facilities, courses of study, admission rules, eligibility for admission, general rules, sports facilities, fee structure, code of conduct, awards & medals, internal assessment, incentive for facilities to brilliant and meritorious students, etc. Overseas students are admitted as per University rules. Financial aid and free books are provided to needy and outstanding students. Under â€˜Earn While you Learn Schemeâ€™, the poor students have been enabled to pursue higher studies. Some teachers have also adopted students. During 2002-2003 some selected students awarded various types of scholarships. In addition to formal Counselling Cell in the College, the teachers informally provide academic and personal Counselling to students.

The students and teachers of P.G. Diploma in Counselling are always available to students for academic, vocational guidance. In view of various job-oriented courses, the College has set up a Placement Cell to establish linkage with industrial and commercial establishments and other professional bodies and organize on-campus interviews. The College encourages entrepreneurship by organizing lectures and interaction with successful entrepreneurs. The College has Extra-Curricular Activities Committee which gears up students for creative learning and prepares students for Youth festivals, debates, music competitions, painting, dance, and games and also arranges educational trips/ excursions. In keeping with the aims and mission of the college a deep love and awareness of Indiaâ€™s rich culture and ethos is inculcated. One student Ms. Gurpinder Kaur is an artist in making. She has brought laurels to the college by winning first prize in All India National Youth Festival for four consecutive years. She has been honored with a cash award of Rs. One Lac by the Chief Minister of Punjab.

The college has an Alumni association. The old students keep in touch with college and the present students. Several Alumni hold a prominent position in various bodies of life as academicians, bureaucrats, social workers and sport person of National and International repute.College is taking efforts to develop the overall personality of the students by innovating them in several association like Clubs, N.S.S., NC.C., games, sports, preparation of magazines, dance/music competition.

Criterion 6: Organization and Management
Kanya Maha Vidyalaya is one of the best-governed institutions of higher education in the state of Punjab. A galaxy of academicians and eminent personalities are associated with the management, responsible for overseeing overall functioning of the institution, recruitment of staff, discipline, financial management and developmental activities of the college. The management particularly examines the qualifications of the faculty at the time of recruitment and gives highest importance to qualifications and merit especially in the case of selection of the Head of the Institution of i.e. Principal. The Principal with the support of deans of different faculties, heads of the departments and all other faculty members participate in the decision making process which creates an organizational climate â€“participatory democracy. The Principal and the faculty also ensure regular teaching and evaluation by going through the performance of the students in continuous as well as semester examinations. The Management and Principal encourage the active participation of the teachers and every member of non-teaching staff in the effective management of the Institution. The non-teaching staff are provided and trained in computer education to ensure the efficient administration of the college programs.

The college has introduced a unit system of â€˜Earn While You Learnâ€™ to motivate students. However this needs to be scientifically structured through a special mechanism for the implementation scheme. Faculty members generously contribute for the staff welfare fund on monthly basis, which is used for cause of needy employees.

Criterion 7: Healthy Practices
The Principal and heads of the departments keep a constant check on the performance of the teachers to check the quality internally. An internal quality assurance cell is created and maintained for regular assessment of the teacherâ€™s self-appraisal reports.

The college lays great stress on personalized attention to prepare the students for professional avenues. Student friendly initiatives like diagnostic and remedial classes in a zero period are undertaken on regular basis. Free coaching classes for the benefit of students are held during summer vacation to fight the menace of private tuitions.

The college is sensitized to latest managerial concepts like strategic planning, teamwork, decision-making and computerizations. Several committees are formed to work in close co-ordination and to promote smooth functioning of the institution.

The college imparts value-based education . Havan Yagya is performed in the beginning of every year followed by Saraswati Puja , whereas, Amar Jyoti a symbolic solemn function marks the conclusion of the session. The organizational climate of the institution acts as a very strong substratum for promoting sense of nationalism and patriotism among the students.

The college makes effort towards all round personality development of students through N.C.C., N.S.S., Cultural programmes, Debates, Quiz, Art and Craft, Music competitions and other extra-curricular activities. Summer courses in painting, dress designing, textile designing are undertaken for girls to improve their self-employment evenues.

Kanya MahaVidyalaya Jalandhar , is one of the most outstanding institutions founded with a philosophy to emancipate Women from traditional deprivation and subjugation . True to its philosophy it was founded by â€˜Lala Dev Raj Jiâ€™ an apostle for freedom of Women .Going through the history of this college ,it is to be noticed that it has achieved many landmarks and achievements which speak volumes about immense services the college has rendered from the year 1886. â€˜ Lala Dev Raj Jiâ€™ who was a true disciple of â€˜Swami Dayanand Sarswatiâ€™ the founder of â€˜Arya Samaj â€˜ took the lead with the sacred commitment to uplift the women from the oppression and discrimination.

This Institution, which was conceived on a very modest scale of 08 girls, has evolved into one of the major institutions imparting education to more than two thousand students pursing several academic disciplines including both conventional and modern. The management, Principal and faculty with a commitment to offer broad curriculum options have introduced several innovative job oriented courses. The peer team was deeply impressed with the fact that the students of this college have demonstrated their concern for International Peace and Understanding with a sense of humanism by organizing 11th Sep. as Black Day . reflecting the commendable concern for the international peace .

The students of the college have brought many laurels in Arts, Fine Arts , Sports by winning National Awards-- .a commendable achievement which explains the significance of KMV as the leading center of excellence both for academic pursuits and other dimensions of education.

The significance of the institution is evident from its great tradition of empowerment of women from its very inception. One cannot imagine a more significant healthy tradition than the tradition of empowerment of women- the dream of visionary founders of the institution. Institution indeed stands not only for a few healthy traditions confined to the institution but extends its philosophy to broader community through women education. It is also noted by the peer team that the college places a special emphasis in promoting Hindi and Sanskrit language to inculcate some of National consciousness and new concept of Renaissance. The college has introduced several incentives especially cash awards in order to effectively propagate Hindi, Sanskrit , Music and Dance specially cash awards. By virtue of some commendable activities the college as an institution has emerged as a institution of National Importance.

The national importance of this institution is evident from the fact that four Presidents of India and Five Prime Ministers visited the college . This speaks volumes about the eminence of this institution.

In short college today stands one of the leading centers of learning and contributes to the empowerment of women through its multidimensional programs.

The peer team however would like to offer following suggestions for the future development of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya.

*The peer team is of the opinion that the college can be transformed into a major center of excellence provided it opts for autonomy which is a necessary condition for the academic growth of any institution .

*The college with a view to reconstructing some of its academic activities may constitute a committee of experts who can reflect on the existing curriculum and

*College is not in a position to offer the courses in emerging areas of knowledge like Masters in Management for want of academic freedom . It is therefore pertinent to note that management should strive to attain autonomy and mobilize the resources for offering such significant programs.

*The world of learning and world of working should go hand in hand . The peer team was impressed with the commitment of faculty and students in teaching learning process. For transforming this institution into a real community centered institutions the college needs to develop strong relations with local industry and export houses

*It is also desirable that the college establishes a regular Research and Development Cell to promote and monitor research activities and also to generate required finances for the purpose

*Life long learning is a key to learning society from this perspective it is necessary that every teacher should undertake research both in the interest of updating knowledge and for improvement of their qualification.

*The college requires adequate research facilities to motivate both faculty members and the students in their study and research . The management needs to invest substantial amount for updating the library and facilities in tune with the image of this institution.

College has remarkable strengths for updating its programs in almost all depths in Post Graduate levels. The effect of the institution for inclusion of Post Graduate Courses in several disciplines can transform oldest and Historical important institution into a Deemed University.

Peer team members would like to place on record their appreciation for the worm hospitality and cooperation extended by the Principal , Management and Faculty of the college. Rita Bawa murder: Court remands 3 to judicial custody till August 13

Ludhiana, August 02, 2008 Three accused in the high profile Rita Bawa murder case — Mohammed Kadus, Mohammed Rehman, and Raman — have been remanded in judicial custody till August 13 by a local court. Another accused, Bhooto Yadav, is already in judicial custody. The three were produced in a local court as their police remand ended today. Earlier, on July 27, they were remanded in the custody of Ludhiana police till August 2. The same day, Bhooto was sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

The Ludhiana police are investigating the murders of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV) College, Jalandhar, staffers including the principal, Rita Bawa. An investigating team member told Newsline on the condition of anonymity: 'A police team had taken Kadus, Rehman and Raman to Bihar to trace the other accused who are absconding. Local police also aided the search. But nothing came out of it.' Those evading arrest are Ramu, Manoj Yadav, and the mastermind of these murders, Sachin.

The photographs of those absconding have been circulated in all their suspected hideouts in Bihar and elsewhere. 'Our efforts are still on. We will send more search parties, and we hope to arrest them soon,' the officer added.

The principal of Kanya Maha Vidyalya (KMV) College, Rita Bawa, cook Kishore Mandal and two watchmen, Shamsudeen and Tarsem Lal, were brutally murdered in the college premises on the intervening night of January 5 and 6 this year.

With the Jalandhar police's failure to solve the case for long, the case was handed over to the Ludhiana police by the Director General of Police, Punjab, in July.
